Between two hopeless choices, I’m leaning Mets, actually. They’ve suffered a lot over the past decade and I don’t mind seeing them win a little bit. I despise the Phillies and they way that team and fanbase is so cocky about the way they play in October, despite having no ring to show for it.
It’s only a best-of-5 series… and somebody’s gotta lose.
My Best-Case: The winner faceplants vs. a Cali club in NLCS.

I live in Philly market. I went into this thinking I hated the Mets more. But I guess due to the proximity, I found my heart pulling against the Phillies more.
You’re right about the arrogance of their fanbase. And booing Nimmo when he took a minute after having the wind knocked out of him? Classless!
All fanbase have jerks. Philadelphia sports fans seems to take pride in being classless.
And maybe if I lived elsewhere, I’d feel differently. But there it is.
Considering that Philly’s NL baseball franchise has exactly 2 titles since its 1883 inception, the classlessness might seem to cloak the real issue (self-loathing).
Mets fans are more like Auburn football fans — always the little brother, always punching up, yet grimly realizing (but rarely admitting) their place in the market. Thankfully, some of them have a great sense of humor.

The funny thing is, this Mets team feels to me objectively easier to root for, the whole “OMG” thing is a fun story. Even though both teams have $300 million shortstops, the Mets are clear underdogs, outperforming their talent level, and the Phillies are the best team Dave Dombrowski can buy.
In reality both are supremely expensive major market teams and I don’t really care that much who whales on the other more, as long as neither of them wins the pennant or the championship. But these Mets are more fun to root for.

My fondest wish was for every team to lose all its home games. This is my standard posture when I hate both teams.

I’m having a hard time rooting for the Dodgers or Yankees. Go Padres?

It’s weird not having a National League team I particularly care to root for, but I’m inclined to prefer the team that’s never won it. I find myself a lot more naturally drawn to the AL teams – for Cleveland to get off the 75-year schneid, the how in the hell are THESE GUYS still playing? of the Tigers, the possibility of the Royals to knock off the Bombers. Lot more fun teams to root for over in the Junior Circuit just now, IMO.

I think the Guardians winning it will damage their underdog identity. Red Sox and Cubs are nothing special now. Being plucky used to be their thing, man.
Embrace your suffering, Cleveland!!!
Padres story is nice because their owner tried really hard to build a winner. It’s a shame he won’t ever see his team win.
