ESPN – Braves vs. Cardinals Box Score, August 24 2007 – MLB
So, it’s one of the two nights when the Braves should win, and they did. At first, it looked rather like one of those nights where they have a lot of hits but can’t score. In the first, Harris led off with a triple but was erased on a groundout by Chipper after KJ struck out. In the second, they loaded the bases with two out but Harris grounded out.
But in the third, McCann hit a double off the wall to score KJ and Teixeira. John Smoltz had his one rough inning of the night in the bottom of the inning, and the Cardinals tied it on a two-out double. But the Braves came back and busted it open in the fourth. The first run scored when gritty, gutty, putrid David Eckstein dropped a relay from the second baseman and let it run into center, scoring Escobar. Chipper doubled two home to make it 5-2. Teixeira singled home Chipper, and Andruw later doubled him home to finish the scoring.
Smoltz was extra sharp, allowing just six hits — just three outside the third — striking out six and walking none. He’d thrown 103 pitches, so with the big lead Bobby went to the pen for Joey Devine. Ha ha! Just kidding. He used Mahay and Moylan again. Their arms probably won’t literally fall off.
This Wickman thing is pretty disturbing. Andruw came out in the media saying that Wickman was whining about being used in non-save situations (like in a tie game in the twelfth). Bobby apparently got pissed off and had the Braves get rid of him. I can never recall any such thing happening before during Bobby’s tenure. For that matter, I can’t recall Andruw ever going after a teammate, or former teammate, in the media. I don’t know, maybe this will be a spark. More likely, a win tomorrow followed by another three-game losing streak.

The Devine comment had me chuckling. Thanks, Mac.
This still has me depressed:

One thing I haven’t been able to figure out all season is how TBS is going to broadcast all four division series. I mean, they can’t possible show every game, can they? Does that mean there are some playoff games that won’t be televised naitonally? That can’t be good for the sport.
To add context to AJ’s quote, on the radio Pete made a comment about how the media had excluded the rest of that quote which was something like, “of course, the same thing could be said about me this year.”
FWIW.
Today, Devine was quoted on mlb.com as saying:
“I feel like I’m back to being the old Joey Devine.”
I think he wanted us to feel COMFORTED by that statement…but I’m not so sure I do.
‘Rissa,
I think they’ll make use of TNT when necessary.
If there’s anything more discomforting than someone referring to himself in the third person, it’s when he refers to himself in the third person and in the past tense.
Dane Cook’s on Conan….I can’t avoid this tool!
Dane Cook delenda est!
He’s ruining my life with his lack of talent or any other redeeming qualities!
I agree.
“Joey Devine feels like Joey Devine is back to being the old Joey Devine. Joey Devine, y’all.”
Been trying to come up with a comparison for how big of a douche I think Dane Cook is and I can’t come up with one. Anyone?
Nobody can top the Diceman for comic douchebaggery.
in other news, Michael Vick is still an a-hole
I’m glad that Arthur Blank has accepted Goodell’s suspension on Vick. Its time for these guys to clean up the league
As a fan of standup comedy, I’ve disliked Dane Cook since long before he hit it big. I just hate how aggressively and loudly he talks…and how he repeats all of the punchlines of his jokes and everything he says several times in his act. All his jokes take at least 10 minutes to get through because of that and theyre never any good. But back in the day, you could look the other way and ignore him because…who the f was dane cook?
But now, with that tv show and the lame movies…it’s like he’s become the biggest mainstream comedian in the country…and he’s an unlikeable hack! I disapprove.
But still, I could avoid him…just don’t watch his stuff, ignore him, etc. But then….then…then, he crossed the line. They put him in the G*d D*mn baseball playoff ad campaign and show it all the f’n time during nationally televised games…games that I want to watch. In other words, unavoidable exposure to Dane cook 😯 😯 😯 worst. case. scenario.
and that, my friends is why all year, as all of you have gone through your various “delenda est” phases (langerhans, thorman, davies, woodward, even some scattered cries for harris and andruw at times….all worthy causes in their own right) that I have remained focused on the TRUE enemy. The true one that must be destroyed. The one. The only. The horrible. Dane Cook.
Dane Cook delenda est, mi amici.
Whoa Douglass, easy there, wait no, it’s Dane Cook. What a complete bag of douche. What’s remarkable is I have one friend who went to see him live (with his girlfriend). He thinks the guy is hilarious. When arguing with him, the old fallback is “well you think Dane Cook is funny, so what the hell do you know.” He is literally the only human being that is non female who can tolerate the guy.
easy there?
