Braves 5, Blue Jays 1

Box Score
An absolute outburst of runs. One more and MRSA would need two hands to count them. The Jays struck first, against Mike Minor, with a double and a single in the first, but Minor held them from there, giving up only three more hits and an intentional walk.

The Braves tied it up in the bottom of the when Schafer walked, Heyward singled for first and third, and Chipper hit a sac fly. Heyward’s foolish caught-stealing to follow hurt when McCann and Freeman singled, followed by an Uggla groundout.

In the third, Chipper singled with one out and Brian McCann, the best catcher in baseball, put the Braves ahead with a homer. With two out, AAG doubled home Uggla (don’t worry, he reached on a fielder’s choice) to make it 4-1. Minor doubled in the fourth and came home on successive singles by Schafer and Heyward.

Minor left after seven. Eric O’Flaherty and Jonny Venters pitched in the non-save situation because that’s how Fredi rolls.

  1. Good outing from Minor, plus a relative offensive outburst & a winning IL record now—let’s go for the sweep.

  2. Ok, so Gartrell hit 2 more HRs tonight, is up to 15 on the year with an OPS right at .900. Can we please give this guy a look?

  3. We’re all pretty certain that Carlos Beltran wouldn’t hold up in CF, huh?

Because if he could, I think I’d take him.

  4. Jon Sciambi doing college baseball games on ESPN now, Braves stuck with Caray and Jordan.

  5. Uggla had a .359 OPS against lefties coming into today. I think Bonds’s OPS was higher in the ABs in which he made outs alone.

  6. Bumgarner was just taken out of the game after 10 batters faced, here is how he fared:

    1 – Single
    2 – Double
    3 – Single
    4 – Double
    5 – Single
    6 – Double
    7 – Single
    8 – Double
9 – Strikeout (pitcher from AL)
    10 – Double

Mercifully taken out of game – that is unreal.

  7. 4 — Why? He’s a 27 year old career minor leaguer who doesn’t walk. Basically Jeff Francoeur.

  8. Was Heyward stealing or was it a hit and run on a 3-1 pitch? The pitch was a foot outside and somehow called a strike. MRSA just sat there with a stupid look on his face.

  9. F, last time I checked STL was up 2-1 going to the 8th. Now, they give up a 9 spot. Thats great…

  10. I don’t know Stu… Is Uggla worse at hitting than MRSA is at managing?

He’s certainly bad, though, really bad.

  11. I think MRSA is worse. Uggla was a good hitter for a number of years. Somewhere inside of him, he knows how to hit, and he will probably one day do it again.

There is no hope for Fredi.

  12. I like what Chipper is saying…

“We’ve got a chance to sweep an American League team. We need to get it done.”

I am tired of listening to that winning series BS. If there is a chance to sweep, get it done because the truth is it’s impossible to win every series…let alone not to be swept.

  13. @24 It sucks to lose a series, but it’s critical not to be swept. I guess that’s one of the major reasons why this team is having the second best record in the league.

  14. Hey, are there any posters here with knowledge about current laptop technology?

I’ve been running a Macbook, 1.0 GB RAM at 667 MHz, 120 GB hard drive, with a 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo processor; I bought it used about 4 years ago from a rich buddy of mine. I know it was pretty sub-par for a laptop even at that time, but I bought it at a time when I didn’t really use a computer on a daily basis, and, quite frankly, didn’t care. It’s really getting on age and is starting to fall apart. I’m interested in purchasing something that’s going to be future-proof for the next 3 or 4 years, so that it can last me through medical school.

The best current laptop that I found was a 15-inch Macbook Pro, with a 2.2 GHz Intel i7 quad-core processor, 500 GB hard drive, and 4 GB (which I was going to upgrade to 8 GBs) of ram. The only reason that the laptop is the fastest currently is because the i7 quad-cores aren’t available (yet?) to windows-based manufacturers. I wanted to spring for this because it’s come with a 200 dollar discount and a 100 gift card to the store. Is it worth it? Should I wait for a windows-based laptop to come out with the same technology?

    Thanks!

