No video because I forgot. Discuss… At some point in the next six days, the following statement will be heard: “At designated hitter, batting ninth, Pete Orr.”
UPDATE: Ouch. I’m having another one of my sinus attacks. Hopefully this will be resolved in a few days, but for now, I think we’re going to have another morning recap. Sorry.

Has there not been an announcement yet about sending down one of the pitchers to bring up a position player for these interleague games? I was really hoping Pena would get brought up so Salty and McCann could both play in these games with a DH. Paronto could probably use some work in AAA.
At some point in the next six days, the following statement will be heard: “At designated hitter, batting ninth, Pete Orr.”
followed by the sound of me vomiting….
Pete Orr as a DH is akin to…
…a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest.
…a gun with no bullets.
…another pop-gun utility infielder taking up someone else’s ABs.
When we lose Andruw, these are the people we should look at trading for
Alex Rios and one of Tampa Bay’s OF’s
Top Starter and another(Joe Blanton, Noah Lowry)
Will at Chop-N-Change suggests AJ Burnett for a deal revolving around Yunel + prospects, but I doubt the Jays would do that, or the Braves pick up all of Burnett’s salary.
Andruw ain’t gone yet.
“At designated hitter, batting ninth, Pete Orr.”
I threw up in my mouth a little bit when I read that.
A pretty terrible thought, though balanced nicely by the lack of video.
I will be at the Hudson vs Santana game on Thursday (first row seats on the third base line)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m excited. Should be a great game either way.
I would think Salty would get the bulk of DH time.
Why put Pete Orr at DH when we could use Kyle Davies? Justin Heyward could outhit him.
Shouldn’t be designated ‘batter’ Hitter and Orr in the same sentence is sort of like saying democratic reformer and Putin in the same sentence isn’t it?
Please make a trade involving Salty to Cincy for Adam Dunn
Mike, Bobby isn’t going to want both catchers in the starting lineup. So someone who shouldn’t be there will be in the lineup.
Although I think you’re actually going to hear, “Now batting ninth, the designated hitter, Chris Woodward… snort, snigger, ha ha ha HA HA HA!” You may begin the abdominal cramping.
I’d rather they just skip the number nine spot in the line up, give the opposing team a free out, and go to the top of the line up than have Orr hit as a DH. That’s a big handicap, but still, it’s Orr we’re talking about here.
I’d rather see Yates or Paronto DH than Orr. But hey, you can’t beat Orr’s pinch running skills. He’s got pictures somewhere.
Mike, Bobby isn’t going to want both catchers in the starting lineup. So someone who shouldn’t be there will be in the lineup.
I don’t know, the worst thing that could happen is if McCann gets hurt, you shift Salty over and lose the DH advantage. Bobby’s never been that shy about losing the DH, in fact it’s a bit of an Braves interleague tradition.
I expect to see Salty at DH. Which of course is still wrong since he’s the better defensive catcher, but at least it’s closer to right.
Why assume Cox will put Orr in the ninth spot? I’m thinking the 3 hole … 🙂
Orr should lead off because he is fast. Andruw should hit fourth because he swings really hard. Woodward should play because what he lacks in talent he makes up for in moxie and veteran leadership. Too bad we don’t have Lockhardt any more to bat second because he was good at moving the runner over. Of course if Lockhardt were on the team, Woodward would not be on the club (only one person can possess the pictures).
True, Bobby does sacrifice the DH advantage, but I still don’t see him starting both of our catchers. It’s something he has usually worked hard to avoid, and we’ve already seen a lot of Pradorrward because of it.
CJ, there’s always at least two copies of The Pictures- one for hitters and one for pitchers. And often, more like four or five. Pradorrward had at least two among them, Paronto’s got one, Cormier had one.
It seems like an easy fix for me…bring up Pena and start McCann at catcher and Salty at DH.
It doesnt make much since, but Im sure bobby will keep Salty on the bench. He’s more likely to have Harris in LF and Diaz at DH.
anyone know who our new emergency catcher is now that Wilson has been cut?
I expect to see Harris is LF and Diaz batting DH. However, I would rather have Salty there.
Lando, I’m jealous. Hopefully we’ll get the good Huddy that night.
I would ship Escobar for Burnett, but not if we have to eat most of his salary. He’s too injury prone, but he would be a nice addition
Diaz and Orr are both emergency catchers
Isn’t it Orr?
FWIW, this past weekend vs. Detroit, the Mets DHed LoDuca & let Castro catch.