It’s 1:15 AM, what better time of night than to write rambling essays about hack comedians who aren’t worth the attention?
😉
sansho1,
Clay actually crossed my mind but I wasn’t sure if the douchebaggery of Dane Cook went that far. I mean, you are 100% correct, Diceman is the master and owner of Douche. Cook is more like a Choad, I guess.
Yeah…I would go with Choad…instead I’m gonna go with queef.
Say what you will about Dane Cook… but he brings people together!
Ebert on Dice Rules:
“Dice Rules is one of the most appalling movies I have ever seen. It could not be more damaging to the career of Andrew Dice Clay if it had been made as a documentary by someone who hated him…It is eerie, watching the shots of the audience. You never see anyone just plain laughing, as if they’d heard something that was funny. You see, instead, behavior more appropriate at a fascist rally, as his fans stick their fists in the air and chant his name as if he were making some kind of statement for them.”
Dane Cook is merely a moron.
True…I haven’t seen this much agreement on the board all year.
Bravesjournal- united behind one guiding principle: Dane Cook (and whichever Brave is sucking at the moment) delenda est.
so Smoltz is now at 12-6 with a 3.01 ERA, other than the Hr’s he’s allowed, his numbers and Huddy are almost identical. Huddy has 3 more wins in 2 more starts that Smoltz, but Smoltz has 38 more k’s. Does this get Smoltz into the CY young conversation?
So I’m totally on board with this Dane Cook delenda est thing. I used to date a girl that loved him. Which is unfortunate, considering all of the far better comedians out there. Whatever.
Good to see a win get posted, even if I wasn’t able to listen to this one.
The Devine comment was nice, Mac. Seriously, it’s just a shock that these guys get called up and shorten the bench because we’ve got tired arms in the ‘pen only to not use them with a 5-run lead. I’d be willing to bet that Devine has the lowest innings pitched/games on the 25-man ratio of, well, any pitcher in MLB. Cox just refuses to bring him in!
csg- na. When you’ve got guys posting more Ws, more Ks, more IP, and an ERA one run lower, it’s hard to get into the conversation. Huddy’s got more IP and Ws, which is why he’s in it.
And honestly, Ks don’t matter much when talking about previous success IMO. I’ll maybe use it as a tie-breaker for dominance type consideration, but if a guy posts an ERA around 3.00 with 50Ks or with 150, it doesn’t much matter to me. Especially when they’re on the same team so defense isn’t an issue.
Excellent work on the subheading of the board, Mac.
It makes me so happy/proud….it almost brings tears to my eyes….until I remember Dane Cook, and then my blood pressure and heartbeat rise again and I wake up my roommates grumbling unitelligable profanity to myself even though I’m sitting in a room by myself at the computer…
😡 😡 😡 😡
Going for the triple-post with a….
Fun Smoltz Fact of the Day!
While John Smoltz currently ranks 16th on the all-time strikeout list with 2920, he will most likely finish behind former teammate Greg Maddux (3252, good for 11th). While Smoltz is known as the better strikeout pitcher, Maddux’s nearly 1500 additional IP give him the career lead.
So yeah, Smoltz is awesome. But Maddux? Well, he’s an all-time great.
… you know, it just hit me. He’ll only bring in Devine in extra-inning games. The regular nine-inning games don’t mean squat unless the starter has been knocked out in the second inning.
The only funny thing I ever heard Andrew “Dice” Clay say was about Gene Simmons’ bizarre hairpiece (headpiece?). He said Simmons looked like “he’s wearing a fuckin’ coyote in his head.”
The Dane Cook playoff commercials are a bit much for my tastes too, but he’s not trying to make jokes, so what’s the big deal?
I’ll take Dane Cook over the likes of Carlos Mencia and Jimmy Fallon any day. Those two make my blood boil.
Add me to the “Dane Cook delenda est” crowd. He’s so wildly unfunny, he actually makes Carrot Top seem less heinous.
Nahhhh, scratch that. Carrot Top, delenda est. The best part for me about Carrot Top being so embarrssingly unfunny…he’s a Gator.
Thank God for the Braves win. We may win tonight…but Mac’s right…we’ll probably then lose the next 3. Aggravating.
I didn’t see the ninth inning of the game last night. Any reason why Mahay pitched two-thirds of an inning in the ninth and Moylan came in to get the last out?
Dan, nope…Bobby just had to find a way to get Moylan in the game. Thats the only reason.
