Atlanta Braves vs. Philadelphia Phillies – Box Score – September 05, 2011 – ESPN.
Well, I guess that the Braves might as well have forfeited, it would have been the same result. And we might as well forget about late-2010 Derek Lowe.
Lowe gave up two runs in the first, and this time wasn’t able to contain the damage for more than a couple of innings. He gave up two in the fourth, and with Cliff Lee on the mound for the Phillies, the three Lowe allowed in the fifth were just icing on the bitter cake that was this game.
The Braves got fewer hits (5) than the Phillies scored runs off of Lowe (7) and Lee scored more runs (1) than the entire Braves team (0). It was ugly. The only time when they got two hits in an inning a double play came between.
The good news is that Peter Moylan came back and pitched to three batters, all of whom he retired. Scott Linebrink gave up a homer to Ryan Howard, no surprise, leading off the seventh, right in front of Moylan. Arodys Vizcaino gave up a run in the eighth.
Well, the “red-hot” Cardinals, who weren’t going to lose another game this year, have now dropped three-of-four, two-of-three at home to the crappy Reds; dropped our magic number by 4 during a period in which we have also lost three-of-four; and been caught for second place in the wild card by the wheezing Giants.
To Ryan from the last thread: I don’t think I’m giving the director too much credit, really. Zack Snyder has now made five movies — the Dawn of the Dead remake, 300, The Watchmen, The Legend of Ga’hoole (the animated owl movie), and Sucker Punch, and all of them were greeted by the exact same critical reaction: cool visuals, but incoherent story. He’s not a nobody, and he’s not a complete hack. He’s a brilliant visual stylist who sucks at telling a coherent story. Sucker Punch is no exception.
I think with Sucker Punch (the only one of the five on which he has a story credit), Snyder was trying to make a serious point — the covers on the soundtrack are too glaringly obvious to be just a coincidence, and no piece of literature has EVER left its main character nameless without a very good reason for doing so. The point I believe he was trying to make was, understandably given his pedigree, essentially visual in nature, apparently having something to do with images of nubile female sexuality — but just because he obviously failed at making his point doesn’t mean he didn’t have one.
One mystery that can only be revealed by listening to the post-game show is whether we have to tip our cap to our opponent, or give them a little credit.
Jay just said we have to give the Phils a little credit for this win. Just FYI.
(To be fair, he might have said we need to give them a lot of credit. I’m paraphrasing…)
Well, that sucked.
Spike,
So how was Roky?
@2 Because he failed to make his point it doesn’t matter that he had one.
seriously i am really thinking we aren’t going to be in the playoffs. or if we are we’ll be a lameduck who we know has no chance at winning it like last year
seriously i am really thinking we aren’t going to be in the playoffs. or if we are we’ll be a lameduck who we know has no chance at winning it like last year
Oh, I believe you’re serious. Hey, I was fretting a little bit too a week or so back (just a minor episode), but I think the odds of us not making the playoffs are so slim that it doesn’t bear repeating. Especially on nights when the magic number goes down. Which it did. Tonight. Capisce?
As to your latter point, well… I’m a big believer in “once you’re in it you can win it.” Still, I will be embarrassed if we back into it. I will be embarrassed if we win the wild card and are 10 games behind the Phillies in the East. Normally wild cards barge into the postseason with a big head of steam. The narrative is written that the wild card was the hottest team in the league and not one to take lightly when they pushed on to the World Series. But if we are a 90-win team, I just don’t see a lot of glory attached to our wild card berth. Anyways…
I basically agree with Bethany. I recognize that he had a point in mind when making the movie, but since he failed to get that point across at all it basically doesn’t matter. I have actually liked the rest of Snyder’s movies to varying degrees (with the exception of The Owls of Ga’hoole, which I have not seen), but if you have a point to make you have to do so with a watchable movie, especially in the case of mainstream movies, otherwise it is entirely for naught. I mean in the end, a Twitter post from Zach Snyder lamenting the sexualization of women in pop culture would’ve been more effective than that movie.
So, by dressing up girls as sex slaves and placing them in a fantasy world killing all male-based characters, Snyder was trying to poke fun at the World of Warcraft gamers and their misconceptions of females of the world? That’s basically what he said in an interview, and if so…MISSION FAILED!
The Braves are certainly backing into the playoffs.
“Oh, I believe you’re serious….but I think the odds of us not making the playoffs are so slim that it doesn’t bear repeating. Especially on nights when the magic number goes down. Which it did. Tonight. Capisce?”
‘Emma’ knows. He is trolling.
Sort of like how the guy who decided to put the Lord Baltimore colors on the Maryland helmets had an idea in mind, an idea that might have had some merit. However, because he created the worst helmets in football history, it is an idea whose merit he does not get credit for.