  15. @27: A number of Windows-based laptops have the quad-core i7 processors in them: Dell, HP, Asus, Acer, Samsung — just to name a few. The i7-2630QM (2 GHz) is at the low-end and I’ve seen 2720QM (2.2GHz) and 2820QM (2.3 GHz) processors available. Essentially, anything listed as “second generation Core” or “Sandy Bridge” with the QM (not M) designator will be a quad-core laptop.

  16. “AAG doubled home Uggla (don’t worry, he reached on a fielder’s choice)”

I’m glad you’re here to help us endure Uggla, Mac.

  17. Gamecocks are just a good baseball team. Suprised if they don’t make it to the Finals.

Cal keeps proving me wrong. I think they’re all on Doc Ellis’s baseball acid. They look like the ’78 A’s.

  18. Perhaps Minor has overcome his Vandy background, Stu. Mike pitched a great game.

Now let’s hope the Braves can score five early runs for Beachy.

  19. I could not believe Fredi did not come out of the dugout last night on the Heyward caught stealing. Watching Bobby come trotting out at times like those was one of the great things about being a Braves fan. Fredi just sat there. I was shocked. I guess I shouldn’t have been.

Do you think players start to notice that kind of thing? It seems like I used to hear players praise Bobby for “sticking up for them”.

  20. @27 Don’t get a windows laptop, especially if you want it to last. Get the best Apple laptop in your price range, get applecare for it, and enjoy.

  21. I could not believe Fredi did not come out of the dugout last night on the Heyward caught stealing. Watching Bobby come trotting out at times like those was one of the great things about being a Braves fan. Fredi just sat there. I was shocked. I guess I shouldn’t have been.

Given that Fredi Gonzalez is not, in fact, Bobby Cox, no, you shouldn’t have been. “New manager doesn’t behave exactly like old manager” is not exactly stunning news.

  22. With Apple’s exploitative customer service practices, I have taken a solemn vow to deride them at every opportunity.

They won’t do any work on your notebook unless you pay them to do everything they want to do.

We had a wonky hinge that was causing the ribbon cable to screen to stretch and disconnect. You’d have to open and close and open and close the notebook to get the cable to reseat and the screen to work again.

Apple took our notebook, kept it for 3 days, and then said they couldn’t replace the hinge, or reattach the ribbon cable, unless we paid them to replace the CDR drive aswell (the drawer was stuck and it didn’t open. We didn’t use it anyway.)

They wanted $1100. No joke. $1100. Or they wouldn’t touch the hinge.

And no one else can touch it or your warranty is void. But, I guess that’s not such a big deal since our warranty doesn’t seem to actually cover anything.

I took it apart, reseated the cable, stuck a machine screw right through the case into the hinge, and voided the warranty. Then I bought an HP.

So my advice is, don’t set foot in an Apple store. Unless you’re some kind of extreme activist or something, and you’ve got, like, a pipe bomb or something. Then, ya know, that’s your decision.

  23. for those that wanted to obtain Chone Figgans over the off season: .193 .241 .258

@27 – Do you really need that much computer? Unlike #38 I have enjoyed the build quality of my aluminum MacBook, the software experience and the solid OS experience. But you can get a Windows laptop with much the same internals for a lot less money.

All the Fredi hate is hilarious. The team is in second place with the 2nd best record in the NL for God’s sake.

  24. They won’t do any work on your notebook unless you pay them to do everything they want to do.

Or unless you have Apple Care, which if you didn’t purchase is your own fault.

Apple’s customer care is some of the best in the world, even the most anti-Apple zealots will agree to that. I have had multiple devices either replaced or fixed quickly and competently. Apple Stores are abhorrent for many reasons, but I have nothing but great things to say about their customer care.

  25. “All the Fredi hate is hilarious. The team is in second place with the 2nd best record in the NL for God’s sake.”

    Totally Agree.

  26. 40—What about those of us who wanted to acquire him at last year’s deadline?

Given Mac’s and Martin’s recent struggles, I can’t believe we have people here who are pro-MRSA.

  27. @41 – “Or unless you have Apple Care, which if you didn’t purchase is your own fault.”

That sir, is foolish. They refused to replace a hinge unless I paid for repair to a CD drive I don’t care about.

If a mechanic refused to replace your serpentine belt unless you paid to get that worn out clutch replaced, you’d call the Better Business Bureau. But when Megaloconglomapple International holds customers hostage for simple repairs, it’s the customer’s fault because they didn’t pay $250 pre-ransom before the full-ransom came due.