#21 – I think mostly everyone at this site has been asking for that to happen for the last 3-4 weeks
I think we should catch Salty and let McCann DH to give his legs/ankle some rest
Also, a Google News search for “chipper jones” seems to indicate that he’s coming back very soon, perhaps as soon as tonight. Would it be too logical to DH him and play Escobar at third, jettisoning Woodward, Prado, or Orr to make room?
csg, me too. I root for both teams but I will be wearing a braves hat and displaying a braves flag on the railing in front of me (if allowed) so I hope it is the good huddy.
I’d assume Bobby will give Chipper an extra day or two off after Chipper proclaims himself healthy enough to hit, it seems to be Bobby’s style. Hopefully Chipper doesn’t rush himself back into the lineup just to further injury his fragile hands.
fragile hands/every other body part
mac,
i wouldn’t hold your breath for aj burnett. nothing against Will, but he’s always speculating about the brave’s next move.
Chipper to DH?
Off to YankeeLand to see the team with the dumbest uniforms since the ’76 Padres…
Well I guess Ichiro wont go to Cleveland next year. Check out his comments about the city that is a “mistake by the lake.” He would punch himself in the face before going there. My guess is the fans will not appreciate this…
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6916044
Look at what the cat dragged in to Pittsburgh today: http://pittsburgh.pirates.mlb.com/team/transactions.jsp?c_id=pit
i am not too familiar with the rule, but having salty in as dh wouldnt be like sacrificing our backup catcher. if something happened to mccann, couldnt salty just go to catcher and we bring in another dh? salty would be available to catch and be available to hit. 2 pluses. therefore, no question that salty should be the dh, unless he is catching. if not, then it’s just stupid.
If the DH enters the game defensively, the team loses the DH and the pitcher has to bat. This has happened to the Braves several times in interleague play.
Ryan,
The problem is that if you shift your DH into the field, you lose the DH and your pitcher hits in the replaced position player’s spot.
So DH-ing a second catcher is a calculated risk that some managers take and some don’t.
Or they could send one of the utility infielders down, since Willie can play second and third, and bring Pena backup, DH McCann and put Salty behind the plate, and then when Chipper is ready use him as the DH put Salty at first, and let McCann catch. They could also send one of the mop-up pitchers down. None of this will happen though since it makes to much damn sense.
Update from DOB: http://tinyurl.com/yst5yz
No roster moves today – they’re just going to wait to activate Chipper tomorrow or Thursday and send down one of the pitchers.
How often does the catcher get hurt in game in such a way that he can’t continue? That’s my question.
Very, very rarely.
The benefit of batting both McCann and Salty at the same time (interleague or not) far exceeds the damage done on the outside chance that you might have to play the emergency catcher out of position for a few innings in a single game.
So what if you lose one freakin’ game because you had to use your emergency catcher. It’s not like it’s an automatic loss anyway.
Meanwhile, you can win several games by having your best hitters in the lineup.
What’s the deal?
Don’t forget that Orr and Diaz can play emergency catcher…I say get Salty and McCann both in the lineup…
#35
or the dumbest looking uniforms since the 2007 padres
Well you do lose the ability of having your “normal” DH, but at that point, it’s just like managing in the NL and you can still pinch hit for your pitchers like you would in an NL game. It’s certainly not efficient, but it’s not entirely the worst thing in the world.
I say hit Salty and McCann at the same time and see what happens, although we all know that’s probably not going to happen.
Our wish has been granted…but no Chipper.
2b- Johnson
LF- Harris
C- McCann
CF- Jones
RF- Francoeur
DH- Saltalamacchia
1b- Thorman
SS- Escobar
3B- Orr

Well, sumbitch. I was wrong. Lineup:
Johnson 2B
Harris LF
McCann C
AJones CF
Frenchy RF
Salty DH
Thorman 1B
Escobar SS
Orr 3B
Well, I was half-right… New poll.
Oh, here’s the Twin’s…
2b- Castillo
c- Mauer
rf- Cuddyer
1b- Morneau
cf- Hunter
dh- Redmond
lf- Ford
3b- Punto
ss- Bartlett
This might be a dumb question, but if McCann is hurting with “minor injuries” then why don’t they DH him and have Salty catch ?
52, my thoughts exactly.
Also the Twins have two catchers in the lineup. Redmond caught Sunday against the Natspos.
another rookie that will make us look putrid tonight?
I’m going to the game Saturday in Cleveland…
I was wondering if we could maybe make a wagering game out of this:
Over-under on Chipper being in the lineup?
Ah…those painful ’91 flashbacks
Mac,
You forgot to add “Cormier’s Arm” to the poll.
Also, according to Gameday, inside Domes the wind blows at -1 miles per hour.
Come on Mac, you made it impossible for me not to pick “orr’s entire body.”
