I was getting annoyed with all the criticism of Matsui before. I thought people were crazy for saying he was a bust. But that guy, no matter how solid the hitting numbers, finds a way to botch games and key situations on an almost regular basis. Matsui’s good, but for the effort and money it took to bring from Japan, I don’t think he was worth it.

What is the National League record for double plays in a season by one team? We have to be chuggin’ towards it at this pace…

No joke. The defensive play bodes well for this new staff.
(I swear I am not making this story up.) The other night, I was lying in bed wondering how the Braves would do this year. Somehow my mind wandered to Andres Thomas, possibly my dad’s least favorite player of all time. I remember thinking before I went to bed that there was no way he was as bad as I remembered thinking him to be at the time; I was afraid that I would learn he was actually underappreciated, and did the little things that sabermetricians appreciate, if I took the time to look him up on B-Ref.
Of course, I never got around to looking back at his numbers until just now. Yuck. My dad was sure right about him.
During Thomas’ six-year career, the Braves — who had been a good team in the previous few seasons — finished last four times and fifth twice. Since they got rid of him — it was like the first thing Bobby did when he took over again as manager — they’ve won every division title. Coincidence?!?!?!?

And who replaced Thomas? The great slugger R Belliard of course. Amazing what a little defense at the shortstop position will do. I also remember something about FC Stadium having the worst infield in the league and that was addressed by Cox as well.

Thanks for the information guys. I became a fan at age 9 in 1990 so I don’t have any memories of him. I occassionally hear our broadcasters refer to him and was really wondering who he was. You guys filled in the blanks nicely. Thanks. I like your anecdote too Kyle S, my father and I have similar experiences with players I think he’s too hard on.

I became a fan during the reign of Raphael the 1st.
Ramirez that is (.261/.295/.342; FP .953). My dad was hard on him too, though I think unfairly so.

Wow, you guys are makin’ me feel old. I became a fan in the glorious season of 1974, at the ade of ten. Now, where’d I put my cane?

Refresh me on Andres Thomas, if you could Mac.
.234/.255/.334 career hitter, .958 career fielding percentage.

These palsied hands, don’tcha know…
Ramirez wasn’t very good, but next to Thomas he was practically Honus Wagner.
My first pro baseball memory is watching the Mets and Braves in the ’69 playoffs on TV in class. I’ve been a fan ever since.