That $250 I didn’t spend on Apple-Care paid about half the price of the HP I bought to replace the Mac.

Coincidentally, my HP was having heat issues. They replaced my cooling fan 18 months after purchase, for free.

  28. I don’t want to contribute to the off-topic madness, but it needs to be pointed out that “…unless you have Apple Care, which if you didn’t purchase is your own fault” is a ludicrous statement.

  29. I’m not quibbling about the cost of repairs. If I wanted my CD Drive repaired, and it cost $1100, and I didn’t buy Apple Care, then them’s-the-breaks.

The issue is the refusal to do repair without restoring the notebook to it’s factory condition.

They won’t do “partial repairs.” I’m not talking “Well, can’t you just replace the processor? Do I really have to buy a new heat-sink?” I’m talking “We can’t replace the hinge to your screen because your CD ROM is stuck. So your repair won’t be $89. It will be $1100.”

That’s not a warranty issue. That’s a customer service issue.

I wonder if I had Apple Care, and the repair had been free, if they’d have been so eager to give me a CD drive I wasn’t asking for?

  30. Just an observation, but The Marlins were in 2nd place in what seems like 2 weeks ago. They’ve imploded completely, and the Nats are really coming on strong.

  31. My out-on-a-limb prediction:

Julio Lugo, for the duration of his Braves Career, will be JUST LIKE Alex Gonzalez, except without the sterling defense, or the occasional bursts of power.

I know, I know. I’m daring. And bold.

  32. There is absolutely nothing wrong with my HP laptop. You can get the same quality from a PC at about half the price of a Mac, it just depends on what you get.

  33. I agree with 55. You could make a pretty convincing pro-Apple argument based on the relative pleasure of working with the Mac interface for many years, but Windows 7 closed the gap considerably. I’ve been running Adobe CS5 on a $500 Asus laptop for almost 2 years, and it’s been a pleasure. I even had Solidworks cranked up on it a couple of times.

  34. All the Fredi hate is hilarious. The team is in second place with the 2nd best record in the NL for God’s sake.

You don’t seem to understand. If Fredi hadn’t surgically removed Dan Uggla’s ability to hit and personally trapped Stefan Gartrell in a interdimensional vortex in Gwinnett, thus assuring he would not be allowed to hit 47 HRs for the Braves before the All Star Break the Braves would have been awarded the 2011 World Series title ALREADY.

AND they’d have been awarded 1997 retroactively, too.

    You’re clearly stupid.

  35. Without asking “what are you going to use it for” no one can make a reasonable answer to the question “what kind of laptop should I buy?” Are you going to be doing graphic or music editing work? If so, go Apple. If you’re looking for a home office/spreadsheet/web browser, no real reason to spend outside of the standard PC/laptop brackets.

  36. I read on Talking Chop that one of the pundits said, I believe it was Rosenthal, that the Braves were looking at Josh Willingham. Play him in left? Bench the 62 million dinar(5 bucks U.S.)man? Play Prado at second? Bovine Scatology! I wish I could get paid just to make shit up.

  37. Thanks for the Pastornicky link Stephen. Gotta’ love the following quote from the article:
“The son of scout Cliff Pastornicky, Tyler is (like many kids from baseball families) fundamentally sound and a “baseball rat” type who hustles, is adept at “little ball” (he’s a great bunter), and plays above his tools.”

Being a great bunter and adept at “little ball” could get him a September call-up! Sounds like Fredi’s dream player.

  38. Anyone noticed how ridiculously good McCann has been this year? His power was way down to start the season, but he’s back up over a .200 ISO now and he’s got his highest wOBA and wRC+ since his monstrous 2006. Best catcher in baseball? Best catcher in baseball.

  39. Being a great bunter and adept at “little ball” could get him a September call-up! Sounds like Fredi’s dream player.

Sometimes I get the feeling that folks around here haven’t quite grasped that it’s no longer 2002.

  40. I’ve had an HP for two years now and it’s been great with absolutely no problems. From what I’ve been told, unless you are really into graphic designing as well as movie making and other art programs (all things a Mac is great for) , it’s a better value to get a PC at about half the cost.

