In a few hours, we’ll have another game against these guys, and hopefully we brought our brooms.

The Colorado Rockies are 4-25, pretty inarguably the worst team in major league baseball. They haven’t made the playoffs since 2018, which was their fifth Wild Card appearance in their first 32 seasons of existence; like the Marlins, they have literally never finished first in their division.

Owner Dick Monfort has been in the ownership group since baseball expanded to Colorado, but he became the lead owner a few years later, and he’s more or less been flying solo for the past decade and a half. He’s both meddlesome and cheap and the team will never be successful until he sells.

Which worked out for us pretty well on Monday and Tuesday! Cliff’s recap of Monday night’s game was swallowed by WordPress, but Bryce Elder overcame a three-run homer to deliver a Quality Start — his second in a row and fifth since the beginning of 2024 — and the Braves scored six runs on 14 hits as every lineup spot got at least one knock.

Last night was similar but better. A.J. Smith-Shawver twirled a terrific game in his first start since April 12, though he had to come out of the game after taking a liner off his arm. He claimed that he wasn’t feeling too bad, so we’ll see how much time he needs to miss.

Meanwhile, our offense got another 14 hits. (It’s the first time we’ve gotten back-to-back games with at least 14 hits since August 28-29, 2023, also in Colorado.) Astonishingly, none of the 28 hits was a home run; there were six doubles, a triple, and 21 singles, along with four walks and just nine strikeouts.

I’d call that a good start!
