I got my BP Annual in the mail today. They left Bob Wickman out of the book. By accident, apparently — he’s in the index.
Open Thread.
UPDATE: They left Horacio out too. Oh, there he is. Wickman still out.

Wickma’s too big to fit in there apparently…
( yes, the lameness oozes out of me on a daily basis)
If anyone cares, Alabama was eliminated today in the SEC Women’s basketball tournament.
Bama went 0-14 in the regular season and lost their first round game by 29. Bama committed 42 turnovers in the loss.
Looks like we’ll have to look online for his stuff, then.
I’m liking Mike Gonzalez more already:
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07061/766231-63.stm
“Look, I’m not going to lie to you, man: I can just taste October, and that’s all I care about. Seriously. That’s the way these veteran guys are making me feel. And you feel it from the top all the way down. I mean, obviously, I’ve been successful closing, but the rush for me is being with this team and having a pretty good chance of getting to the playoffs.”
He paused and raised his voice.
“Playoffs, man!”
Playing for the Pirates will have it’s effects on you….
Gonzalez was wild, but I don’t think that “homerun” hit off of him today would have been anything near a homerun in Turner Field. It looked really weak off the bat.
Springtraining…it’s the time when established veterans (and certainly Gonzalez is one) work on things, get in shape, and generally don’t worry about results just yet (at least not during the first week). Let the Kyle Davies and Kelly Johnson’s of the world prove themselves. I’m not going to worry about Gonzalez.
anyone find a copy of BP in the atlanta area yet? which bookstores should i hit up tomorrow?
John Schuerholz gave a really great interview on the radio. He sounded legitimally satisfied with the team and raved about Wickman, Gonzalez and Soriano. It’s so much different from last year when I remember he sounded tired and not confident.
Playoffs? PLAYOFFS? You want to talk about the playoffs now?!?
Oops… I keep forgetting about that tag…
Seriously, we should be able to accommodate you, Mike. Just be abit more careful where you place your pitches. (And you’re right, Dan, but the wind was blowing hard out to left.)
Great. Last year’s edition had typos in every other sentence, and now they’re leaving people out of the book. Looks like another stellar production.
Can’t wait for my copy to arrive.
Reliever predictions aren’t that accurate anyway, are they?
About the typo thing… yeah that’s true. I don’t care, though. I ordered the thing and I’m getting it.
I don’t really buy it for the PECOTA projections (you can get those anywhere), I buy it for the essays and player analysis. Which is why the typos annoyed me so much. And I’m assuming Wickman wasn’t the only player left out.
That said, it’s still my favorite annual and I love it.
HA! On SportsCenter: “The Pirates lost by 1 in 10 innings, so they’re at mid-season form.” Nice…
how many times does Gonzalez say “man.”
I buy several preview mags too, so I’m more than fortified with the analysis information. And what is there to say about Wickman?
“He won’t pitch as well as he did last season with Atlanta, but he’ll probably rack up 25-35 saves during the season if he doesn’t falter. Atlanta does have two backup plans if Wickman does lose the battle with being older (and fat); not many teams can say that.”
That’s it. 😉
csg, I guess a lot. Every article quoting Gonzalez or every time I see him speak, especially on the local television media here, he says “man”.
Neither McBride nor Gonzo looked great yesterday, but its early in the Spring, so it probably does not mean anything. The impressive thing about our pen is not just the new editions (including the slightly slimmer Wickman) but the fact that we have another group–Boyer, Startup, Santos and Devine who might be ready to help by mid-season.
Hey guys, just got back from disney wwos after hitting the game yesterday. I won’t be repetitive and mention the ins and outs of the games, because I know it was televised. But here were the highlights for me:
1. Ryan Langerhans autograph
2. Bobby Dews autograph
3. After AJ nailed the runner at the plate, some dude decked out in yankees apparel stood up and shouted at the top of his lungs “You’re gonna have fun doing that in pinstripes next year!”
4. During batting practice, frenchy was thrown nothing but pitches that were well outside the zone. He swung at everyone of them. I guess they want him to get used to seeing junk thrown at him, i dunno.
5. John Smoltz throwing Roachy a knuckler, then when requesting a new ball, he brushed him back. they were both smiling big. its nice to see ball players having fun.
I got sunburned horribly too, but to me it was worth it.
Samion,
3. I would wager that he’s an idiot if he meant it. The Yankees have a crowded enough outfield without Andruw.
I haven’t cracked on Bama in awhile.