  41. Small sample size but don’t get a Dell laptop, dude. We’ve had two and they were both rendered useless after about 2 years.

Got an HP laptop and have had zero issues and have had it for 3+ years.

Also for those complaining about the strike zone last night check this out:

    http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/zoneTrack.php?month=6&day=21&year=2011&game=gid_2011_06_21_tormlb_atlmlb_1%2F&prevDate=621

Looks like 4 strikes called outside the zone against ATL hitters and 10 against TOR.

There were a couple of really bad calls against ATL but we can hardly complain.

  42. Man ALL the MOANING, BITCHING and WHINING about the bunting. So, you have the best pitching staff in baseball, no real impact hitter other than McCann, no team speed. You know if you can get 2 or 3 runs you have a good chance to win because if you can get to the 6th or seventh with that lead you have 3 stone cold killer relief pitchers waiting to finish ghe game. What the hell is wrong with exchanging an out to increase your chances to score a run? I guess I should say that I haven’t gotten a chance to watch many Brave’s games so I don’t always get the context but just asking.

  43. 61, aren’t those all euphemisms for “He sucks.”?

301/346/417 with solid defense as a 21 year old in AA “sucks?” I suppose Brett Butler sucked too.

  44. I’m not saying anything about him specifically. But usually when someone is referred to as “gritty” or a “hustler” or “great teammate” then they are talking about someone who sucks i.e. David Eckstein.

  45. #66
FWIW, I’ve had a basic dual-processor Dell laptop for 3 years now. I don’t use it for anything crazy—writing, editing, email—but I travel with it a lot & it’s been fine.

Of course, low investment, low expectation.

  46. I love my HP, and the Mac that I repaired is now just an accessory on my home stereo.

The only problem I’ve experienced with my HP is heat issues. In “Power Options” there’s a “Power Saver Mode,” which sounded good, I guess, so I used it. But one of the things this setting does is change how often the fan comes on.

This is a problem because the video card creates quite a bit of heat in there.

So I’d use the notebook, and be experiencing no problems. Until I watched a youtube video, or a Braves highlight. Then I’d begin overheating and experiencing RIDICULOUSLY poor performance.

I didn’t make any connection to the power setting, instead I thought it was the famous Firefox Memory Leak… Until the fan failed entirely. Called HP (FOR FREE, DIDN’T PAY $49 FOR THE CALL, APPLE!) they fixed it (FOR FREE) and told me that on my model that power save mode seemed to cause heat problems, they knew about the issue, and it’s in their first order of trouble-shooting (if I had called, which would have BEEN FREE.)

  47. Over/under on the attendance for a 1:00 Wednesday game in Atlanta vs. the Blue Jays?

  48. I’m not saying anything about him specifically. But usually when someone is referred to as “gritty” or a “hustler” or “great teammate” then they are talking about someone who sucks i.e. David Eckstein.

And they’re usually white, too. You rarely get those “gritty, hustle, gets the uniform dirty” puff pieces about non-white players. None of which is relevant to Pastornicky. The link above provides his slash stats. If he’s putting up those numbers by being all bunty-gritty-gamer-second-coming-of-Mark-Lemke it doesn’t matter at all. He’s putting up those numbers.

There’s a lot of noise around here complaining about small ball, bunting, low output offenses, yadda yadda yadda. With the obvious caveat that the Braves have had some serious offensive woes – compounded notably by the under performance of Dan Uggla and a rash of injuries to big name offensive players – it’s a bit overmuch. It seems like we haven’t quite come to grips with the fact that league wide offense has returned to the 1980s era, and that “sillyball” isn’t around much any more.

  49. @66 My 7 old Dell laptop is still chugging. It is the lowest of low end models with a Celeron processor. Runs Windows XP. Handed down to one of my daughters then to her little sister. Strange how folks can have different experiences with the same vendor.

  50. Pastornicky’s been great so far this year and I wasn’t really talking about him. I just really hate those feel good lines because they are so often about white players. It stereotypes white and non-white players and it’s also lazy journalism because it can be said about pretty much anyone.

  51. ONE OTHER WORD OF ADVICE:

Look into Costco if you’re going to buy any large electronic.

I had to buy a $50 one year membership, but I saved $120 on my notebook (and another $75 or so when I bought a TV.)

