I don’t care. And Horacio, if you’re happy you got through two innings against a bunch of college kids giving up only one run, you’re more delusional than I thought.

Sinced I missed my opportunity to comment on someone’s proposed Horatio Ramirez-Adam LaRoche for Nick Johnson trade, I’ll just try to mini-hijack things.
I think we could actually pull that off. I live in Washington, DC and can tell you that Bowden is nuts. I firmly believe that if we tossed in Brian Jordan that Bowden would think we were “sweetening” the deal.
So Horatio Ramirez-Adam LaRoche-Brian Jordan for Nick Johnson and a ham sandwich.
It even works out about the same financially: HR($2.2 mil, 1 yr deal )+AL($340,000)+BJ($700,000)
vs. NJ($3.2 mil, 1 yr)
I would toss in $100 to make that trade happen, for what it’s worth. So maybe that would do it if Jordan wasn’t enough.
You don’t need to live in DC (though I do, incidentally) to know that Jim Bowden is totally stupid and should not be a GM. There was something floating around on MLB.com saying that the Nationals wanted to trade Soriano to [unprintable city] for David Wells AND have [unprintable team] pick up most of Wells’s salary. There are so many totally moronic things about this I can’t even begin to list them. The fact that Bowden even reportedly asked about this speaks volumes.
But at least he’s running one of our rivals!
At least Ramirez didn’t get bombed. Any confidence-building that he can get is fine by me.
I have Horacio Ramirez in the 2006 Tommy John surgery pool.
The season is starting!!! BOoyah!!!!
I’ve been waiting for tomorrow for a long time.
I don’t think Bowden is as nuts as you guys think. Soriano is holding the team up by being obstinate regarding where he should play. Chipper could teach him a thing or two about what being a “team” is. Nick Johnson is a good player when healthy and that’s a big IF. I think Horacio will be dealt simply because Davies and James might shine and there will be no room for Horam. Keep your fingers crossed.
Don’t compare Soriano’s situation to Chipper’s. Chipper made that move for a team he played for his whole career and has always been supportive of him. He knew he would be taken care of by the team for his actions. Soriano has been traded twice in his ML career and is going into a contract year. Does anyone really believe that if he agreed to switch positions, that the gNats would take care of him? Yeah, me neither. the gNats should have thought of this problem and discussed it with him BEFORE the trade.
I’m not saying some teams wouldn’t look favorably on his willingness to switch, but some would just look at the (probable) lower numbers and he would lose money. He does need to look out for himself to an extent.
Well, Soriano is doing what he said he’d do all along. It’s not like he deceived Bowden. Soriano also made it clear to the Rangers and anybody who wanted to listen that he wasn’t moving to the outfield.
Bowden didn’t even bother trying to get agreement on a position change in place before trading for Soriano, so I put the current situation totally on Bowden’s head. Plus, he traded away the Nats’ best player to do it.
Now, the only resolution is to trade Soriano for 60 cents on the dollar. Nice.
Not to turn this into Nats Chat though. I’m just saying it would be like someone trading for Chipper to play in the outfield or 1B.
Now, the only resolution is to trade Soriano for 60 cents on the dollar.
Except that would be logical, and Bowden is not logical. Instead, he is apparently trying to trade the guy to B***** for $1.60 on the dollar, since he wants them to pick up most of Wells’ contract in addition to Soriano’s silly $10 million.
See, Michael, here’s why I think Bowden is nuts: He traded Brad Wilkerson for Soriano, which, from a purely baseball standpoint, was a terrible trade. And he wanted him to play a different position without even checking if Soriano would do it first. Now, he apparently wants to fix this boneheaded move by trading him to a team that has spent much of the last 3 years trying to get RID of players like Soriano (see Hillenbrand, Shea) and then he expects them to pick up salary, too. I’m betting that conversation lasted about 4 seconds and ended in fits of hysterical laughter.
I read Athlon Sports 2006 Preview today. It wasn’t very good, but it did call Bowden a “wheel-and-deal” GM, which I think is a very apt characterization. He pulls off successions of dumb moves without really analyzing them first. As I said earlier, I’m very glad he’s in charge of a division rival!
Well, Jenny, Bowden has made his name well known since his days with the Reds. So, what he is doing now is hardly surprising.
In response to your question from the previous thread, KC, I think Millwood, Padilla, and Otsuka might make a difference; it’s more that I think Oakland’s gonna have a tough time if Crosby’s injured, and that lineup Texas has over there–especially with Brad Wilkerson–is just monstrous.
Oh, and, um, Jim Bowden sucks.
I’ll still take the Angels in the AL West — pretty good starters, really good relief. I’m sure those new guys will help some, but Texas has a lotta catching up to do before they can pitch with the Halos.
The Angels’ bullpen is lights-out, but their offense looks a little thin to me. Their starters are good but inconsistent–Escobar, Lackey, Weaver, and Colon never seem to be able to put together two good years in a row.
i think pot humor is the apex of comedy.
You been smokin’ something, Mr. Met?
A few fun facts for ya:
In the time since Atlanta joined the NL East in 1994, the Mets record vs. the Braves: 76-113.
