It’s time to love to hate, Braves Journalers! It’s our Braves vs. Mets Series preview! Tonight’s game will begin at 7:10 EST and will feature a pitching matchup of Max Fried vs. David Peterson. Since coming off the IL, Fried has been dominant, pitching 11.2 innings of no run baseball while only allowing 7 hits and 3 walks to go along with 9Ks. For his career, Fried has held the Mets team in check, posting a 2.78 career ERA in 97 innings, which is the largest inning sample Fried has had against 1 team.
LHP David Peterson established himself as a starter last year and carried strong results, pitching 105.2 innings of 3.83 ERA baseball. Now, multiply that 3.83 by 2 and you’ll essentially get is 2023 ERA. Fangraphs believes the ERA is a fluke and will normalize back to his previous year’s numbers, but I’d like to see more of what he’s been so far…at least for one more day.
Matchups for Rest of Series
- Game 2: Spencer Strider vs. Tylor McGill
- Game 3: Charlie Morton vs. Jose Butto
- Game 4: Bryce Elder vs. TBD
Whether to Whether the Storm
Tonight’s game, if they get it in, will be a wet one as there’s an 80+% chance of rain and not the kind you dance in. Tomorrow…it gets worse: 94%. Surely it’s not worse on Sunday, right? Wrong. 97%. Luckily there’s not much rain in the forecast on Monday and Monday sure does sound like a good day for a Quadruple Header.
Transaction a Day AA
Alex Anthopoulos…always good value, gives us another day of transactions and it’s one to get excited about!
Michael Harris II returns to man the CF position and there was much rejoicing. However, one does have to consider what happens to left field, especially considering the play of Sam Hilliard in MHII’s absence. My guess is he starts in LF against RHP and Pillar starts against LHP with Eddie Rosario and Marcell Ozuna splitting DH ABs. However, this thought really gets murky when Travis D’Arnaud comes back and that should lead to an interesting decision.
Braves Lineup
A Fantastic Piece on Spencer Strider

We all know how special Spencer Strider is on the mound, but it’s between the ears that makes him that way and this piece really lets you see the mindset of who many think is the most dominant starting pitcher in the game. Read the piece here.
Thanks for reading. In case you missed it, check out Clint Manry’s piece on some Gwinnett Relievers to keep an eye on!
Dang this rain because, looking at this series, I really loved these pitching match-ups.
I’m guessing that they’ll do everything they can do get tonight’s game in — it’s just sprinkling now w/ heavier stuff supposedly to come. Let’s see if there’s a direct hit on Flushing or not.
And yes, I’m guessing that Monday’s matinee will end up being a doubleheader with perhaps another DH when the Braves visit for a wknd series in August.
Nice piece of hitting by Vaughn.
Nice piece of hitting by Olson.
Olson’s hit was the definition of a bo doubter. I had the game on in the background silent, and just from where the pitch was and his swing i knew it was gone.
Looks like we might get a break in the rain if we wait until 2:00 am. 2:00 am Sunday.
Edit: Looks like they saw this post.
That Strider piece shows how lucky we are. Enjoy it while we can 🙂
Ryan, thanks for posting the Spencer Strider article. It may be the best article about pitching that I’ve ever read.
Man I’m glad we got this game in. The lads can have a rest the next two days by the looks of things.