But the big thing is.. HP offered a 1 year Warranty free. Costco added a 2nd year free, and my understanding is that’s their policy on all large electronics.

  52. You rarely get those “gritty, hustle, gets the uniform dirty” puff pieces about non-white players.

Michael Bourn? Chone Figgins when he was good?

Let’s not bring race into discussions, please.

  53. Those girls who had the great personalities and made their own clothes can surprise you sometimes.

  54. @78, Agreed. Check Sam’s Club and/or BJ’s Wholesale as well. All three should have websites and you can usually get a great deal at at least one.

  55. I had forgotten that Ross caught Hudson some at Auburn. Need to pair those two more often.

  56. You probably don’t need the very latest processor in order to make it through med school. Just my guess.

I’ve found good value by buying used Mac computers that had a couple of years of applecare left on them.

At the mac store here in town, they’ve even replaced parts that were considered beyond their normal use. Their cost to repair issues on a computer w/o applecare were lower than I expected and it was convenient that I just had to go to the mall to get it done. So I’ve enjoyed good service and convenience from this particular store.

  57. “There’s a lot of noise around here complaining about small ball, bunting, low output offenses, yadda yadda yadda. No, there’s a lot of noise about people failing to bunt, about the Braves being terrible base runners, and about Fredi Gonzalez’s occasional over-management. There have also been some complaints that an offense expected by many to be one of the league’s best is, in fact, one of the league’s worst. Regardless of the downward trend in offensive numbers league-wide, the Braves are still 25th in OBP, 24th in wOBA, 22nd in wRC+, and 21st in runs. People don’t like underperforming; they complain about it. It happens.

As stereotypical as grousing may be on a blog–gasp!–your persistent grousing about the grousing is no less a stereotype.

  58. Good to see that Yunel remains extremely hatable. I need to see his antics at least once a year to be reminded why that trade wasn’t terrible.

  59. @91 – what was Yunel doing, exactly?

Also, despite his attitude, I am envious of the fact that the Jays are going to end up with 3 years of Yunel’s .780-ish OPS production for roughly $13M, with club options for two more years at $5M each.

The fact of the matter is, though, I can’t help but feel that Yunel would have never turned it around in Atlanta. It’s not that he lacks the talent, it’s just that he’s an immature, entitled twit and he stopped trying in Atlanta.

  60. Bourne/Figgins/Pierre were/are rarely written up as gritty gamers. More often they’re written up as speedsters getting by on their raw physical skills.

Who really thought the Braves 2011 would be one of the best offenses in the league? Good, yes? Best? Really?

  61. I did. The following lineup looked pretty stacked at the beginning of the season:

    Prado
    Heyward
    Jones
    McCann
    Uggla
    Freeman
    Gonzales
    McClouth

  62. Who’s not the best catcher in baseball? Yadier Molina, he of the career sub-.700 OPS. Vote for McCann for All Star.

  63. One of the leagues best offenses. When you’re talking 16 teams.. what, top 5 makes up one of the best?

On April 1 we expected to run out 145 games or so of:
    1- Prado
    2- Heyward
    3- Chipper
    4- McCann
    5- Uggla

Yeah. I’d guess that make for one of the best in the league.

You can be such a blow-hard, and about nothing. You blow hard for no reason. You just pick things to blow hard about, and they are so often dumb. Man.

  64. And how is the Braves’ failure to live up to “top five” offenses not about injuries and lost seasons? That is to say, how is it the manager’s fault?

  65. I love to watch Beachy pitch, but I don’t want to marry him, thank you very kindly, Ms. Bethany. How did he go undrafted?

  66. 107- Since the manager brought in a hitting coach with an approach that reduces the offense’s effectiveness. Since he employs tactics that reduce it further, like frequent hit-and-runs and bunting for a team with little speed or bunting ability. Since he sits there like a lump when umpires hose us, and he overmanages when it does the least good.

MRSA may not have created the bad offense, but he made it worse. And if this is the dreaded grousing about grousing about the grousing, fine.

  67. When the Braves keep bunting and failing at it, you might think they would try hitting away more. The run expectancy is higher when you don’t bunt. The only times this team should bunt should be with the pitcher or in a tie game late.

