Paul Maholm is actually one of the best homegrown Pittsburgh Pirates of the last 20 years. Not as good as Jason Kendall or Andrew McCutchen, but better than pretty much everyone else.

Did you just lead with Ja Rule? Because I’m pretty sure you just led with Ja Rule.
Sometimes you just have to lead with Ja Rule.
The Natspros are 5-1 against It’s Only The Fish and 4-6 against Ml teams. Unpossible.
Queens in the house, yo…
Gio just imploded at Citi field. Leaves with 5 ER in 4 IP. Unfortunately the Mets bullpen is unlikely to hold the lead.
Gio needs to go to his pharmacist
Isn’t “MI” teams a strange term, since there is only one?
Clint Barmes has hit Maholm pretty well in 38 PA, 441/500/765. In other news, Clint Barmes is a Pirate.
Blake DeWitt on the DL with “lower back soreness”. Perhaps he picked that up helping the traveling secretary move some luggage off the hospitality bus? Regardless, it allows us to call up David Carpenter for some extra bullpen help as we continue this weird road trip.
The Mets continue to be useless.
Dewitt on the DL allows them to keep Avilan off the DL and allows us to add another reliever for the road trip. Has Laird been behind the plate in all 3 of our losses?
3 K’s. nice start
@10, no just 2/3 of them. That’s enough of a sample size for me. He blows.
Runs would be nice.
My TV just switched to commercial after Johnson’s ball flew into the air, what happened?!
With Johnson’s current hitting luck you just knew Marte was going to fail catching that.
Edit: Marte didn’t quite extend his arm, so the ball glanced off his glove. I think he got a little nervous about running into the bullpen wall.
Apparently a really long double.
Did anyone hear the cry the baseball let out when it realized it was going to strike Gattis?
Ugh, FatJuan.
Looks like the days of FatJuan seeing a fastball are pretty much over.
double play would have scored a run
Don’t do anything stupid, Simmons.
WOOO!
That’ll work, Andrelton.
Intentional walk to set up a double play?
In defense of Fatjuan, those three pitches were pretty much perfect. Would have been nice if he had put one in play still.
Nice patient at-bat by Andrelton.
I’ll take that.
A run—this one’s in the bag!
Maholm fooled them.
Strikeouts with the bases loaded and less than 2 outs are way better than double plays. And now it looks like we’ll at least clear BJ…so that’s nice as well.
BJ…. *sigh*
I don’t know what the opposite of “setting the table” would be, but that’s what the top of our order does.
BJ and Jason aren’t setting the table well. If we must play them theough their slumps, can we at least drop them down in the order? Please?
What krussell said.
It’s mind blowing that the Braves have a 13-3 record with the suckitude they have endured at the top of the order.
Johnson – Upton – Gattis, perhaps.
We’d just be complaining that there was no one to drive them in instead.
Maholm is tricky.
I went up to get an almond joy and he’s already through the inning.
Sometimes you feel like a nut.
@36 for the win?
First out not a K
In case you missed it, here’s Big Papi’s inspirational f-bomb at Fenway today.
He better walk Gattis and Johnson
Evan’s cooled.
Runs, please. Maholm can’t shut the world out forever.
Uggla’s out. Lower back soreness?
Evan looks good behind the plate.
Thanks to Gaby Sanchez for bailing Maholm out there.
Ball-strike calls have been consistently inconsistent all year.
Heart of the order up for Barves
Dangit.
Jason’s walks tonight are encouraging.
I’m sure going to miss the Astros this year.
It’s the 2nd inning & they’re down 14-1 to Cleveland.
Looked like a strike to me.
@51 You do not have old man’s vision.
Paul is a monster.
Good battle, Paul.
Maholm for Cy Young.
Get some runs and O’Fambrel rest
Johnson is not cooled
Gattis is going to have to learn to lay off those pitches at the shoulders. It’s the only consistent weakness I’ve seen from him.
Feeling good about Francisco here
//so much for that feeling.