I don’t see anything problematic if it keeps him on the shelf.
Very true.
Is Bobby just being super careful as always with Edgar, or is it serious?
I think Bobby’s just being extra careful as always. He has that extra day rule of thumb. Also, it doesn’t hurt to showcase Escobar at SS a little bit.
Yeah, I’m going to have to go to bed now. See you tomorrow.
Nighty Mac.
Jeffrey!
JEFF!!
So much for a 22 game homerun drought!
RIP: Frenchy Home run drought
Lasting from May 19 to June 12
Thor’s pop-up streak still alive and well though..
Mac, dude, what’s with the reverse-v cap bill stylings?
The Twins announcer sounds as if he’s filling out a tax form.
Gotta love Willie!
I hope Kent Hrbek falls over dead by the end of this game.
amen, david. I had to come in here hearing that rat bastard fink Hrbek on FSN North on my web connection. I hate this S.O.B. He is an effing cheater.
I hate him even more after that little display. What a fat, lying fuck he is.
Also, Verlander through eight with a no-no.
Let’s see…
Curt Schilling no hitter through eight, ESPN breaks up Sportcenter to show the live game…
Verlander no-no through eight and they keep on showing poker…oh..excuse me, they have a program alert at the bottom of the screen.
Yeah, Jay10, if it isn’t happening in Boston or NY it isn’t really important.
They showed him pitch the eighth. It just didn’t last very long.
I had a coach once who said that walks become runs…
I guess dude was right.
Pete Orr ladies and gentlemen…
Ok..I stand corrected…they switched over.
Kyle B., that axiom only applies to walks where Orr/Prado/Woodward do not follow in the lineup.
I gotta be honest, I had actually never seen Antonio Alfonseca’s sixth finger before tonight…
http://www.bobanddan.com/images/Bob/Alfonseca.jpg
there’s two away…come on Verlander!
That is one interesting pinky-pinky
No HITTER!
Unbelievable. A no-no
Pete Van Wieren says that Bobby really wants to get back down to 12 pitchers so he can get that position player on the bench. WELL THEN FUCKING DO IT THEN! YOU’RE THE MANAGER! CHRIST! We’ve practically got 15 pitchers when you consider that Woodward and Orr hit no better than one.
The oddest stat out of the game is Bill Hall’s 3 walks. What is up with that?
verlander > schilling
Chris Woodward has to go.
Classic Kyle Davies.
3 great innings, complete meltdown after that.
Come on, Davies!
You suck, Kyle.
Verlander hit 102 in the ninth….very impressive.
Great job Kyle….
Why leave him in when he is obviously in the “KD-zone?” 3-1 is not a big gap, but 5-1 is not that easy for this erratic offense.
Argh!
Perhaps the Vulture can work his magic with no lead to lose.
Thor…. damn
I know Booby is the world’s biggest fan of platoons, but this has got to stop. Just play your best lineup damnit! Diaz vs a righty is still better than Orr
Snitker is terrible.
Should we start getting worried about McCann’s lumber? Is he more of a .275 hitter than what we saw last year?
Just joining the game–it looks like Kyle Davies is back to his old tricks, with his ERA headed back to around 6.00.
The Phillies have now won….
Hey, who is going to be pitching next Tuesday? Does anyone have powers of predicting that?
Nice work by The Vulture.
Rob,
Miss Cleo just told me it would be Huddy..
Rob,
Tim Hudson. That could obviously change, but right now that is his scheduled day to pitch.
I don’t know if it’s right, but yahoo has Brad Thompson as having given up 20 hits and seven walks in 4 2/3. That’s more amazing than Verlander’s no-hitter. LaRussa must be passed out.
Listening to XM.. the Twin’s radio guy said “Marcie McBride.” That’s funny stuff.
Damn!!
Ugh.
end of the 5th and the royals 3rd batter (teahen) is 6 for 7.
David,
Yahoo’s typos are hilarious…I did see the first inning of the Cards game…KC was leading 5-0 and I thought was quite enough for me…
that’s an error. He’s really 3-4. Check Gameday
Holy shitt…he has given up 20 hits…hahahahahaa…15-0! WTF!
K.C.’s second baseman is 6-6
Lil’ Tony is 0-6 so far, and I’m not surprised.
er – I agree with your assessment.
Nothing defies baseball logic like Pete Orr and Woodward.
I’ll give the Vulture credit, he looks better than he has all year. The Braves are once again outhitting a team and losing because of one bad inning.
Ok…Yahoo is wrong…i just turned to the game, it’s in the 6th…KC leads 8-0.
