Now THAT was a getaway day. The Braves got six hits and one walk, kicked the ball all over the field, and obligingly rolled over to let the Nationals complete the home sweep. I didn’t watch it and it really doesn’t deserve a recap, but here goes.
Matt Wisler wasn’t much good —€” in four innings, he gave up four extra base hits, five singles, six runs, and got no strikeouts — but his defense really let him down. Errors by Nick Markakis and Kelly Johnson contributed to the Nationals’ first three runs, and a botched double play ball contributed to their fifth and sixth. (That wasn’t actually called an error, because it was a double play ball and they got their man at second, and anyway I’m not sure who I’d blame more: Ciriaco for the poor short-hop to first, or Terdoslavich for the inability to pick a ball that Freeman would have caught in his sleep.)
Anyway, it wasn’t close. We’ve gotten away from the habit of posting songs in threads, but I need something to wash that out of my mouth.
Thanks for the song!
I guess it was bound to happen, but Neck’s errorless streak ended at 398 games. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/13149297/nick-markakis-record-streak-398-games-error-ends
Thanks, AAR.
So far this season, each time we’ve had a mini funk, we’ve resigned ourselves to a losing season and started talking about trading off vets. And each time, the Braves have bounced back with a mini streak to get back to .500 and within a couple games of the division lead.
I suspect without Freeman, we’re going to have a hard time bouncing back this time, but who knows with this team. I just hope we have a clear decision by the deadline so the players don’t feel sold out. We should be 8 games back of the 2nd wild card by then, which should be pretty convincing.
Wisler a bust.
The biggest power threat in our lineup: KJ or Terdoslavich?
Probably Maybin.
There’s some quality of mound presence that I see when Miller or Teheran or Foltynewicz pitches that I didn’t see with Wisler yesterday. Of course, I don’t see it with Wood either, so it’s not necessarily a key to good results. It’s just a vague quality that makes me want to depend on a guy. Can’t explain it.
Here’s something to take your minds off it…

First rule of Jon Lester Fight Club is…
Wisler has a certain, I dunno, Brad Woodall to him.
Ryne Sandberg just resigned. That’s a tough situation for him. I’m not sure how good or bad a manager he is, but I don’t think Joe McCarthy could have won with that team.
FWIW, the Mets are going to a 6-man rotation.
GM Sandy Alderson says it’s to accommodate the promotion of lefty phenom Steven Matz, who will start this weekend, but also to tailor innings limits for the rest of the rotation.
Do the Phils want Fredi?
What position will Mallex Smith play in AAA?
Well we’ve been watching through discomfort, so it evens out.
David O’Brien @DOBrienAJC 1h1 hour ago
#Braves lineup: Peterson 4, E. Perez 8, Markakis 9, C. Johnson 3, Uribe 5, Simmons 6, Gomes 7, Lavarnway 2, W. Perez 1
Fredi stacking right-handers against Liriano.
@12: I’m not sure he would have taken the job. The Phillies are a bunch of commies.
Why no Maybin?
Probably just a day off. For whatever it’s worth, Maybin is 0-5 with five strikeouts career against Liriano.
@19, no political talk. Braves Journal has a significant minority of communist party readership.
That was a Top 10 SC play by Simmons and a not top 10 SC play by Polanco.
This is all shaping up for a heartbreaking loss.
How do we get Harrison?
Scherzer’s at it again, perfect thru 5 in Phiily.
Damn Bills. They have been after you all night.
Just what we need.
I do not like leaving him in. Frediot.
well at least you got your money’s worth buddy.
Took him 2 extra batters to decide to take him out. That was a no-brainer to take him out. But Fredi is a No-Brainer.
Welp, there it is.
Way to go, Fredi.
What a stupid inning
This could and should have been avoided. I am sure Mr. Gonzalez is a nice man, but I would like for him to work elsewhere tomorrow.
I think he’s a good manager. I base that on my emotions.
Regression is now hurting.
Uribe!
At least Bills escapes Frediot’s fredicoy.
There is no way we win this game.
Lavarnway is the best defensive catcher we’ve seen in a Braves uniform this year. Good throw, bad result.
Whew.
Since Markakis has snapped his errorless streak, maybe he can snap his homerless streak.
Freddie would have had it
Lolololol
I assume the error was charged to KJ, right? I lost the feed for a minute.
Yes. Also congrats USWNT.
I’m sort of baffled that the Pirates didn’t win that in the ninth.
Of course that would happen.
@25 How do we get McCutchen?
I’m not sure anybody turns on a pitch as quick as he does. Freeman, Stanton, or anybody else.
I’m starting to see why the Nationals and Yankees didn’t feel Eury Perez is a major leaguer. At least Cunningham hasn’t been released by two teams.
Le sigh
Eury Perez is a hacker up there. He showed better plate discipline at Gwinnett than he had in the past, but he’s returned to his old habits at this level.
Booo
Well…
Peter Moylan got the win for Gwinnett tonight, David Carpenter the save
Gwinnett went Mallex Smith, Jose Peraza, EYJ in the top 3 of the batting order. Sooooooo many vrooms
Markakis is afraid to get anywhere near a wall.
This was a win that was managed into a loss. Frediocy.
Can’t exactly say Fredi lost that one, because Grilli would have pitched the ninth if the lead had been 2-0 and he was tossing meatballs up there. But the decision didn’t help.
6 games out of the 2nd WC
At least this is making the inevitable decision to sell easier.
So first it’s the bullpen, and now it’s the offense. It’s really hard to win when the team has trouble scoring more than two runs a game (it’s been a week now).
We don’t have anything to sell.
Gomes could fetch a batting cage and three resin bags. That’s the going rate for grit, leadership, bad defense and a .600 OPS.
I love “grit” when it’s the Cody Ross from ages 25 through 31, and I’m even ok with Cody Ross at age 32 when he’s .278/.331/.413 in part-time duty, but “grit” is nullified when he’s hitting like BJ Upton. The only thing that’s worse than that is… BJ Upton.
Question for the smart guys: is there a stat site (or software?) where you can highlight specific years of a player’s career and average the numbers? For instance, from my previous post, if I wanted to get Ross’ average triple slash from 25-31. Or what if I wanted to go Reggie Sander’s odd and even years by the traditional method of holding control and clicking miscellaneous entries on a stat line. Is there anything like that? With more and more websites going for a fully interactive interface, does that exist in the baseball stat world?
Please and thanks.
Pretty sure you can do that on BR.
62 — Selling items: Maybin, KJ, Grilli, J. Johnson, Pierzynski, Uribe.
Recapped.
