The time off doesn’t seem to have put any rust on the Doubles Machine. Marcus Giles flew out in his first AB, but doubled in a run each of the next two times, eventually scoring himself. Chipper drove him in one of those times, and had a three-hit game; Charles Thomas had two hits and a walk. Every regular reached base at least once. All in all, another fine offensive performance against Livan Hernandez, who always deserves it.
Jaret Wright had a fine start, going seven and allowing three hits and three walks, striking out five. As noted in the comments, he seems to be particularly tough to hit at night. Gryboski and Alfonseca finished it.
Nick Green got in the game late at third base after running for Chipper; he scored the last run of the game. Eddie Perez drove him in after entering the game for Estrada, who was hit by a pitch. I don’t know about Estrada’s availability.
The Phillies and Mets are tied at two and are in the bottom of the tenth. If the Mets pull it out, the Braves will be in a first place tie… John Thomson pitches for the Braves tomorrow against Tony Armas.
Now I can say it for all the world to hear. THE BRAVES ARE IN 1ST PLACE! Sounds familiar, huh? Get used to it, ’cause it’s gonna be repeated a lot before the season is over.
More good news: according to an ESPN story, Dewayne Wise was activated… and optioned to Richmond.
