Atlanta Braves vs. Miami Marlins — Box Score — June 5, 2012 — ESPN
Didn’t see much of the game, but I know that Huddy pitched a complete-game shutout, Andrelton showed out with the bat, and Uggla hit a long homer off of that monstrosity in center. So, go Braves!
Mac is stuck in Philly without internet; he’ll be back tomorrow morning.

Wasn’t Uggla’s second homer the 200th of his career? I think I saw that his first HR was #199. Seems worth mentioning.
Yes, the second one was his 200th.
So I had this long post concerning trading Hanson to the D’backs this offseason for Upton because it looks like Upton is burning bridges in Arizona. Then I looked at Arizona’s farm system. Holy schmokes! They won’t be paying or trading for pitching anytime soon.
All around, our best game of the season. Simmons looks terrific in the field, what a difference!
Thanks for the update and recap, Stu.
All prayers and wishes, Mac.
Couldn’t help but laugh at this comment by Ozzie Guillen on Uggla. This is the type of insightful analysis that only a manager can give! (-;
“Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said, “This kid is very powerful. I’m not surprised he hit two home runs in a game. He did it before, I guess.””
Time for Homer Trivia!
1. According to UZR and +/-, guess who is the best defensive LF in the National League?
2. According to WAR, guess who is the best LF in the NL?
3. According to UZR, who is the best defensive RF in the game?
4. According to UZR and +/-, who is the best defensive CF in the game?
5. According to WAR, who is the best CF in the NL?
6. According to WAR, who is the most valuable 2b in the NL?
7. According to +/-, who has saved 1 run per game for his first 3 games of the season?
8. According to fangraph’s value, guess who has already been worth 1.1 million in 3 games?
9. According to WAR, who could be the Braves most valuable player by season’s end?
10. According to UZR, which NL first baseman’s defense has been scrutinized by scouts since day 1 but, according to UZR and +/-, has been slightly above average this year?
11. According to UZR and +/-, which NL second baseman’s defense is slightly above average this year?
Defensively, if our outfield and SS is way above average, our 1b and 2b is slightly above average, our 3b is at least average (unless Francisco is playing there), I’d say we have an above average defensive team. Finally…
@7 It’s amazing what swapping out a few players does for our defense.
The grounder up the middle in the fourth inning was a prime example of a ball the Rev would not have been within camera range of. Our pitchers are about to see their numbers improve significantly, only it won’t be “regression”. It will be “defense”.
First prize-a week in Philadelphia
Second-two weeks
Trying hard to temper my enthusiasm/expectations of Andrelton.
I’m not expecting him to hit, but he’ll make up for it in the field.
I think that as long as we see Simmons as a #7/#8 hitter, and don’t expect any more, we may be pleasantly surprised — though it’s just as likely that he’ll hit .250/.300/.350.
Andrelton Simmons has gone three games without a walk. It took Jeff Francoeur until career game #34. How close to Frenchy’s record will he come?
When pitchers adjust, your expectations will likely be tempered for you.
Hang tough, Mac. Be well and hurry back.
Statistical oddities Theatre
The Braves had two players end the game last night with their BA and OBP exactly the same (Simmons and Constanza) and one (Hudson) who’s OBP was less than his BA.
I used to know how that was possible, but have forgotten. (Sac Flies lower OBP but not BA?)
Oh yeah, Go Mac!
@16 Correct. Sac flies don’t count as at-bats, but are used in OBP.
Same goes for sac bunts. That’s why it’s not too uncommon for pitchers to have higher BAs than OBPs.
Actually, generally, sacrifice bunts are not included in OBP. The usual formula is: OBP = (H + BB + HBP) / (AB + BB + HBP + SF)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On-base_percentage
By the way, the Reds drafted Frank Wren’s son in the 30th round.
The Braves didn’t even take him!
Frank Wren is a cold-hearted bastard.
That is awesome.
Well he’s only a Sophomore. It’s not like there’s any chance he’s gonna leave, no matter who drafted him.
Has Jonathan Schuerholz been promoted to Asst. GM yet?
@20 Which makes sense, because the entire idea of a sacrifice bunt is that you’re giving up attempting to get on base to move another runner over.
My bad on sac bunts. I don’t fully understand why sac flys should go against OBP and sac bunts should not. It seems to me that a sac fly can be every bit as intentional as a sac bunt. It is also possible for a sac bunt to result in a base hit. I know that smart baseball people have looked at it a lot more closely than I have though.
@27
I agree. Either both should count or neither should count. I’m leaning towards both.
Because people don’t try to get sac flies, they try to get hits. Yes, they do try to make sure that, should they not get a hit, the err on the side of hitting the ball in the air, but they still want to get hits first. They are different in my opinion, and it makes sense to me why they are counted different.