‘Emma’ knows. He is trolling.
Oh, I don’t know. He strikes me as softheaded enough to obsess about it. And if not, at least for my tastes, it makes for good performance art.
I kind of dig the Maryland uniforms.
@14, I do too. Very reminiscent of heraldic symbols ye olde knights wore on their shields and tunics and stuff.
@5, i had another gig and didn’t get to stay. Boooo!
Bethany, I disagree — not because I’m trying to defend the movie per se, but just because I’d rather watch a movie in which an idea is badly expressed, than a movie in which there is no idea whatsoever, like Transformers 3 or Cowboys & Aliens, probably my two least favorite movies of the summer. I’d rather watch a writer-director strive and fail than watch a hack aim for mediocrity and achieve it.
Ryan, agreed, mission failed — but that means that he had a mission. That’s all I’m saying.
The Help is a great movie
If your idea is something incoherent about the exploitation of female sexuality, and you bungle the idea so much that even your best defenders can offer only a half-hearted “maybe he was trying to say something like this,” then in fact what you’ve done is create a work that is mired in the same crass exploitation of female sexuality you were, perhaps, in theory, possibly trying to critique.
This seems to me a bad idea. If you can’t pull it off, all you’ve done is created yet another piece of soft-core exploitation to add to the heap. Which is, I suspect, all Sucker Punch is.
If you’re going to go for the quadruple-axel, by god you better land the thing. Else you’re just on your ass on the ice.
FREDI: But for me, Cliff Lee, you’ve got to tip your hat tonight.
Well, crap. Jay tells me I’ve gotta give the Phils a lot of credit. Now Fredi tells me I have to tip my cap specifically to Cliff Lee. Dammit man, the humiliation never ends!
I think Emma is just trying to reverse jinx us.
Pretty clear that the Phillies are, at this point, much better than the Braves. Earlier in the year, sans Pence and with Jurrjens and Hanson in the Braves rotation, the teams were close, but I can’t say that now. Even if the Braves were to somehow win the next two against the end of the Phillies rotation, it’s hard to see beating Halladay, Lee, and Hamels. Doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen but the Braves have clearly regressed vis a vis the Phillies. But the Phillies may be irrelevant anyway because that would require getting past Milwaukee.
@21
I would much rather get them in a four game set, but they are clearly the tam to beat right now.
Plus Arizona has closed the gap on the Brewers
@20
Should we reverse jinx him and talk about what a great poster he is?
The playoffs are a crapshoot that any team in it can win. Look at the 83-win 2006 Cardinals.
The playoffs are a crapshoot and any team CAN win but still, some outcomes are more likely than others. I think the Phillies will have an enormous amount of pressure on them that none of the other teams will have so they aren’t a sure thing. But, I would still rather have their team than ours at this point.
I think either of the Maryland helmets would have been cool. Just wish they’d made up their minds before gametime.
Glad they won, though. Or, more accurately, glad It Sucks to be U lost.
I know I point it out a bunch, but Chipper sat the last two against two more aces, Kershaw and Lee. Not a coincidence.
100% chance of rain tonight. Don’t envision getting this one in which means doubleheader on Wednesday, which in turn, means back to back doubleheaders. Yikes!
There’s no way they force back to back doubleheaders.
At what point does Jose Constanza stop being “the hot hand”?
Who has argued that Constanza is still a hot hand?
@29
They might not have a choice. Philly doesn’t have an off day for the rest of the season.
Given both teams are likely going to make the playoffs with room to spare, and the two teams play in the last series of the season, couldn’t they tentatively punt the game and then add it as part of a doubleheader in Atlanta at the end of the year in the unlikely event that it’s necessary? Forcing both teams into back-to-back doubleheaders is silly.
It could be played on Sept 29th
Does the CBA permit back to back doubleheaders? I think there was one played by Buffalo but that’s AAA obviously.
I think I recall some team at some point in recent history playing back-to-back doubleheaders. The Mets? Seems like it would be someone like them. But I’m not clear on that…
Or maybe it was two doubleheaders within a three day period…
According to mlb.com, the NL playoffs start on Oct. 1, so that would be a possibility barring a crazy three-team tie for the wild card, you’re right. Again, assume you’re not gonna play the game, but if it’s necessary, fly up there and play it on the 29th.
I can’t remember where I read that the Phillies also have a doubleheader scheduled for Thursday, but that is apparently inaccurate. The Phillies do not have a doubleheader scheduled for Thursday. It’s next Thursday they have a doubleheader. I’m afraid that makes it more likely we’ll get back-to-back doubleheaders, as the Phillies will probably want to play two on Wednesday.
EDIT: I believe that was the Mets back in April, and it was two doubleheaders in three days, not two in a row. They complained to the commissioner about us making them play a doubleheader the day after a rainout, forcing them into that five games in three days gauntlet.