“If you play for one run, that’s all you’ll get” – Earl Weaver

Same thing with stealing, as much as the Braves get caught, you’d think they’d learn to stop.

  68. @110 Ha, I think it’s safe to say that soon Beachy will have made more in one year than any of us will make in a lifetime.

  69. What makes you think Beachy wants to get married? There’s no evidence, none whatsoever, that Beachy is ready to get married. What if he wants to date for a while? What if he’s gay? Ever think of that? No, you haven’t, and nobody else here has, either. Typical Braves Journal fan…sheesh.

  70. Beachy now has 7+ K’s in 6 of his 9 starts.

48.1IP 39H 13BB 55K through his start so far today. Sure am glad he wasnt traded for the likes of Lorenzo Cain.

  71. Beachy’s doing great. But 9 K’s in 4 IP.. McCann should probably tell him to stop trying to strike everybody out. Maybe tell him that strikeouts are boring! And that, besides that, they’re fascist. He should tell him to throw some ground balls – it’s more democratic.

  72. I wonder what the Blue Jay announcers are thinking about Beachy. They couldnt believe that Minor was getting sent down. Guess they can see why now.

5IP 11K’s and only 82 pitches. I guess they will let him throw 100 pitches still?

  73. @119 I am afraid we would lose you when Beachy signs that 100+ million contract as a free agent. Do not break our hearts.

  74. Sansho, are we really going to assume that bethany is a braves journal fan? I see no proof, absent her presence here, that she is a fan of braves journal.

    Good luck with that.

  75. Corey Patterson really sucks! Seriously, how good could he have been as a leadoff hitter type if he didn’t think he was the second coming of Ken Griffey Jr.? What a waste!

  76. I don’t really get why McCann was trying to bunt when the last time he was up HE HIT A FUCKING HOME RUN.

  77. I just got out of a string of meetings, and I think I might be seeing double. I mean, that can’t be eleven strikeouts over five innings for the Beachy.

  78. Bethany is too much woman for just one man. Ask her and she has to share one with Stu.

  79. Is Chipper retiring after the game? Between the hair and the shades, he looks to have one foot back in Florida already.

  80. #127 – He has to know that he sucks by now. He’s left handed and Uggla still hit a HR off of him.

  81. It’s not often you get two chances to make the same robbing catch. I guess 1-2 out there ain’t bad.

  82. Ugh, Fredi must have a vendetta against Venters’ elbow. It’s a four run lead against a team that sucks offensively right now! Why?!

  83. Guess he was already warmed up? Kimbrel better not pitch the 9th (assuming it’s a 4 run lead or more).

  84. @156, Because he hasn’t gotten work in a whi–err…Bautista is LH oh wait, uhhhh…

  85. I get trying to win the game, but this isn’t game 7 of the World Series. We might actually have play one of those this year, and it’d be nice if Venters still had a left arm at that point. Guess he’d rather have Proctor well rested instead.

  86. I’d use Venters with the off-day tomorrow. You can’t win Game 7 unless you get there.

  87. Fredi’s going to set up a simulated game tomorrow just so Venters can get his inning in.

  88. To finish off the sweep.

Sure is nice to win some games at home. Esp vs these two teams, TEX and TOR.

  89. Not thrilled that we used Venters and Kimbrel, but I’m happy to get a sweep against a good team.

  90. rob etc at 174,

Now, if we can just beat the dregs.

    “BEAT THE DREGS!!!”

    “BEAT THE DREGS!!!”

  91. I hate the bunting and attempted steals as much as the next guy, but man I get tired of hearing about the way Fredi uses Venters/Kimbrel. Those guy throw 20 pitches max per outing. Their arms aren’t going to fall off.

  92. Should we trade our pitching prospects? Presumably we’d get some offense in return, though I have no idea what.

A Jurrjens, Hanson, Medlen, Beachy, Minor/Teheran rotation sounds incredible, IMO.

  93. As much as the Braves suck in some respects, you have to give them credit for resilience. I thought they were going in the tank a few days ago. It’s hard to believe this team has the 5th best record in baseball.

“Should we trade our pitching prospects? Presumably we’d get some offense in return, though I have no idea what.”

Maybe trade for Aubrey Huff and Cody Ross–it worked for the Giants.