Bummer… German only has 3 hits.. not 6
so you’re right. this obviously is a typo. man, i really was freakin’ out a little. i was thinking that the leadoff hitter might get 11-12 ab’s. i guess it’s really just 8-0.
Yahoo occasionally just farts all over itself. I’m not really sure how it happens, but it’s randomness all over.
ESPN has it 8-0 Royals, with Teahen a more manageable 3-4.
(Though I have him on two fantasy teams…I’d have liked 6-7, but a team would have to average over 10 hitters per inning to get a guy 7 ABs in 5 innings.)
#93,
It’s actually weirder than that.
Since he came up, Davies has had the following stats:
Pitches 1-45 – 102 ER in 104 IP – 8.83 ERA
Pitches 46-90 – 39 ER in 91 1/3 IP – 3.84 ERA
Pitches 91+ – 3 ER in 18 1/3 IP – 1.48 ERA
This year it seems like the first inning and the 4th/5th are the ones that kill him.
Probably small sample size on some or all of this but I thought it was interesting.
time for the rally caps kids!
that is a pretty dirty pitch. how can anyone hit this neshek guy.
I thought it had to be wrong, but I didn’t study the box score or anything. I did, however, remember LaRussa leaving in Marquis long enough to give up 12 earned runs on two separate occasions last season.
no way we get 3 off of Nathan, game over
maybe,
we’ve got salty, thor, and escobar up in the 9th
You’re probably right, csg, but it should be interesting to see how Salty looks facing him.
did anyone see that ridiculous stat last inning.
We have now trailed in 61 of our last 90 innings. Most in the majors
#127
I predict a Orr grand slam to give us a win
that is ridiculous
boyer needs a vacation
silly punto!
ok…it’s over
@130
Your Orr comment reminded me of my favorite Mark Lemke moment – a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs to win a game against the Expos. Box score here: http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/ATL/ATL199405070.shtml.
Anyways, I remember telling a friend that I was watching a game with that the game was over because Lemke sucked. Next pitch – gone! It would be great if Orr could give us a moment like that.
we have given up 13 hits this game, and 12 of them are singles.
I apologize – remove that period from the end of the URL to get the page to work.
dont trade Salty
nice
he has got to learn to play first
Meanwhile, John Maine’s luck is running out. The Dodgers have gone back to back to back. Kuo hit the third one.
i’m shocked. a pop up. who would of thunk?
ok, a fly but still
Well, at least we can blame this loss on Orr.
andruw wouldnt have caught that.
@144
…orr not
Ill take Hunter at 12 mil over Andruw at 16 mil.
If the Mets lose it’ll make 8 of their last nine. We have to play better
Announcers said we’ll have Renty and Chip in the lineup tomorrow
nope but we can blame it on another terrible outing from Davies
Well, at least we can blame this loss on Kelly.
oh well
does anyone think Davies can ever be better than a #3-4 guy
#3-4 guy? I’d like him to be at least a useable #5 guy right now.
KLB, if we had another option, maybe we do in Harrison, I say send him down. He isnt a decent #5 right now and we have to get someone. I dont know if he’ll ever get to where he can be a #3 or 4.
The Orioles are looking at options for trading Trachsel. Im not a fan but he wouldnt cost us a top notch prospect I wouldnt think
No, I agree that I don’t think there are any other options. Some may say that after tonight’s performance, Villareal should get some consideration, but I’m not a believer.
I don’t think Harrison/Reyes will be in consideration until next year.
i don’t think we should bring harrison up yet, we need to let him mature.
davies needs a real pitching coach to help him out, time to call in maddux.
Im starting to think McDowell isnt the right guy. I would say give Villareal a few starts and see, he wont be any worse than Davies. Keep Moylan and all of our relievers here when Chip is activated and send Davies back to work on some things.
While were at it send Woodorr packing and bring back Pena
Since we are talking about pitching, here’s an interesting article about Mike Marshall and his “controversial” pitching school. For me, it’s always cool to see people working on new and different ways to throw a baseball.
link
How about this: a Kyle Davies/Zach Duke swap. Both of them may need a change of scenery to get going.
Phillip,
That would be great, but I highly doubt they would part with Duke for Davies…I wish there was a way we could get Snell…
Mets lost again; they’re now 2-9 in June.
The Mets are beginning to worry me alot less than the Phillies. At least with all of the Braves’ problems they are in the thick of the race….
The Mets lose 9 of 11, and the Braves are still in second place and still two games behind them. If the Braves had played halfway decent recently, they’d be easily in first place right now.
With the way the Mets and Braves are playing, the Phillies (1.0 GB of Braves now) may be in first place in about a week or so.