Is Devine baseball’s newest thing to Rickey Henderson?
notes from trade rumors: A source tells me the Braves have had internal discussions about trading Edgar Renteria in the offseason and giving the shortstop job to Yunel Escobar. The Cardinals, Tigers, and A’s could be interested.
You know I dont think anyone will miss Big Lots (why didnt we come up with that earlier). He didnt throw side sessions or do workouts like the other guys and now it looks as if he complained all the time. Give me Acosta or Ascanio before Wickman right now. Think Cleveland would take him back, give us Carmona…
I’ll say this now — I’m growing more concerned about having to rely on Willie Harris in the leadoff spot.
Wickman wasn’t good enough to be an arrogant douche bag
I must be too old to know who the hell Dane Cook is, but it sounds like I don’t want to.
IMO, as good as Hudson has been, Smoltz is the better pitcher and is certainly the guy I would want out there in a big game. The value of being able to go deep into games is really huge. I am just more and more amazed by Smoltzie the more I see him pitch. As much as I complain about the Braves now, I have to think back and remember what we had in the 90s–Smoltz, Glavine, and Maddux in their prime on the same staff. Wow!
I know Willie is struggling right now, but at least he isnt swinging at the 1st pitches anymore. He’s drawing a lot of deep walks and is has gotten several walks and scored runs in the last few games. He’s been playing a lot lately, he may need a day off or two. he’s still better than I had ever imagined so I wont complain
I’m not a huge Dane Cook fan, but he’s no Carlos Mencia in the realm of suckitude. How this guy has his own show is beyond me…
Six of the wins have come from Buddy Carlyle, who has struggled lately, but he’s still the only Atlanta starter besides Hudson and Smoltz to win a game in August.
ouch…
what about Wickman for Brett Tomko…didnt David Wells just replace him in there rotation. Its not as if Tomko would be a savior, but he may be able to give us some depth next year at the position.. yes / no / maybe
Brett Tomko = Right Handed Mark Redman
I’m not worried about Willie Harris in the leadoff spot because he’s not up there all the time. It’s either Escobar or Harris, and right now, I’ll take either of them, because they’re both streaky.
Here’s to Hudson winning tonight and Reyes getting his first win on Sunday!
TSS,
Hot damn, you’re right. I’ll take Cormier over him any day.
no one should ever be compared to Mark Redman
Speaking of Mark Redman, he just signed a minor league contract with the Rockies.
Kyle Davies thinks Mark Redman sucks.
Marc Schnieder, count me in as an old fart too. Who the hell is Dane Cook? Never mind I don’t care.
The Wickie thing is weird. Usually the guys the Braves hate are dropped after the season is over. Wickie has just set a new standard…he’s been branded a worse teammate than Kenny Lofton and Brett Boone. His mother should be so proud.
Bobby has 3 rules from what I gather.
Be on time, No music in the clubhouse and do what he tells you to do. You’d think that a multi million dollar professional should be able to do that.
Give Kelly Johnson his leadoff spot back already. The guy is going to be here for a while unlike Willie Harris. Johnson has second base locked up for years it appears now.
Knowing Cox, there will be a leadoff platoon next season between Escobar and Johnson. Probably even closer by committee when Mike Gonzalez is back, because we all know Gonzalez can’t get right-handers out.
Indians’ response to Wickman’s release?
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070824&content_id=2167846&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
Well…Dan I read the article but what was the response.
Damn I’m good. I called for Wickman’s release early Friday. When I ran what Chipper saying “about pitcher not being able to cover 1st”, I knew something wasn’t right in the clubhouse.
One thing I like about Bobby and JS…if pissed BC, you better believe JS will get out of town ASAP. I will miss this tandem.
JOHN SMOLTZ…is incredible. The way pitching is right now in baseball, Maddux and Smoltz could pitch until they are 45 y/o. They both won last night which was sweet, even though we couldn’t gain ground on the Padres.
If Smoltz wanted to, he could pitch even longer than that throwing knuckleballs. He used that very effectively years ago when he was trying to save wear on his elbow and stay in the rotation.
Yea you are right Ron. That shows you what a gift it is to pitch in the major leagues and to be great at it. I mean we see people like Buddy Carlyle(no offense Buddy) or even Kip Wells or the Mark Redmans just get crushed. Then we see the old men like Smoltz and Maddux continuing to be great(Smoltz) or good(Maddux) this late in their careers…just amazing.
And of course if Smoltz really wanted to mess with people he could go back to closing later in his career.
