This is Post #8,834 in Braves Journal history, at least that is what WordPress is telling me. That’s probably wrong, because I think a fair number of Mac’s earliest posts aren’t counted there, but we go with the history we’ve got, not necessarily the truth. Now as milestones go, 8,834 is sort of obscure, unless you count in base-631, which is more fingers than even Antonio Alfonseca has.
For those of us committed to the more prosaic base-10, however, we are very close to another WordPress-notified milestone: 600,000 comments. The odometer is going to turn over for the 6th time pretty dang soon. To everyone who has contributed to that we here at Braves Journal thank you.
So I did some data analysis, cos that’s what I do. I want to start by saying that the stats here look pretty accurate, but undoubtedly have errors: many, many commenters have used more than one screen name, either on purpose or through typos, and quite a few have used more than one email address. So I’ve aggregated by name and email address to try and isolate people, but that’s an inherently fraught enterprise. Nonetheless, the results look pretty plausible to me.
There are only two commenters who have made more comments than Mac’s 21,533. AAR at 24,334 and csg at 22,393. Good on both of you, as Peter Moylan would say. Rounding out the top 10 are Messrs. Copenhaver (19,312), braves14 (17,145), smitty (17,019), ububba (16,354), stu (15,285), Ryan C (13,032), and Sam Hutcheson (12,858). Together, these 10 have contributed just about 30 percent of the comments here. I am not known for my reticence, but I have contributed a modest 4,595, good for 34th place, though that of course ignores my 340 posts which are much longer in verbiage, if not necessarily more insightful. I don’t have residence data, but I’m pretty sure that timo (5,323) leads the international contingent, well ahead of stephen in the uae’s 2,000.
Looking over the list creates a lot of nostalgia, both good and bad. We all still miss Bethany and her 8,476 comments, and I’m a little sad about the way blazon and his 5,577 have left. No one, I trust, misses the 389 posts from iloveemmastone.
The Internet is characterized by long tails. There are just over 1,000 commenters (roughly half the total) who made but one post, and they are (from visitor counts alone, as well as comments to me personally from people I went to high school with) swamped by those whose lurking is so dedicated that they have made no comments at all. I love all of you as well.
And these counts should not be construed to give short shrift to the latecomers who make the bulk of comments today and simply started too late to make the overall lists. In the last two years, for example, stampton has generated just over 10 percent of all comments, with putter, our new insect overlords, tfloyd, roger and rusty s. not far behind, among those not previously mentioned.
Anyway, as we near 600,000, we can take pride in the fact that we have created a community, and it’s now time for pitchers and catchers to report so I don’t have to write posts like this one. When will we hit the magic number? Well, it all depends on you guys.

Wow, what a trip down memory lane. Thanks Jonathan.
What happened to csg and braves14? I can hazard a guess for Sam Hutcheson.
I think that the discourse in the comments of this website is the single best thing about the internet. You’ve got a couple of smart cookies on Twitter, but it’s drowned out, unfortunately, by too many dunces.
I’m very thankful this place is still around. Thank you Mac, Alex, Ryan, and Jonathan for running the show and everybody who contributes and comments.
And thank you, Rob, for also manning the helm.
Thanks Remy.
I don’t post very often but I echo wholeheartedly what Rob said!
Man 10% of posts in the last 2 years. Two ways to look at it. One, I’m doing yeoman’s work of keeping the board active. Two, I can’t shut my fat gob 😂
Respect to the old guard with those gaudy counting stats.
All good, my man.
In other news, AAR is under investigation for the use of Comment-Enhancing Drugs.
Even when we disagree, Stampton, and even when I’m put on blast for making fun of casuals, I really appreciate what you have to say.
Hey thanks Rob. That means a lot.
I went to high school in Japan and graduated in 2001. I remember going to the computer lab during class breaks and reading the game recaps Mac would post. I needed those because I couldn’t watch the games on the base we lived on. I remember having a post graduate job over the summer in 2005 that sat me at a computer all day long and that was probably the only time I would have considered myself a commenter on this site, but I have definitely come to this site nearly everyday for over 25 years. Thanks to everyone for keeping this site going.
Whoa… 16,000+ posts… That sounds impossible, but I’ll have to trust the science.
As I say often about my Braves fandom: Hey, I could have worse habits.
Thnx to all for feeding this one.
I miss Bill Edwards
Perhaps the highest ratio of memorability to quantity of any poster. A total of 38 posts. For those who don’t remember, here’s a sample @ 9:51 PM:
The inimitable Bill Edwards… as Neil Young once sang: “Just think of me as one you never figured…”
I’ve been a Braves fan since I could only listen to them on CBS radio (Braves radio) in the deep South (at least since 1969) and only found this site during the rebuild. Been here ever since. I want the Braves back on TBS. I guess mlb.com will have to do.
Rob, I’m still here. I don’t comment as much in the offseason though. I usually comment as “B14” instead of braves14 these days since I get tired of typing it out every time.
Coppy is now writing for Baseball America.
Do you subscribe? I havent in a long time but was thinking of trying it out again.
No, but his first article was free.
I miss the original Alex R and Smitty. Wonder what his barber’s talking about these days.
My personal BravesJournal started in maybe 2004 or 2005, and eventually took me away from the blog and Twitterward. I deleted my Twitter account when that place went from run-of-the-mill toxic to a god forsaken superfund site. Been trying BlueSky for a year or so but there isn’t much traffic there. Thought I’d poke my head in here and see how things are going, and I’m looking forward to spending more than a few evenings back here with y’all when the season starts.
We’ve just been waiting for your return, If there’s any single characteristic of a true Braves fan, it’s patience.
I miss spike.
Long-time lurker, posted much more often on a.s.b.a-b back in the day when I had less daytime responsibilities. Miss the days when you could watch over 100 Braves games per season on cable without an additional charge.
I’ve been around with some of you guys for years. Back in the early 2003-2004 period, I even had a column with the old BravesBeat. It seems like that may have evolved from an old Yahoo group. A lot of those early days seemed to involve as many arguments between Michael Rappaport (not the actor) and the admins. It was a lively group that even included a young perv who I believe is still doing time for soliciting minors.
Congrats to all involved, and thanks for continuing to include me. I’m a ’57 model, myself. I saw my first MLB games at Forbes Field, in Pittsburgh, 1965. Pirates swept the Cubs in a twinbill! I started with the Braves when they moved south. It’s been a crazy ride.