@21
Schuerholz must still be running things
@21 Wren may have known he would not sign? Ripken’s son was drafted by O’s 30th round. Even Bethany may prefer he go to SC than hell hole of Baltmor’
If Prado makes All Star team will it be LF or 3B?
Prado isnt in the top 15 in OF voting. Thats just wrong.
Who coaches NL All Stars this year?
TLR
Martin Prado is destined to always be appreciated 20% less than he deserves.
Is La Russa going to do it?
“By the way, the Reds drafted Frank Wren’s son in the 30th round.”
Surely the Braves could have used an 8th round pick on the GM’s son.
@31 No one should have to go to Baltimore.
@38
I see what he was holding on to Tehran and Minor for.
#39
Going there tomorrow night.
And yes, I have to go.
Let’s hope the Braves can score a few early runs for Delgado tonight.
@41 My condolences, ububba.
Not a great start, but that’s why McCann’s hitting third, I guess.
Nice inning, Randall. Now let’s score those runs.
For what it’s worth, both McCann and Uggla hit the ball hard. Uggla hit it harder, but right at the center fielder.
Johnson’s struck out a few, Andrelton. Get him next time.
Marlin announcers just said Delgado was blowing gas. Is that fair?
Love the camera positioning in center at this new Marlins stadium. Not quite as good as Turner Field, but you can really see where the pitches cross the plate.
Delgada has this weird whipping delivery, I feel like the ball just flies out around him as he’s delivering.
Johnson murders us. In 16 games against the Braves, he’s 5-3 with a 2.29 ERA and 104 strikeouts against just 38 walks in 94 1/3 innings. He has never given up more than three earned runs against us.

Who is the doofus in the booth with Joe and Chip?
That’s more like it Brian.
Chip
Freddie!!!!!!!!!!!
According to Craig Calcaterra, it’s Michael Milken.
And whoo, Freddie!
Freddie does it again! Please don’t be hurt!
They are calling obstruction? Boo. How can they send the runner back?
Terrible call.
This is insane — because they threw the ball into Freddie’s arm, they give the Marlins an automatic double play and send our runner back to third.
Bobby Cox would have had a stroke
Although, to be fair, this would not have happened if Heyward hadn’t hit another freaking double-play grounder to second.
Come on Delgado!!!
Randall!!!1!!!1!1!!
HA!!! Justice!
Ball don’t lie!
What’s the record for ground outs to second by a player in a single season? Does 2011 Heyward hold the record?
Nice.
Fredi should have gone nuts on that call.
Delgado went up to 95 on that fastball, and he’s hit that a few other times today, too. That’s faster than I’ve seen him all year.
Randall’s grooving.
Does Randall hit better that George Contanza?
@Bethany – You’re in Baltimore? I’m very sorry. Camden Yards is a gem though!
(Howard County denizen – although I’m still in a Congressional district with the center of Baltimore…)
McCann hits another line drive single to the opposite field.
Up yours, Ted Williams shift!
Brian’s raking.
Bethany was in movie “Escape from Baltmor'”
@73 Was in Baltimore, ran away to Boston.
You can do it, Delgado!
Baaaah.
Martin Prado, love ya, buddy.
Great play Martin!
@77: Wait, so wherever you are, the local team finishes last? How do you feel about Philly?
Okay offense, lets get that one back…
Love the Prado
Speaking of Ballmer, love the “The Wire-The Musical” that is making the rounds. It’s at funnyordie.com.
/Omar comin’ (not Infante)
Yeah, it’s pretty spectacular, especially since it has so many of the real actors from the show.

@81 Hey, Auburn won a title my graduating year, so I have some measure of luck in me.
70 — Delgado hit 96 a couple of times earlier.
You know… if this is the real Randall Delgado, folks, then we don’t need to worry about Teheran quite so much.
Delgado always felt like he was the real deal to me, much more so than Teheran. Granted, this is just me an my gut, which are usually wrong. But between watching the two I always had more faith in Delgado.
I’m hella surprised by tonight though.
And now he’s hitting 96 pretty consistently.
What a wonderful inning for the kid. Let’s get some runs and give Randall the rest of the night off.
Turning point game for Delgado?
90 — He only has 69 pitches thrown and the Marlins can’t hit him. I say leave him in.
Delgado has been more ready than Teheran, but I think Teheran will catch up and possibly pass him.
@93 1 and 1A?
Nice game, kid. Hold ’em, pen.
Hasn’t Teheran had a handfull of impressive starts at AAA in recent weeks?
Sounds like a plan, PaulV.
Delgado’s 2012 ERA+ is 86. He has had flashes before too; it wasn’t that long ago that people here were wanting him, instead of Minor, to get sent down whenever. He has thrown a good game, but it’s one start.
Whew.
Jonny scared me but escaped. A few runs wouldn’t hurt.
