If you haven’t been paying attention to the trend in the first 3 installments of this series, the Braves farm system from AAA to High-A, all started awfully and are in the process of rebounding and moving toward winning records. The Augusta Greenjackets, unfortunately (and fortunately) are not immune to this trend. On April 30th, the Greenjackets were 7-12 for the season, largely due to a very poor offense. However, May brought the flowers to Augusta and the team has went on a 12-8 run to move to 1 game below .500. While the offense still looks pretty rough, there are several that are in the process of turning their season around. And while it might not be the players that we thought we’d see leading the team, several pitchers are putting up elite numbers early on and might be looking at a promotion to Rome very soon.
August GreenJackets Players of the Month: Hitters
- Ethan Workinger: 144 PAs, .794 OPS, 7 2B, 3 3B, 5 HRs
- David McCabe: 156 PAs, .775 OPS, 5 2B, 1 3B, 5 HRs
- Justin Janas: 132 PAs, .774 OPS, 7 2B, 1HR
Breakdown
21 y/o Workinger signed as an undrafted free agent in 2021 and has gotten better every year while advancing levels. He can play all 3 OF positions, but doesn’t really move the needle in terms of MLB potential.
23 y/o McCabe was last year’s 4th round draft pick and he started out blazing hot. However, he’s cooled down and I’m sure that’s not something that the org wanted to see, especially in Low-A ball from a 23 year old.
22 y/o Janas was last year’s 12th round pick and, thus far, has been an unconventional 1B prospect, as he’s less power and more hit tool. His remarkable eye has been touted for years, even before pro ball, but his .381 SLG, which is actually lower than his .394 OBP, is something he’ll likely have to raise if he wants to make the show.
Augusta GreenJackets Players of the Month: Pitchers

- Cedric De Grandpre: 6 G, 4GS, 26.2 IP, 1.69 ERA, 33K, 7BB, 0.94 WHIP
- Jorge Bautista: 6G, 2GS, 25 IP, 2.88 ERA, 13BB, 32K, 1.24 WHIP
- Owen Murphy: 6G, 6GS, 22.1 IP, 2.82 ERA, 29K, 7BB, 1.21 WHIP
- Seth Keller: 6G, 2GS, 23 IP, 1.17 ERA, 22K, 3BB, 0.74 WHIP
- Spencer Schwellenbach: 7G, 7GS, 20.2 IP, 1.74 ERA, 16K, 8BB, 1.21 WHIP
- Tyree Thompson: 8G, 13.2 IP, 2.63 ERA, 13K, 6BB, 0.73 WHIP
Breakdown
22 y/o Bautista is an international draftee from 2018 and made his way stateside in 2021. It looks like the org is transitioning him to relief which likely doesn’t bode well for his chance to get to the bigs.
21 y/o, Grandpre was drafted last year in the 13th round, is lighting up Low-A with his 95MPH+ fastball and could be next in line for a promotion to Rome. If he’s not on your radar yet, put him on it.
19 y/o Owen Murphy is last year’s 1st round pick and is carrying a phenomenal 2.8 BB/9 and 11.7 K/9. He might be the real deal.
18 y/o Seth Keller could end up being a real find for the Braves. Drafted in the 6th round in 2022, Keller is already hitting 95-96 and is being developed as a starter.
22 y/o (nearly 23) Spencer Schwellenbach was the 2nd round pick in 2021 and almost immediately had Tommy John surgery (2021). Now, he’s finally healthy and will likely be headed to Rome sooner rather than later.
26 y/o Tyree Thompson was originally drafted by the Rangers but was let loose this past offseason. While I’d like to say more, he was a 26th round pick 7 years ago and is on the Braves High-A team so I’m not expecting this relationship to go much further.