Between Arraez now getting to hit bloops half the time in the cavernous outfield of San Francisco and Suarez getting to hit in a bandbox, I think these FAs have found the right stadiums for their talents.
Has Braves Journal had a recent hack by which our passwords to enter might have been compromised? I got from “Jetpack” an e-mail that says that, but which reeks of “phish.”
Also, lots of thanks to all who help make this thing go. A most erudite and intriguing cast of characters.
Interesting, cliff. Has anyone else been so notified? I recently downloaded the entire website to do the comment analysis above, and I got everyone’s self-announced email address, though a lot of them are dummy addresses. But I haven’t used them for anything, and never will, other to try and contact someone on urgent Braves Journal business. And I don’t have access to anyone’s passwords, if you actually registered your name with WordPress on the site, which most people have not… I think we only have around 100 registered users.
But as far as I know, there has been no leak.
Fun read, JonathanF. I can’t remember the exact year I discovered Braves Journal but it was my no. 1 source of really understanding the game beyond BA, HRs and RBIs. I appreciate this site so much, you have no idea.
9 days until pitchers and catchers report. This felt like the longest offseason. Cannot wait! Go Braves!
Not sure I remember when I first started visiting, but seeing Mac’s Mike Hampton videos, or reading the glossary, were always highlights. Cheers!
Braves expected to launch their own TV network…

Wow, wonder if this will involve a change in the broadcasters? Who actually employs them, anyway? Will they try to bring Chip back? (I think I’m in what’s called a doom loop here.)
The broadcasters will be the same if the Braves want them to be. I can’t remember if, under the old system, they were technically paid by the network or by the Braves, but they were definitely selected by the Braves. They’ll just move them over (again, unless they were going to make a change in the first place).
MLB’s top 10 catchers – 4 current of former Braves catchers on that list with 3 developed in ATL.

I wasn’t expecting Murphy to be on that list and certainly not ahead of Langeliers. But it goes to show you that a healthy year of Murphy would go along way towards people’s perceptions of him.
Carlos Beltrán is going into the Hall of Fame with a Mets cap:
Kansas City Royals – 7 years, 24.8 bWAR, ROY
New York Mets – 7 years, 31.1 bWAR, 6 All-Star games, 3 Gold Gloves
I certainly get why he’d be going in as a Met, but I’d be a little disappointed if I was the Royals. They drafted him, developed him, and he spent an equal amount of time there.
I miss, myself.
We all do, Chief. You’re welcome anytime.
I should also note that since ahem, most of us are from the South, and some from Alabama, I just finished my debut novel, The Weight of the Light, and I’m now in the waiting game of the snobbish world of publishing…
If anyone would like to read it, it’s a Southern Gothic/family saga novel about my cotton farming family… shoot me an email and I’d be much obliged for some eyes on target…
If some of you had “Chief Nocahoma may well be a published author” on your bingo card, maybe it’s a good day to buy a lottery ticket…
Go Braves and love to you all.
