Come on, come on, come on Kitty
Tell us about the teams from New YorK City
Come on, come on, come on Kitty,
Tell us about the teams from New York City
They’re kind of bad,
And, it’s kind of sad,
Some day I hope they’re good again.
And the Braves beat
them on their seat
And the difference in the play assured defeat.
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Wee, I wish I didn’t have to see
That Braves beat down
On our wonderful town.
Ooh Wah Ooh Wah cool, cool Kitty
Tell us about the teams from New York City.
Charlie Morton’s fine
And so sublime
He has the finest curveball I’ve ever seen drop down.
Eddie Rosario
Made that gopher ball go
and he drove in old Marcel O
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Wee,
I wish I didn’t see
The swings that missed
and fans that hissed.
Every time they say they’ll be good
We listen and expect the best
And then they get their tails whipped
And rage fills the Alley and Avenue.
Ooh Wah, Ooh Wah, cool cool Kitty
Tell us about the teams from New YorK City
Well, they got thirteen,
With Braves 57 teen.
So both of us are now enjoying old last place.
These Braves are great
And our teams are too late
And the pennantI is these Braves to take.
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Wee,
We both just came to see
That they’re the most
From Coast to Coast.
It was nice to see Morton rely a little less on his four-seamer, which is a pitch that had gotten him into some trouble in previous starts. Last night he only threw 10 four-seamers while mixing in 16 cutters, 18 sinkers, 6 changeups, and 44 curveballs. He had a total of 15 whiffs, 12 of which came on the curve. Great outing for Chuck.
Cliff: there’s no team in Manhattan any more. The Manhattan Transfer to San Francisco was in 1958.
Still, though, while everyone is talking about the epic collapse of the Yankees, they’re still only one game below .500. My credentials as a Yankee-hater are unimpeachable, especially for someone who lives 15 miles from Yankee Stadium, but we got them when they were down this season, particularly since Judge, while technically back, is not Judge… yet.
The LOLMets are another story. They are not only down and out for the moment, but the road back appears bleak, even with near-infinite resources to spend. Do I take joy in this? Only a bit.
Right, when Judge was in the lineup earlier in the year (and doing what he usually does), they at least had the threat of a rally. With Judge, Cole & the good bullpen, they were a WC team.
But, the freefall for this already precarious collection began in early June when Judge busted up his toe against the RF fence in Dodger Stadium. Judge is still not sound. Just watch him try to run.
And if you really wanna see a rapid decline in action, check out Stanton…
But hey… kick ’em while they’re down & move on. It’s not a franchise anyone should ever feel sorry for.
The Mets? An almost unending source of amusement for Braves fans (especially those of us in the NE). Each generation bestows its gifts to us.
What has happened to Stanton is just sad. He was drafted two picks ahead of Freddie. I still remember all the minor league arguments about who would be better, him or Heyward. Right now, he’s less dangerous than his former outfieldmate Ozuna.
AAR, you will not get me to feel sorry for anyone who will earn over a quarter of a billion dollars playing baseball. It is not sad. Not at all.
Is it sad for Yankees fans? Nope. They were gleeful when the “won” the rights to put Stanton in pinstripes. This was the price they had to pay, and they were happy.
Is it sad for Yankees management? (1) No. They were free not to make this deal; (2) Even if they are sad, I do not care.
For the next 4 seasons, Stanton is owed $118 M. (FWIW, the Marlins have to cough up about $10 M each year that’s left.)
That’s for a guy with apparently diminishing skills who’s always hurt anyway.
In the end, his deal will probably be considered in the Pujols/Cabrera territory for “really bad contracts for former MVPs.”
It was an earlier time, so you probably have to triple it to put in today’s terms, but Mo Vaughn’s 6 year $80MM deal with Anaheim, and the Mets subsequently trading for the remainder of that contract (he only played 4 before retiring and sticking the Mets for the last two years) has to be included in that list as well.
And, somehow, the Rendon deal is worse than all of ’em combined.
I’m not really sad for Stanton himself per se – he’s doing alright for himself, all things considered. I’m sad for myself as a baseball fan, though. Unless the guy is a total jerk and I’m not sorry to see him wash out of the league, watching a wonderful player turn into a shell of his former self in very rapid order is sad for me as a fan of the game.
That’s a fair point Alex. It reminds me of the AE Housman poem I had to memorize in 6th grade. https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/46452/to-an-athlete-dying-young Particularly the fifth stanza:
Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.
(Where is blazon when you need him?)
