I don’t know if this has been posted yet.
A story in which Jason Stark goes a long way toward convincing me that Andruw Jones in Barry Zito’s position playing equivalent and that we shouldn’t resign him.
That is, if there are any good starting pitchers to be had this off-season.

Posted this late in the last thread, so since it came up for discussion again, I thought I’d post it over here, too:
I have to say, looking at his list, the only two people I would have some disagreement on are the last two: Wickman and Jeff Suppan.
I absolutely agree with Barry Zito as the most overrated player in baseball today. If you look at his numbers, his last few years have mirrored Hudson’s last few years (coming into this year, anyway), and yet everyone acknowledged that Hudson was losing it while nobody seemed willing to do that with Zito. We’re talking about a guy who had two great years and sense then has done nothing.
As far as the disagreements though, surely there’s a more overrated closer in the game today than Wickman, and while I agree that Jeff Suppan isn’t all that great, I’m not sure he’s too highly regarded in the first place, so to call him overrated may be a little bit of a stretch.
I said that on a message board. Wickman’s stats are fouled up in two injury-plagued appearances and all of a sudden, he’s overrated. He helped the Braves’ bullpen get back on track, so he does deserve some credit.
I know why Chipper’s out. I think he was hurting big-time after one of those swings last night.
Nick
on May 24, 2007 at 4:28 pm
He had a weird swing near the end of last night’s game where he appeared to tweak something. That’s probably the reason, I would guess.
Wouldn’t it be nice BTW if Aybar hadn’t gone crazy (or if we just hadn’t made that trade at all, conversely) so that when we have to start a backup infielder, we could start somebody who would have a prayer of doing something that might be worth a damn?
Yes, it would, but that’s something we can’t change, so we’re going to have to live with our AAAA player in Prado.

I think Stark’s article is exactly what most of us already have noticed. He’s great but he is declining and definitely not worth 18 mil per year.

Andruw has always gotten by on natural talent, not hard work. I view him as a career under achiever. Many “baseball men” thought he was the next Mayes or Aaron. He has been a good player, but those guys were great. He’s always been content to be the “other Jones”. To be the #3 or #4 star on the team. No sound bites, no leadership, just making great catches, hitting a few homers, and liking his cars fast and his women faster. Now, he’s older, a bit slower, a bit achy, and has Satan for an agent. He cant just represent himself and take below market, this is his last big contract. So, for the first time, he is feeling the pressure. He has no drills or routines to fall back on to get himself in top form, he’s never been a hard worker. So when the time comes in a walk year to step it up, he swings harder. That doesnt work, he swings even harder and more often. We are watching a grown man being tossed out of the nest for the first time, unfortunately for him, he’s a professional athlete and works on national(okay regional) television.

I dont really care if Druw comes back one way or another. I would like to get something for him if he leaves, but thats just part of it. That money can go a long way and in a lot of different ways. I dont see Prado being able to move Johnson around the bases. Renteria should’ve stayed in the 2 hole with Diaz following him.

I really think its funny to watch Andruw swing at these slow curves like they’re straight fastballs. Its even better to watch him turn doubles into singles and what should only be one out into DP’s because he has to get up after falling down in the batters box. He’s more and more frustrating everyday. BUT, Here’s to him getting back on track tonight against Glavine

Well, after reading csg’s post, I agree that Renteria should be in his customary second spot. Why can’t francouer move up to three and have Andruw bat fourth all the way down lineup and let Prado bat 8th. I guess it is better than Orr playing.

on May 24, 2007 at 4:50 pm
I hope it’s that Chipper’s bruised hand is acting up and not an oblique injury. The oblique injury has nagged, and sent him to the DL, in the past.
Before we dog Andruw further, here are some numbers:
153, 159, 162, 161, 161, 154, 156, 154, 160, 156
Those are his numbers of games played for the last 10 years. Underachiever? I don’t think so.
He plays every day and (the last 2 months notwithstanding) put up great numbers—and ask the Atlanta pitching staff what they think of his defense.
And if we’re going to talk about someone’s taste in women (or fast cars), there’s another guy on the team we can discuss as well. But bringing that up wouldn’t have anything to do with evaluating his play either.

Yes, let’s not judge Orr for his luxury lifestyle. It’s what he does on the baseball diamond that counts.
I agreed with most of Stark had to say..especially Zito etc… but his J.D. Drew arguments didn’t really stick with me.
He mentioned All-Star appearances and All Star at bats…and I don’t think you can use that to call a guy underrated or overrated.
I mean, Redman was an “all-star” last season, and he pitches as if he had screwdrivers for arms…

Kind of off topic here but did anyone read the article on yahoo sports about Josh Hancock’s father blaming everyone else for his son’s death. His father said that Josh kept getting served with drinks so it’s the bars fault his son died. He also blamed the tow truck driver for being in the wrong place on the highway when Josh crashed in to the tow truck. You think maybe if Josh was smart enough to call a taxi or have a friend pick him up he would still be around today. What a bunch of bullshit. I am sorry but that is how I feel. Any thoughts anyone

ububba,
While he’s durable, his number of games played doesn’t mean he’s not an underachiever. I don’t think evaluating that is that simple. He was big in 2005, and he’s had an above average career, but he’s never been the player his talent would have allowed him to be. His approach to hitting will prevent him from ever being more than a .260-.275 a year hitter BA-wise, and hile his pitchers also may love his defense, he’s far from the defensive player he was nowadays. I agree with Starke on this one; his perception maybe has followed him too long.
I don’t not like Andruw Jones as a player (he still helps us win games), but using those two things to determine whether or not he’s an underachiever is insufficient, in my opinion.

