39 year-old Charlie Morton, who’s arguably been the Braves best starting pitcher in 2023, will face off against Ryne Nelson, aged 25, in the 2nd game of this Braves vs. Diamondbacks series. Nelson is a 4 pitch SP, throwing the FB over 50% of the time, the slider is the runner up at about 25%, and change and curve round out his arsenal. Thus far, none of the 4 pitches have been plus according to Fangraphs.
Transaction a Day AA
This is a loaded transaction. Danny Young gets the heave-ho even though he pitched really well when in the bigs. Sam Hilliard goes to the IL after coming up gimpy yesterday. Lastly, Seth Elledge gets the call with the Braves and boy oh boy, what a crazy journey 2023 has been for Elledge. Meanwhile, Eddie Rosario is back after a small injury and Forrest Wall will only see the grass when he’s shagging Eddie’s balls pre-game. I apologize in advance for that visual.
Seth Elledge’s 2023 Baseball Journey
- Didn’t make #Braves OD roster
- Stayed on 40-man
- Sent to AAA Gwinnett
- DFA’d by Braves
- Claimed by Mets
- Removed from Mets 40-man

- DFA’d by DET
- Outrighted to AAA
- Released by DET
- MILB deal w/ ATL

- Promoted to MLB
Braves vs. Diamondbacks Lineups
Austin Riley showed up last night and looked ready to destroy things. When Austin gets hot, he stays hot for really long stretches.
- In 2021, Riley went on a 61 game, 1.028 OPS tear
- In 2022, Riley went on a 61 game, 1.101 OPS tear
Let’s hope that this is the beginning of one of those tears.
Braves vs. Diamondbacks, Game 2! Time for another streak.
ICYMI, here’s our latest Rome Braves Players of the Month
For some reason, I was blacked out last night.
Was the Braves defense as lousy as it sounded?
Yes
I didn’t realize Elledge had bounced around so much this season. I remembered seeing him during Spring Training, but I don’t follow the minors closely, so I just assumed he’d been in Gwinnett this whole time.
Let’s hope Charlie Morton can help us get back on the right track tonight. He seemed to be a little less reliant on the curveball in his last outing against CHW, mixing in a lot more four-seamers and cutters to even out the mix (38 curves, 26 four-seamers, and 10 cutters, to be exact). That curveball is a fantastic pitch when he’s able to command it, but it’s probably more effective when utilized a little more judiciously.
Ron Gant is 58 and he looks about 40. Man.
No one on this team can pitch all of a sudden. This team’s post-ASG form is starting to look like August 1982 all of a sudden.
I remember August 1982 and still have nightmares. I suffered through every game of that 2-19 stretch. This is just a normal lull. Check back in a couple of weeks.
Not sure hanging an 0-2 curve was the answer Charlie. Our pitch execution with 2 strikes leaves a lot to be desired
If I was in the Atlanta front office, I would invest serious money in spots medicine and injury prevention. I know football injuries are much different, but investments in college football in that area seem to pay off. I haven’t heard of many baseball teams that are leading the way in injury prevention, but I think it should be considered.
This lull is to be expected.
Go get it, Austin.
We just seem to ride arms a batter or two too long. Again, another 2 strike hit. This lull may have been expected but we need better arms
What is with all the first-pitch swings tonight? Zero patience.
Yeah: we didn’t make Nelson work very hard. Hope for better ABs and results tomorrow.
Yeesh.
I’ve picked a good time to be out of the country. This team is poopy pants right now.
