Atlanta looks to end a three game skid this evening in Pittsburgh. It will be Braves, Bucs – Game 2 at 7:10 ET/6:10 CT
Yonny Chirinos (5-4, 4.42) will take on Mitch Keller (9-8, 4.35) in game 2 of this four-game set. In our fearless leader’s series preview yesterday, Ryan Cothran indicated the Braves had a rather large advantage in games 1, 3, & 4. You may read that here: https://bravesjournal.com/2023/08/07/braves-vs-pirates-series-preview/. Given the results of Game 1, let’s hope Braves, Bucs – Game 2 goes better for the good guys.
Chirinos looks to shore up his spot as the Braves’ innings-eating #5 starter tonight. His first start for the Braves was inauspicious, but his last outing was a little more promising. The veteran right-hander threw five innings of three run ball, beating the Los Angeles Ohtani’s. The Braves don’t need Chirinos to dominate, they just need him to not give up five or six ones in one inning tonight.
Mitch Elder or Mitch Keller?
Keller was an All-Star for the Pirates just a few weeks ago, but similar to Bryce Elder, Keller has struggled significantly in his last seven starts. The Cedar Rapids, IA native is 1-5 with a 6.58 ERA in his past seven outings. In fact, he has given up nine, six, and nine runs to the Ohtani’s, Filthies, and Brewers in his last three starts.
Let’s hope Matt Olson plates a run in his 100th straight game tonight. I mean, let’s hope Matt drives in his 100th run tonight. If he does, it will be his 11th straight game with an RBI. Dude has been amazing! Go get ’em boys!
Cheers to Money Mike and Austin Riley keeping up their good work, as well!
Not gonna lie, I’ve always had a soft spot for Yonny.
7:05/6:05. My bad…
“Crapshoot” is gonna be this year’s coping mechanism…
“Crapshoot” is going to be this season’s copium. This team has nowhere near enough pitching.
Makes game’s completely not fun to watch throwing out a re-tread like Chirinos. At least the young guys might develop. This dude is washed
A dumpster dive for a starter in-season wasn’t the answer, shocking
My word! Four HRs for the Bucs in five innings?
Brian Snitker- founding member of the Yonny Chirinos Fan Club apparently. Wasting starts with this guy is like the human white flag
If only we would have had a chance to add a legit starting pitcher a week ago.
The continued insistence on throwing Yonny Chirinos instead of somebody who could tell us something going forward still baffles me. Not only is he not the best option even in a vacuum, he also prevents you from getting answers on Soroka or any of the younguns…so even if he was the best option in a vacuum, you could very easily argue it’s still not worth it to pitch him. But again, he’s not. So what are we even doing here?
It’s absolutely ridiculous. We are about to have our 12 game lead from last Friday cut to 8 games and we tie ourselves to Chirinos.
Good question, Nick
If Yonny keeps having starts like this I’m confident he will be discarded again.
I know some of the guys are hurt but none of Soroka, Smith-Shawver, Dodd, Schuster or a bullpen game are worse than this guy.
A bullpen game is worse than this guy, but none of the others are.
Starting pitching may be a little suspect for now, but you gotta love this offense!
Truth, tfloyd. Man, oh, man! How unbelievable has Arcia been? Feels good to win again!
Would have been nice to trade for an actual closer-type of pitcher at the deadline. This high-wire act has its limitations.
Stole that one.
Yonny Chirinos was in midseason form!
Recap will be tomorrow morning.
Bad news is that Yonny Chirinos is not the answer. Good news is that no one in their right mind, including the front office, expected him to be. I think Soroka will get 1 or 2 more starts in AAA and come back to the team for good before the end of the month. It also sounds like Kyle Wright is about 1 month away.
I haven’t felt the way I feel about Yonny since Josh Tomlin…Yonny is exactly my kind of player lol