Hancock’s father is suing
1. the restraunt/bar he was at
2. the tow truck drive
3. also, the driver of the vehicle the tow truck was assisting
maybe they stashed the mary j in his car and took off his seatbelt. Its a shame that people can just sue whoever they please these days. I feel sorry for the family, but this doesnt help anyone involved
You can argue whether or not Andruw is over-rated (to me, a generally pointless conversation—I care if the guy helps you win, not how he’s regarded by writers); but if a guy has been as consistent as Andruw has been for a solid decade, how can anyone say he should’ve been better? That’s who he is.
Year to year, his numbers are remarkably consistent and he’s been a great CF, even if he has seen some recent decline. I don’t see how we could’ve done better at that position in the past decade.
The ongoing Metfan question up here: Is Delgado hurt?
With the exception of that 9th-inning, 2-run dribbler single to beat the Cubs last week, Delgado has been a disaster this year. For the first 2 months, he’s been their Andruw.

One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces by Ben Folds Five!
I guess the angry dwarf is John Schuerholz–isn’t he really short?
The more we get to watch Druw in his walk year, the more he shows us that $15-18 mill can go a long way to helping us improve our starting rotation.

As long as we don’t actually spend it on Barry Zito.

Gotta love Delgado at 1B…
2007 NL 2out RBI 23 : leader Francoeur
Haha. Francoeur swings so hard his hat falls off. That’s awesome.
That’s an awesome at-bat by Frenchy.
Pretty good AB by Francoeur. I bet that’s the most pitches he’s ever seen in a single at bat.
I bet that’s the most pitches Francoeur’s ever seen in a single at bat.
I’m not really sure how you can call a likely HOFer an underachiever, but whatever.
Ruben Gotay? Seriously? Is Randolph trying to match Bobby for some reason?
Somehow, it took me until last week to realize how much Chip Caray sucks.
Now that the scales have fallen, yeah, this is grating.
But I like our odds today, since it doesn’t seem like Glavine’s able to locate.
The Mighty Matt!
DIAZ!!!
Lord these Met announcers are just brutal. Bunch of morons.
They are still far better than Chip.
KJ!! GREAT play! Prado, THAT is how you play second.
Nice play by KJ!!!
Great play by Renteria for the second out as well. I am getting sicked of those infield hits.
MMMM,Diaz.
Too bad–the Braves need to capitalize on opportunities like the one they just had….
Today’s Trivia Question answer is the Giants in our commentator guess. Let me see….
Nice inning Smoltzie!
Seems like the two-out hits only come in bunches…we haven’t seen many of those recently I think…
That was quick…
That’s a great play from Renteria.
Wow, Renteria making the haters look silly!
wow!
Props to Renteria for his defense tonight.
Pretty hard to lose with this kind of defense.
Nice Edgar, very nice!!!
Ozzie Smith is good tonight
good job Renty ^.*
I am only able to listen on MLB Gameday so I missed watching Renty; but I am glad that I am not watching Andruw,,,
Braves need some runs…
Delgado appears to be more done than a roast left in the oven overnight.

Come on, Smoltzie.
I love Smoltzie.
Well done Smoltzie! Hope the Braves can get some insurance runs…
kc,
Indeed!
I guess it’s gonna be Soriano then Wickmania.
Why Woodward of all people?
Woodward for Smoltz? The Mets must be terrified by all of the firepower we have on our bench….
Salty is like the best player on the bench. Why not throw him in there to bat? He got two hits off the unhittable Perez last night.
Woodward’s swing is so powerful…
Don’t wanna use the other catcher, esp. when you’re ahead. No need right now.
Free Yunel Escobar!
True.
Delgado’s not hurt. I didn’t expect him to age well, and he hasn’t.
KJ!
The deadly combo of Woodward and Prado…
I would guess that Maddux isn’t a music fan.
lets get Smoltzie #200
Eddie Perez is hilarious.
wow, 98 mph from Sori…
At least Prado is playing good defense tonight…
Chip got cortizone shots in both hands today
time for a change up or slider
well take that
Sori needs to work on his slider more…he is hanging them…
Soriano rules!!
Soriano was sure hanging that slider.
Time for some runs–Bobby needlessly threw away an out letting Woodward hit. Where have our bats gone?
Given our current bench, Bobby doesn’t have a lotta options.
Wickmania!
Okay, okay…
Wickman is throwing harder than ever. For those who dont like Wickman anymore. His stats at the Ted.
14s/14opp 0.35 ERA
time for a DP
YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE OUT, KJ.
dangit
Bad time for an error, KJ.
extra base hit ties the game now
Nnnggggggg
C’mon, one more, Big Boy…
Oh, Lord.
Happy to get the out, but Reyes is scary….
atta baby!!!!!
….aaaaand exhale
Woo!
I love it when he pops up.
Congrats, Smoltzie.
Wickmania!!
Congratulations to Smoltzie!
I love it so much when we beat the Mets. Good job Wickman!!!
John Smoltz cements his Cooperstown invitation tonight, Congrats!
I will say this again, I love Smoltzie.
SMOLTZIE!!!! good job by Wick after the error. Now at the Ted
15 for 15, good ovation from the fans after the game
I think Smoltz is now the NL win leader.
The Braves are 6-3 against the Mets…think Oliver Perez is very important very the Mets?
ububba I believe your correct…
should Wick be charged with an ER after the error?
No, the error is unearned.
the run, rather… because of the error.