Janish is playing for Gwinnett tonight, so I assume he is getting closer to being in playing shape, but I don’t really see how they don’t keep Pena.
Freddie is 3 for 3 with a double tonight.
@59 Yes, he popping out with those high pitches quite often.
well shite
*sigh*
Couldn’t tell them to walk him fast enough.
That’s why you pitch around him.
I can’t believe we’re going to lose again to the Pirates.
No joy in Mudville
Our streak when scoring a run looks like it might come to an end. Pirates have cooled us off these past two games. They have a nice team.
3 innings is plenty of time for a big peach clobber
Not feeling it tonight. Justin and Evan aren’t locked in anymore. The rest of the team needs to do something.
A rally?
Edit: Forgot who was hitting.
Heyward’s swing looks terrible.
71- Whimsically, I wonder why don’t we ever hear the term “locked out.” Does this mean Evan needs to check his pocket for the keys?
Jason and Andrelton look horrid at the plate.
Gearrin is locked out tonight.
Funny how a couple of shitty offensive nights changes the vibe. All of a sudden Freeman can’t get back here fast enough.
Hope abides.
In other news, Michael Bradley of the Indians just came to bat for the fifth time, in the top of the fourth inning.
Alright Evan, now’s your time to snap out of the funk.
Productive out!
BAHHHHHHHHH
Hmm, get the feeling that Johnson up with a runner on second may have been our last chance left in this game. Hope I’m wrong.
Woe is us.
Yeah, if Upton and Johnson hit in the 8th, we ain’t winning it in the 9th. They are about all that’s working lately.
Fransisco last 5 ABs have been strike outs. His last 4 were on 13 pitches
Edit: make that last 6 ABs
So this team really believes Juan Francisco can become an impact player, huh?
Juan is garbage. The booth is always going on about “what happens when this guy gets a full season of ABs?” Well, that’s what happens. He Ks 6 times in a row and sees 14 pitches in 4 ABs.
Success.
FatJuan can hit. He’s just not looking good lately. Same can be said for most of the team. Jason has sucked for worse so far, and nobody is gonna give up on him.
There’s always next year.
At least we’re still undefeated when scoring 2 or more runs.
Jason Grilli is an illustration of why you shouldn’t be impressed with “Closers.”
There are lots of middling starters who could, in one inning stints, and with the luxury of only needing one off-speed pitch, could look dominant.
Two games in a row we’ve lost, but tomorrow we start Medlen.
We’ve got a lot of impact players… I can see the craters all over the lineup.
That 9th inning was a joke, right? I agree with Bethany. Juan pulls off the ball so hard he is looking in the dugout on every swing as he gets blown away by 93 mph fastballs from a journeyman relief pitcher. Hopefully when Freddie is back we will see less Fat Juan and more CJ, even against rh pitching
This is what we’re gonna get with this team. Lots of games where we don’t make much contact. If the contact that we do make doesn’t result in extra-base hits then we’re not going to score much. I think over the long haul we’re still going to be happy with the offense.
I’m more worried about the pitching. We’re not deep there, can’t afford injuries, and need Beechy to come back strong. Not having a power arm in the starting rotation bothers me.
Bradley batting for the sixth time with nobody out in the sixth. He has a chance to become one of the very few players ever to bat eight times in a nine-inning game — the record for plate appearances in a non-extra inning game is 65, which is seven times through the order plus two. Frank Catalanotto and Ian Kinsler did it for the Rangers in that 30-3 game against the Orioles in ’07.
The team is going to be hot and cold, especially with so many regulars in big slumps, but it’s certainly frustrating.
Have they said anything about Uggla?
Uggla strained his left calf and is day-to-day, last I heard.
I, too, wish we had a power arm in the rotation. With Maholm’s super slow curve, I think having him and a power pitcher back-to-back in the rotation would really mess with opponents.
@95 Thank you for using the word “impact” correctly. I’m not a grammar or spelling snob, but I do appreciate correct word usage.
Recapped.
