“Bravda,” from the Russian word “Pravda,” meaning “truth.”
Matt Olson‘s 52nd homer of the season in the 6th inning broke Andruw Jones‘s single season Braves record, and Ozzie Albies and Austin Riley hit back to back homers as the Braves posted yet another multiple run first inning. Ozzie’s homer was his 30th of the season, joining Olson, Riley, Ronald Acuna Jr. and Marcell Ozuna with at least 30 home runs. No team in MLB history has had more players with 30 homers in the same season than the 2023 Braves.
In addition to his Major League leading homer total, Olson extended his MLB leading RBI total to 129. Michael Harris II went 3 – 5, including his 18th homer of the season, ably manning the leadoff spot while MVP candidate Acuna rests a calf injury for a final push to add to his Major League leading totals in Runs Scored, Hits, and Stolen Bases.
Jackson Stephens threw 3 scoreless innings, and A.J. Minter struck out the side in the 7th. Kirby Yates and Michael Tonkin contributed 2 more strikeouts in the 8th. Braves pitchers stranded 9 Marlins in total.
The Braves will look to add to their Major League leading 96 wins on Sunday at 1:40 Eastern; Charlie Morton and Jesus Luzardo scheduled. Charlie comes into the game 5th in the National League in ERA, at 3.42.
Transaction of the Day AA
- Optioned: Jared Shuster
- Selected: Dereck Rodriguez
- Transferred to the 60-day IL: Dylan Lee
Not a transaction that’s fun to type out. With Brad Hand turning into a pumpkin just in time for October, left-handed relief is slim pickens as there’s no real options on the 40-man and very few in the system. I’m guessing Adam Kolarek could get a look.
Braves Sunday Lineup
- Ozzie Albies
- Austin Riley
- Matt Olson
- Marcell Ozuna
- Travis D’Arnaud
- Michael Harris II
- Orlando Arcia
- Eddie Rosario
- Kevin Pillar
Charlie Morton takes the mound and Ronald Acuna Jr. gets another day to recover.
Jackson Stephens’ performance today was pretty cool to see. Sure, he walked a couple of guys and had a little traffic on the base paths, but three innings of scoreless relief with four Ks? I’ll take that any day of the week. His stuff isn’t exactly electric, but he’s got a few pitches to work with, and did a really nice job locating his sinker. Threw a few backdoor sinkers that just froze some of the Marlins’ righties.
Does Jackson have an outside chance at making the postseason roster? With a few more solid outings, it might be possible. Either way, he’s got a great story and I’m just happy to see him back in big league action this year.
Some good people are going to have a chance to get some rings this season.
Well done, Comrade Rusty.
Don’t get a reason to do many Bravda’s anymore, thank goodness.
This was a classic of the genre
I can remember when the most positive thing you could say about a Braves game was that nobody spiked themself. Had to do a bit of cherry picking around Saturday’s pitching though.
PURE EVIL.
This has been a string full of stinkers.
Falcons playing watchable football anyway
Chisholm seems to feel pretty good about the Marlins chances to pull within 18 and a half.
Blech.
On the one hand, Jazz Chisholm is a five-tool player and it would be good for baseball for him to become a superstar at least on the degree of Hanley Ramirez and Josh Beckett.
On the other hand, I think we can say the Braves’ strategy of lulling the Marlins into a false sense of self-confidence by loading the bases and giving up a bunch of grand slams is working a little too well.
The one good thing about this game is Fun Police will get to have a new favorite reliever.
Falcons overcome a 12-point 4th quarter deficit to beat a pretty good Packers team. That’s not supposed to happen. Glad I watched that game instead of this bed crapping. Get it all out of your system Bravos.
Recapped…without a whole lot of gusto: https://bravesjournal.com/2023/09/17/there-was-a-baseball-game-it-didnt-go-well-from-what-im-told/ (I, as well, watched the Falcons game instead of this debacle…with the thought of catching up with the baseball game later, but yeah, not gonna be rewatching a 16-2 loss)