Venters’ first clean appearance in a while.
@96 I believe Teheran is specifically working on his curve right now. It makes his in-game offerings a little predictable, but if he can improve that pitch, he might be an ace.
@102
I have been thinking the same thing. He really needs one more pitch
Marlins announcers just said a stat:
Braves w/Chipper in the starting lineup: 19-5
Braves w/o Chipper starting: 11-20
Daaaannnngggggg.
Jason, for the love of baseball, do something.
He is doing something, Bethany! Striking out is hard work!
He made a great catch a moment ago.
Are you watching Treme, Alex?
Nice, Eric. A little insurance, please.
Jose Reyes looked legitimately scared during that AB.
Love that Kimbrel strut.
Dammit Chip, never say an opponents hitting streak is over before the last out.
Geez. Can we get a radar gun on that Simmons throw to first?
112 – I thought the same thing. Total jinx.
Kimbrel is all over the place
Kimbrel <3
Wooo! The total opposite of yesterday’s win.
Ball game!
I love winning. Go, Braves; woo-hoo!
That was a clutch call by the ump on strike 2 to Ramirez. I did not think it was a strike.
Good win guys.
Delgardo gets to start another game, likely many more.
It shire looked inside, but that pitch at 98 is scary.
shire=sure
Fox Track said it caught the bottom inside corner. I thought it was a little low but have no complaints with the call.
I was surprised the ump gave Kimbrel that strike (even if it was in the zone) because McCann had to move the glove all the way across the plate to catch it.
But yes, 98 at the knees on the corner is filthy.
Seems like the good Braves are back. Hope we wouldn’t see another long losing streak this year!!!
May god please keep Chipper healthy for the remaining of this year? Let’s all pray for Chipper and Mac every night from now on.
THe best pitcher in the National League might be in out bullpen.
our bullpen
@128 I honestly think it’s hard to compare starting pitchers and relief pitchers because they have different duties. However, I think the best relief pitcher in the major League might be in our bullpen. Of course, some may argue that that person can be Chapman instead of Kimbrel.
I went to my first game at Marlins Park today. The AC is definitely nice though it just doesn’t compare to an outdoor stadium. Definitely feels more open and brighter than Arizona though and it was good to see so many Braves fans in enemy territory. We’re gonna try to go again tomorrow!
Pretty hard to argue against Chapman. He’s thrown the equivalent of three 2-hit, 16-K shutouts this year. But I like the idea of ranking best overall pitcher. Right now, I’d go with:
1. Verlander
2. Chapman
3. Kimbrel
Braves have reached agreements with their top 6 draft picks.
More good news!
Fun game to watch, too. Delgado was just filthy. I”m a bit surprised they pulled him when they did.
Also, I’m sad that I expected Fredi to go quietly after that awful interference call. I had no expectation that he’d blow a fuse and get tossed (like Bobby would’ve). Guess he made up for it with the hit-and-run that resulted in Delgado’s hit.
Way to go, fellas. Great pitching all the way around tonight. Call me old-school, but I dig a SS who can pick it. Make it a sweep.
And Baltimore’s not so bad, IMO, especially when the O’s are in town (this weekend vs. the Philthy Phils). Glen Burnie? That’s another story.
I-95, here I come—with plenty of Springsteen CDs… (“this turnpike sure is spooky at night when you’re all alone…”)
”Their pitcher was better than we were,” Guillen said. ”Sometimes you’ve got to tip your hat.”
FINALLY!!!!
Checking in from Budapest, where all the women are beautiful and all the men look like metrosexual hipsters. I can’t believe that’s the way their masculinity served to them, but maybe they do.
Anyway, ever since I left the country, the Braves are 3-0. Me likes. Nice to see R-Del dominating. I know that kid’s got it in him. Now let’s see Mike Minor restore some confidence in him tonight.
@ John R. Ah, Budapest… Good for you. Let me know when you’re heading to Prague. I can give you some pointers and also recommendation on where absolutely NOT to go…
#138: Just left Prague, Timo. Flew in there and stayed the night. Me and the dude sitting next to me on the plane over from JFK hit the town, so got to experience their woeful, citywide selection of gin and incredibly weak pours. Meanwhile, my new pal is a beer lover (I can’t stand the stuff) and was loving it. The beer flows freely and cheaply in Prague. I guess it was my good luck that I didn’t hit any places that seemed like I would have been warned about! 🙂
Giancarlo vs Minor. Do you think he can hit it into what remains of the Everglades?
The Thunder are fun to watch.
@140
I think he can bounce one off of an oil well
@142
Good, maybe then he’ll be out the rest of the season filing the environmental impact statement.
@143: I can’t quit laughing at that.
Do the Braves go after Youk if Freeman hits the DL?
Recapped. BTW, I’m in the best shape I’ve been since March.