In head-to-head competition at Turner Field since its 1997 opening: Mets 19 wins, Atlanta 46.
In the time since Atlanta joined the NL East in 1994, the total amount of games that the Braves have finished ahead of the Mets: 195
Feel free to put in your pipe & smoke…
AAR, I am not quite sure if we can expect Millwood to be dominating like he did last season. Remember his experience with Citizen Bank Park at Philly? Millwood’s career has been very inconsistent: either he is very good or completely awful. In respect of Padilla, I don’t think any team can rely on his health to head a rotation.
However, I do understand your logic behind your prediction. Obviously, the Angels need McPherson, Kotchman, and Mathis to step up. Otherwise, their offense is indeed rather thin as you mentioned.
When I first read the post by that Mets fan, I thought it was Danny Kolb coming back for a visit. Well, they are all the same, they both suck.
KC, I totally agree with you–I don’t expect a lot out of Millwood. But I kind of have a fantasy baseball mancrush on Mark Teixeira, which (I admit) affects my ability to think rationally.
Listened to the last half of the game on local radio today. It sounded like Ascanio was throwing some effortless heat out there. Lots of upper 90’s (topping out at 99) on the gun. He was also mixing in a good change-up, according to the AM960 Homers. Granted, it was against the Diamond Dawgs but I look forward to seeing more of him in the coming years.I’ll be at the game on Sunday v. the Netherlands. If anyone else from this board is heading down I’ll be the guy with glasses in a Braves jersey waving a Dutch flag out on the berm. There shouldn’t be more than three or four of us. Stop by and say howdy.
Are any of the ST games gonig to be on TV?
Here is who is ptiching today, Jorge Sosa, Lance Cormier, Kevin Barry, Macay McBride and Joey Devine
The Rangers don’t actually have that great an offense. It’s mostly park effects. The media bashes them for not having enough pitching, but what they really need is another honest-to-god elite hitter to go along with Teixeira. When they choked in 2004 it wasn’t because they couldn’t pitch, it was because they didn’t hit.
Braves v. Dodgers is on ESPN tomorrow at 1:00 pm. I’ve set it to Tivo so I can watch when I get home.
17 strikes out of 21 and perfect after the leadoff double in his first game since September….it’s not necessary to call the guy delusional for being comfortable with that. Brian McCann is the same age as those UGA players and took Roger Clemens pretty damn deep last year, but Horacio has to dominate those guys? He doesn’t dominate anybody, so it’s unfair to expect that from him, college kids or not.
Cox said in the paper here today that HR has had great controll all spring.
People are picking Texas? Really? That A’s are probably 12 games better than the Rangers. And they are probably 5 games better than the Angels. Seriously sit down and look at that Athletics team. That is a depp, talented rotation thats goes deep into ballgames. The back end of the bullpen is very good. The lineup is pretty damn fine assuming Thomas does NOT stay healthy, if he does it gets even better. The A’s are more better than their division than any other team in baseball(and that doesn’t look like proper grammar at all).
As for the Mets, its hard to take a team seriously that has only 4 SP, 1 of which is capable of falling apart at any time and another of which is 40. Lineups better than ours though, even with the dregs that are LoDuca/Reyes/2B.
Braves vs. Mets on paper
C-McCann vs LoDuca-Push
1B-LaRcohe vs Delgatto- Mets
2B- Giles vs Matsui-Braves
SS- Renteria vs Reyes- Braves
3B- Jones vs Wright- Braves (slightly)
LF- Langy/KJ vs Floyd- Mets
CF Andruw vs Beltran- Braves
RF Francoeur vs Nady- Braves
Braves win 5-2-1
Starting Pitching
Hudson vs Pedro- Mets
Smoltz vs Glavine- Braves
Thomson vs Trachsel- Braves
Sosa vs Zambrano- Braves
HoRam vs Heilman- Braves
Braves win 4-1
Bull Pen- Mets (we don’t know really who will make the team on both sides, based on projections, the Mets pen will be better.)
Mouton,
Yeah, I like the A’s.
Smitty,
You’re right. Although I don’t like the position by position comparisons, the Braves ought to be favored because of their starting pitching.
Starters. Age. Depth.
That’s why I think the Braves take the Division in ’06, though anything can happen.
It’s hard for me to imagine HoRam being better than just about anyone as a starting pitcher – even Heilman. However, I think Pedro’s chances of not making it through the season are slightly greater than Smoltz. It seems like foot/ toe injuries can mes up your mechanics and cause much more significant problems later on.
It’s a real bummer that Pedro’s not pitching for the Dominican in the WBC. That surely would have been good for the Braves.
Smitty, I mostly agree with your assessment, although in the HoRam/Heilman matchup it’s hard to say that either one represents any sort of “advantage”.
Also, McCann is already better than LoDuca. Don’t believe the hype!
Isn’t it kind of sad that a Mets fan has to come to a Braves site to get his/her jollies? I’ve been following the Braves my entire adult life, and have never visited a Mets site. Haven’t needed to 😉
First of all, Jenny dear, its ok to mention that team now, because I just ingnore your posts for the most part anyway, so have at it.
