Our 2020 Atlanta Braves are doing something that we’ve wanted them to do for years, but they likely didn’t have the talent for it. It truly looks like they are going for it. With a payroll that has reached record highs for the franchise and a team budding with top-end talent in the Minor Leagues, is 2020 going to be THE year? I sure hope so.

2020 Atlanta Braves Spring Training Non-Roster Invitees
2020 Atlanta Braves Roster Thoughts
If you read the 40 names on the 2020 Atlanta Braves 40-man, you’ll notice something different than in the past: there are no throwaway players. Rafael Ortega and John Ryan Murphy were the players in 2019 that if they were DFA’d and claimed by another team, both organization and fanbase would likely be happy that they get another opportunity to play baseball at its highest level.
In 2020, the DFA pecking order, should one of the NRI’s need a spot on the roster, looks to be Chad Sobotka, Jacob Webb, Jeremy Walker, and Phil Pfeifer. However, none of those are throwaway talents and have some value in a trade. While most of the NRI’s don’t have a chance to crack the Opening Day squad, Felix Hernandez, Charlie Culberson, and, to a lesser extent, Chris Nunn could very well need a spot and that could be a real problem if Anthopoulos doesn’t clear room beforehand.
Restocking the Farm from the 40-Man
Most of the 40-man roster needs to be accessible to a general manager and the Braves have players on the current 40-man that are likely a full year away from the Major Leagues: Jasseel De La Cruz, William Contreras, and Huascar Ynoa. While they’re valuable assets that needed to be protected, they likely provide no 2020 value and they could best serve the team’s purpose by being traded for players that aren’t bound to the 40-man roster. The farm is getting top heavy and the Braves have lost 1 of their top 3 picks in this year’s draft. The International Free Agent sanctions are still there for the 2020 signing period and the Braves have already lost 1MM of their IFA pool, a pool that had already been cut in half, due to the signings of Will Smith and Josh Donaldson.
Minor Leaguers for Minor Leaguers are rare trades, but once in a while teams that can house 40-man players will agree to deal lower-level prospects for a chance at a player that could make a big league impact quicker (the Marlins just did that with a few trades). Or the other solution could be to just package the aforementioned players together in a trade for an impact Major Leaguer. Regardless of how it’s done, there’s a big need for 40-man space and I think we see at least one decent-sized deal before the end of Spring Training.

This seems like a good thread in which to re-link to my Braves payroll spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1auJaHME_enCTHWnMHj7g-dJKCkR-OVmqFSgtUBbTP6E/edit#gid=466162828
Stu, that is a great resource and I’d love it if you’d write some roster updates for us in the future. While I like doing it, I think the blog would value your voice as it’s another steady presence these past 2 decades.
Adding to this, if any of you are interested in writing pieces and would like to join our Braves Journal Group me, shoot me an email.
With the increase in roster size to 26 has there been any discussion about increasing the 40 man roster to 41 or 42? It seems like that should at least be a conversation.
@3
I have not seen that, nor do I expect it.
Ryan,
I agree that the FO OUGHT to be looking for a trade as you describe, and I BELIEVE that they are trying to implement such a trade. However, that is a tough trade to make. So I don’t think I would say I EXPECT there to be such a trade.
Another way to clear that is by a trade with one good player and 2 more off of the B list for something of Major League need. However, I don’t see a Major League need unless there is an injury.
We have a new logo, guys! There could be some tinkering with it, but we went simple this time. The old logo isn’t gone, but we are just running through some things. Thoughts?
I like them both, but as Mac was near and dear to my heart, the new one is better
Agreed.
Hear, hear.
Love the new logo. It’s fitting that Mac is at the center. He’s still the heart of this blog.
What they said
The new logo is really nice. Great job. Perfect.
I like it too.
Love the new logo.
With apologies to blazon, William Shakespeare, and Gwen Warren who made me memorize Sonnet 116 in 6th grade, which I can still recite when properly inebriated:
BLAZON’S LAMENT
Let me not for the construction of orders
Use Sabermetrics. Runs do not stem
From soulless brains of data hoarders
But from grit and clutch and no choke phlegm.
Oh no! I’ll use my own two peepers
To predict old Dansbo’s next big hit
I need no blasted Houston beepers
Or worse, more computers! Screw that shit.
Baseball’s not data though bits and bytes
Inevitably corrupt this blog
It’s moral fiber displayed through flights
Of horsehides flying through Truist’s smog
If this be error that is reckoned.
Then Posey’s standing safe at second.
Hey all! Trying to figure out recappers for the season. Let me know if you were a recapped last year and want to continue for the 2020 season. Email is cothrjr at gmail dot com

‘I well might love thy number’s sleepy score
if not needs bless my worldly peepers more.’
Your travels must have inspired you. Viva!
JohnathanF, masterful work, hilarious and stays true to the original rhythm. Absolute tour de force.
Logo looks fantastic as well.
Bravo JonathanF. In 6th grade Ogden Nash was probably the limit of what my mind could handle.
The new logo rules! Long live the new logo!

Shall i compare thee to a ball in play
you’ll surely study in the aggregate?
accumulate detritus as you may
ignoring subtle factors i must contemplate.
sometime too hot the ball will reach a glove
quite frozen by the fear of retribute
which I will analyze with tender love
thou cruelly notch another miss to contribute.
Thus my eternal summer shall not fade
the empathy outpours, the love of Dansby shrill
whilst thou, cocooned in urban garret fully paid
bewildered yet to whom to send the bill.
so long as men can play this lovely game
you add them up and i’ll apportion blame.
Such fun…thank you Jonathan F…you other guys, pile on…it’s not that difficult.
New Thread. Blazon, I’ll bring you over.