I seriously need to get a Bobby Dews autograph…
I have an inside source who tells me Damon’s thinking of hanging it up after this year. If he does, or if Cashman thinks his heart’s not in it, couldn’t you see them moving him to someone like the Rockies (if they move Helton to the Red Sox, they’ll be able to take on some short term medium large money for a veteran CF and leadoff guy, and have some middling positional prospects to give back), or even the Brewers if Bill Hall doesn’t work out there this year, and then the Yanks signing Andruw? And given Andruw about to hit the market, makes the Juan Pierre signing look that much more whack to me for LA. Mets, Yanks and Sox are all pretty set at CF for now; White Sox might be able to do it; Cubs blew their wad this year; Houston? Giants? Or Yanks move someone and get him.
I see him going to Boston next year
Horacio’s in the book, pg. 40
Auburn just got absolutely screwed at Ole Miss. Somehow it’s not ruled a shooting foul when our guy gets hacked trying a desperation 3 with :00.7 left, but a non-shooting foul.
Ole Miss wins 81-79.
Bobby says he’s retiring after next year. He said he thinks we can win the World Series this year, and next year, and then “that’s it.” If he’s being serious (and it sounds like he is), then it could mean the little chance we might have had to sign Andruw for a little cheaper might have just disappeared.

I think we have to face it that Smoltz, Andruw, JS, Chipper, and Bobby will soon all be gone
csg,
That’s life. Nothing lasts forever. A similar situation could be with pets. I want all five of my cats whom I love dearly to be here forever, but they won’t.
Sam, that was exactly my point
update from today’s game

csg,
Well, all righty then. I’m ready to face it. 🙂
I still have hope that Smoltz and Chipper are going to be around for another three or four years. Andruw, Schuerholz and Cox are gone soon, I’ll accept that.
I want Smoltz to be around, no doubt. I also want a healthy Chipper to be around for 3 or 4 more years.
David Wells, on Greg Maddux:
“I call him ‘The Silent Scumbag,'” Wells said. “You would perceive him to be Einstein because he’s quiet and he’s always sitting there at his locker with a crossword puzzle. But he’s got a silent sickness to him, sort of like David Cone. Those quiet guys are the ones you have to watch out for.”
By the way, I think Boomer was being affectionate when he said that.
Another good story, with the Braves saying really nice things about Adam LaRoche:
“He’s a great hitter, period,” said Atlanta center fielder Andruw Jones, whose No. 25 LaRoche is wearing with the Pirates in his honor. “He was a big part of our offense. In the second half, when some of us were struggling, he picked us up and carried us on his back.”
“He’s just a great human being,” Langerhans said. “He cares about people, and that’s why he’s going to fit in with any clubhouse.”
“Pittsburgh’s getting a great player, as well as a great guy,” outfielder Jeff Francouer said. “He’s their type of player, all blue-collar, someone who enjoys the game. He’s not going to be real loud, but the Pirates are going to appreciate what he brings them on and off the field.”
Reply from BP:
That link’s broken…
That should work.
Here’s the Wickman entry.
Well, at least they owned up to their mistake. 🙂
Interesting that PECOTA projects Wickman to pitch through 2009.
Apparently, with Bobby threatening retirement, “the pictures” are losing their value and Orr is having to resort to more drastic measures.
It’s gotten ridiculous the way people focus on Spring Training performance. On ESPN, Steve Phillips kept talking about how Dice-K showed “a lot of poise” after giving up a leadoff double in his first start. Uh, IT WAS AGAINST BOSTON COLLEGE! How does this guy keep a job? I guess they have to say something to justify all the air time when nothing is really happening.