Secondly, I don’t think HoRam and Sosa will both make it through the season in the Braves rotation. Which means we should get an extended look at either James or Davies.
Aw gee, thanks, Justin, you’re too kind. Although if you’re “ingnoring” my posts, how did you know I wasn’t typing *it* out, huh?
In other news, I woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning, which is kind of hard, as my bed is against a wall.
Hey, my predictions are generating controversy! I thought my ballsiest pick was saying the Brewers would finish second.
Tanto, I would say that the Oakland A’s do have another elite hitter: his name is Brad Wilkerson, and as Jenny pointed out a day ago, he’s an upgrade over the guy they got him for. And Mouton, you’re right, Frank Thomas could be a good upgrade for the A’s, although I also expect him to be injured immediately. I was more thinking that if they lose Bobby Crosby, they’re totally screwed–and I really, really don’t like those reports about his sore shoulder. Their pitching is ungodly good, and will only get better, and I’m glad to pick them over the Angels.
The Rangers are just mashers, though. Even if they don’t win the division, they’ll be fun to watch.
You mean the Rangers, right? That’s where Wilkerson is.
—
You really think the A’s pitching is “ungodly good”? We’re talking about Harden/Zito/Blanton/Haren/Misc, right?
Looking at the A’s (88 wins) & Angels (95 wins) last year, their team numbers are remarkably similar.
Oakland: 3.69 ERA/262 BA/330 OBP/407 SLG/737 OPS
LAAoA: 3.68 ERA/270 BA/325 OBP/409 SLG/734 OPS
mr met touched me in a bad place.
this poo tastes funny.
Mr. Met,
Why do you hate yourself so much?
anyway…
What I particularly love about Mets fans is how the Braves losing in postseason is somehow worse than the utter failure of their seasons.
Exactly. You should probably worry about June and July before thinking about October, Mets fans.
Oh, and before I forget, I’m really lame.
Shhh, listen….it’s the sound of dragging knuckles.
Mac, that last NY METS post won’t fool anyone, because the words are spelled properly and the grammar is correct.
It’s kind of fun to think of Dan Kolb–the actual Dan Kolb–spamming Braves sites (using the pseudonym NY METS) as payback for all the abuse heaped upon him last year.
Sounds like a 3D monster movie from the ’50s: Return of The Kolb!
Stats from today’s game:
http://stats.ajc.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=ajc&page=mlb/scores/final/preboxscore.aspx?GameID=17416
Looks like they dropped the ball all over the field.
Yeah, and apparently Cesar Crespo booted a routine play–too bad, that must have hurt his chances to make the team.
doctor, why am i so small down there?
i would type more but mom told me to go out and look for a job.
When I was talking about the Oakland
A’s being “ungodly good,” I was mostly thinking about Rich Harden and Huston Street. But Blanton and Zito aren’t too bad either, neither is Haren, and Saarloos has more potential than HoRam. Top to bottom, I think I’d rather have their rotation than the Angels’, just because the Angels have so many headcases.
Boy, he sure showed us, huh? I didn’t know Oscar Wilde was a Mets fan.
That’s not really a fair attack. He was happy with his performance, outside or who he was facing. As in, he was happy with his location and how he felt.
Getting back to the original trade idea: Nick Johnson?..for Laroche & Ramirez? Why we wanna help the Nats out like that? I wouldn’t have Johnson for either Laroche or Ramirez, straight up. Career underachiever, Johnson….really a shame about Soriano, why’d they even want him with Vidro already there?
Chopdawg
i am such a loser that my email address includes “DJCOOLBREEZ” if you can imagine such a thing!
At least I don’t use AOL, Met-boy.
“Knuckle-dragging,” as in lower form of human, the kind who doesn’t have the good sense to:
a) come out of the rain,
b) wipe his own ass,
c) leave a place where his presence is considered as welcome as a dip in the Gowanus Canal.
I wouldn’t have Johnson for either Laroche or Ramirez, straight up. Career underachiever, Johnson…
All due respect dude, but I’d take 450 AB’s of .289/.408/.479, 139 OPS+ at 1b all day long. Laroche will only see numbers like that by looking at someone else’s stats. We could use underachievement like that at about 7 positions.
Johnson’s not really a career underachiever; he’s a careerlong wrist injury.
Deleted but remembered. Wow, is this guy talented. Danny couldn’t misspell better.
Heh. You’re proving the Mets stereotype right: Loser from beginning to end.
Also, it’s great that you get paid well to do something you love. Assuming your Mets love losing–and how could they do something so well for so long without loving it?–they can say the same thing about themselves.
YOU GUYS ARE GREAT! isn’t this fun? in all honesty im just doing this all in good fun. I hope no one catches any feelings I just wanted to get a rise out of all you .All in all yes over the years you have beaten the mets no doubt. But this year it ends. We are clearly a better team. I would like to place a friendly bet with all you the mets will have a better record then the braves by the end of this season . And oh yes I will be in here to gloat, you better believe it!
cheers
Dan
