Noted baseball writer and Internet blogger Blaise Pascal memorably noted in one of his recaps “Je n’ai fait celle-ci plus longue que parce que je n’ai pas eu le loisir de la faire plus courte.” As you all know, I have the opposite problem. Apologies in advance for my keeping this brief. Personal issues have intervened.
The Braves faced the Nationals in the second game of the series on the Anacostia River. a few blocks northeast of its confluence with the Potomac. (It always bothers me that the baseball usage of the word confluence is only used in Pittsburgh.) The Natinals (which is what the City Connect jerseys would have had on the front if anybody in DC had a sense of humor [not counting AAR]} were held hitless by Chris Sale through 3 innings, but then scored two in the fourth aided by a throwing error from Sean Murphy on a double steal. That was Sale’s only blemish through seven innings. 10 strikouts and one walk. Boy, is he fun to watch. As is Fried. As is Lopez,
Eight of the nine guys in the top of the inning, however, are not fun to watch. We still assume there’s going to be some offensive fun this season, but so far the Braves offense requires the following trigger warning: “The scenes you are about to see may be extremely disturbing to those who understand the point of baseball.” The one run that did score was by virtue of a fly ball that, like most fly balls, went into the sky, but, unlike most fly balls, was not seen by the outfielders. I shouldn’t complain. It was a lot more hits than they got in Fenway on Thursday.
Not Really Politics
Seeing the Nats in their City Connect uniforms with the cherry blossoms always makes me think of the Tidal Basin, which then causes me to think of Fanne Foxe, the Argentinian stripper (unrelated to Jimmie Foxx) who tried to escape being caught in a car with the very drunk Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee by the Park Police by means of fecklessly diving into said body of water. Politicians dabbling with porn stars and strippers will always be with us, but it makes me nostalgic to think that there were once powerful members of the House of Representatives. I miss it.
Update: This will serve as the game thread
(This part is by AAR.)
In the spirit of putting forward roughly the same effort as our heroic boys did last night, I’m getting up the update to this thread to make it today’s game thread a half hour late and a dollar short. Will today be Bad Charlie or Good Charlie? Will the offense make it a distinction with a difference?
Let’s find out!

@stampton
Here’s Sean Murphy’s offensive and defensive rankings in 2023. I trust Statcast’s data over any other metric.
IMG_8868
Note that Murphy was in the 82nd percentile in CS Above Average last year (tied for the 11th-best mark in MLB) so the assertion from the game thread that he can’t throw isn’t supported by the metrics.
With regard to Murphy’s offense, he’s only had 29 PAs this year, almost all of which have come after his 2-month stint on the IL. It’s probably going to take him a while to find his groove.
Fannie Foxe and Wilbur Mills! What a memory—those were the days! I’m halfway serious; there are some things about that political era that I miss.
As my generation is not in a position to miss it, exactly, I’ll just remain thankful that we continue to be in an era where the New York Mets remain the New York Mets. All the structural integrity of Soviet meatloaf, and twice the resilience.
Best wishes, Jonathan.
Good job, good effort, Charlie.
So it’s going to be like that Charlie? It’s not early.anymore. When can we officially hit the panic button? Seriously, those two rubs are probably going to be enough
It would be nice if Arcia would stop hitting 5th or 6th in the order so that when the bases are loaded he isn’t the one due up.
Y’all figured it out, but this is gonna be the game thread.

Nitkowski has now joined the dead ball conspiracy theorists.
I see CJ Abrams scoring Senzel from third and have to wonder if the Braves this year have ever or will ever score a guy from third with two outs. We wasted bases loaded and two outs in the first and the gNats scored three runs. And Charlie has already lost several hitters with two strikes. This is the worst I’ve seen the Braves play since the 80s.
I think having Riley hit second is a huge mistake. Snit oughtta install Harris at leadoff and keep Albies at second followed by Ozuna, Olson and Riley. That might generate more OBP at the top and push Arcia down a bit. We need more guys on base and more protection for Olson
Of course the ump has been extremely generous to the gNats on strike calls.
Hurston Waldrep is starting tomorrow. AA is doing all he can to keep our starters on 5 days rest or more short of just calling it a 6 man rotation.
Also , Jimmy Herget went to the IL and Daysbel Hernandez was the corresponding move. He may only be here today though, since they will have to make room for Waldrep.
I think Ozzie or Kelenic are better leadoff options than Harris right now. Harris and his sub .300 OBP should remain in the bottom 3rd of the order until he figures it out.
Harris would be better able to figure it out from leadoff. Albies is a terrible choice for leadoff but I’d be OK with Kelenic. I see another guy left on 3rd with two outs. Riley just missed a double but he missed it; Abrams did not.
I think Harris will be better able to learn to cut down on his swing for OBP. Harris is probably better against lefties than Kelenic.
Why do the gNats lose to everyone but the Braves? Even if Waldrep is perfect, the Braves don’t win unless they score.
P.S. Another two-strike two-out hit to score a run for the gNats.
Ozzie has the 2nd highest OBP in the lineup, only behind Ozuna.
I don’t want a guy hitting .246/292/354 hitting leadoff.
That will change. Guys need to be put in a situation where they can succeed. That is why Ozzie should hit second not first. The lineup needs to be shaken up. Riley should be hitting third, Ozuna fifth but I could see vice versa. Duvall needs to be platooned (with Martinez or Wall or someone). Kelenic should be full time but hit ninth like the original plan. Murphy will heat up and should be higher in the lineup. If Harris hits first then maybe Arcia should be ninth and Kelenic eighth.
Look at the gNats avgs. They hit no one but the Braves.
Bad News Braves this inning…
Eddie Rosario in particular is killing us this year. Doesn’t look like he can get a hit against anyone else.
Nice two strike approach by Harris. Big hit early on.
Brutal.
Ehh, we don’t win the WS in 2021 without him going nuclear on the dodgers. He can whup us all he wants.
Edit: reply fail, obviously talking about rosario
Disastrous as this game has been, the Braves have scored in three straight innings, which I’d venture to guess they haven’t done in weeks. JonathanF, would you have a chance to check on that?
I don’t have the right tools to look at this year’s box scores, but I just watched the Belmont being won by Dornoch, co-owned by Jayson Werth who now looks like Jared Leto
Dylan Lee has a 2.3 ERA and it feels like 23.3.
Well, if you were looking for things the 2024 Braves suck at, that game really touched ’em all.
To paraphrase D.C. native and one of my all-time favorites, Tony Kornheiser:
“This offense STINKS!”
Exit velocity and dead ball theories don’t mean a thing when you can’t even hit the ball.
Agreed. If this is 5 years ago we would just be terrible offensively, not unlucky due to barrel rate or exit velocity.
I knew I should have picked up Herz today because I am sure he will look like an ace today against our impatient offense
The Millionaire on the mound today—very good to get him a lead.

Game thread now up.
