The Official Site of The Atlanta Braves: Official Info: Press Release
Mark Redman! He’s so… Well, he’s pitched in the majors before!
Redman was signed to a minor league deal, but is certainly pencilled into the rotation. The minor league aspect is partly to protect the Braves, but mostly (I’ll guess) so they don’t have to cut someone right now to make room on the 40-man. Player analysis to come.
The one concerning thing to me about Redman is all the teams he’s pitched for – has been with the Twins, Tigers, Marlins, A’s, Pirates, and Royals since 2001. Maybe he really does suck, but he seems to fall in line with the general mold of Braves pitchers over the years.
Well, at least he won’t be Travis Smith or Jason Shiell. I would guess he’ll be more of a… Shane Reynolds. 😉
“During the first month and a half of the season, a starter would be needed on 4/8 (vs. NYM), 4/14 (vs. Fla), 4/19 (vs. ChC), 4/24 (at Fla), 5/1 (vs. Phil), 5/8 (vs SD), and 5/13 (at Pitt).” (from another board)
Why not take a shot at catching lightning in a bottle with Redman?
Hm, that schedule doesn’t seem too threatening.
yeah, it’s not the worst of all possible moves. Still … [sigh]
he’s an All Star for cryin out loud!
hehehehehe.
Bell Curve, this was the best thing the Braves could have done. They didn’t have to give up anyone in a panicky move and they could catch lightning in a bottle. If they don’t, no harm, no foul.
For Kansas City … they had to find someone.
Jeff K,
Heh heh, I said that too on my blog.
We’ll be signing lesser-known middle reliever Method Man next week. Meth and Red, together again!
*watches the joke go WAY over his head* Ooooo, look how high it is…
interested to see what the financial terms were, I wonder if we’ll cut Woodward and keep Sturtze of the roster for his salary
This is a great signing for the Braves. Certainly Redman hasn’t been great, but he is more then adequate as a 4th or 5th starter. His numbers in the national league have also been much better then in the harder hitting AL.
Smart move by JS. (Can’t believe I said that.)
Put this on the wrong thread by accident….Some random Bob Wickman facts I made
Well, Redman was an “All-Star” last season….
I think the case could be made the Mark Redman is the worst All-Star ever selected.
He was 5-4 with a 5.60 ERA when selected to the team. But thanks to the Royals he can always be referred to as “former All-Star pitcher Mark Redman.”
I’m going to expect him to have numbers like he did for the Marlins in 03 –
per Rosenthal…
If he is added to the 40-man roster, Redman would get a $750,000, one-year contract and the chance to earn $500,000 in performance bonuses based on starts.
Also, Mets really struggling….

Ububba, I believe, said Sanchez has been sent home also
Interesting that Redman was an unsigned free agent so far this spring and yet is slated to “start” the game tomorrow. Wonder if he was attending someones camp or just working out on his own. (???)
I bet that Woodward’s $$ is guaranteed and that we’ll cut him to pay Redman. That’ll be the best thing. Diaz, Langy, Wilson, mighty Thor, Aybar, Lil Pena, Pena will be a good bench in my opinion
well if we cut Woodward we show go ahead and do the same with Sturzes.
Redman is a servicable option and if he pulls out some wins and more importantly not lose games then it will be money well spent.
Sturtze $$$ is guaranteed, I dont think Woodward’s is
oh well…if you can’t love the one you want