Seriously, though, what the hell is the point of even having a commissioner if he’s not gonna save teams from situations such as back-to-back doubleheaders and five games in three different cities in 72 hours?
@38 – maximizing profits for his friends who own teams.
@33
They could just call the game and not force us to make them up, if they are not needed. There is a good chance a double header would be rained out tomorrow anyway
This is fun. What if the douleheader with the Mets rains out as well? Not unlikely, according to weather.com.
@2 AAR
Thanks for your points. And to those who responded.
I couldn’t decide if I didn’t get the movie or if there was nothing there to get.
Zack Snyder has taken responsibility for it and hasn’t moaned about the studio or vowed to release “the definitive director’s cut.”
That’s all I can ask of an artist.
In my 6th grade history class my students are learning about Canada. None of them, even the baseball fans in the class, had ever heard of the Montreal Expos. Now does everyone feel old? (No, Iloveemmastone is not one of my students.)
@43 – Sigh.
#43–As a historian, the passage of time (and what it does to memory) is often fascinating and frequently depressing. A few years ago when I was teaching history in Singapore, we discovered that many of our students (possibly half) claimed that they had never seen footage of atomic bomb blast. We were amazed and, of course, virtually none of my students had ever heard of Dr. Strangelove….
Anyway, the Expos (like so many things in the past) deserve better….
#43
So, they’ve never heard of Maggie Trudeau either, I’ll assume?
It’s just like those people who don’t remember when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.
A few years ago when I was teaching history in Singapore, we discovered that many of our students (possibly half) claimed that they had never seen footage of atomic bomb blast.
It’s true we want the young whippersnappers to know about important historical events, but there is a pretty good silver lining to what you’ve described.
The youth must be told the legend of Youppi!
It would be awesome if Youppi exploded in a mushroom cloud.
We have lineup!
No Heyward against the righty, Chipper’s over his flu, and the Barking Quad is down in the 6-hole:
1. Bourn CF
2. Prado LF
3. McCann C
4. Uggla 2B
5. Jones 3B
6. Freeman 1B
7. Gonzalez SS
8. Constanza RF
9. Hudson P
Sigh.
47- Forget it, you’re rolling.
And the youth (of Montreal) don’t need to be told the legend of Youppi!- he’s now the mascot for the Montreal Canadiens.
One thing I didn’t realize until DOB mentioned it on Twitter: Cory Gearrin’s not up nor is he likely to be called up. That’s a bit of a message to the kid, I’d think.
Does anyone have a complete list of our September call ups? I’ve lost track.
The official site lists Boscan, Varvaro, Delgado, Teheran, Moylan, and Richardson as called up since September 1. Of course, we’ve also acquired Diaz and Wilson, released Lugo, and disabled Sherrill. So there are now 31 players on the active roster, listed here:
http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/team/roster_active.jsp?c_id=atl
Wow. The Jags cut Garrard.
Apparently Fredi at least still thinks Constanza is pretty warm.
I don’t understand the basis of any doom and gloom. We’ve started September 2-3. Big whoop. Guess what. We started August that way too, and we went 17-9 last month. (Interesting fact: the braves longest losing streak this season is 3 games).
The season series against the Phillies is basically a toss-up: 6-7. The Braves are the only team to have defeated Lee, Halladay and Hamels at least once each. Granted, that would be difficult for a non-division team to pull off, but the point is they are beatable, and this team can beat them.
Losing Jurjjens is a blow, but Hudson and Beach are pitching well, and Hanson will be back in time to have a chance at entering the playoffs strong. And then you have the rookies, any one of whom might show us something between now and then.
And our odds of not making the playoffs are about 1%.
Just giving a little perspective for some folks who struggle with the concept…
Yeah, but being Yoculan-slapped by the team you’re trailing doesn’t make for merry men and women.
And after last night, the prospect of having to face the Brew Crew with a rotation of Hudson (yay), Beachy (awfully young) and Lowe (gag) is not very encouraging.
DOOOOOOOOMED, I tellya …
Wilkin Ramirez and Brandon Hicks have also not gotten called up.
Is there a chance of getting the game in tonight?
About to listen to some live jazz at a place called Chloe’s Cup where they have an endless cup of coffee of which I’ve had literally about 15 cups today since I got here at 11:30 this morning to study my Japanese and read for some assignments due soon did you guys know the Iliad is ridiculously gory yet remarkablely boring at the same time maybe I just don’t appreciate ancient Greek epic literature I dunno it just doesn’t strike a chord with me hey is caffeine poisoning a thing I think I may have it.
@60
Absolutely not, unless they let the players play the field on jet skis.
61- No, you’re just correcting the excess of blood in your caffeine system. Same thing’s happened to me a few times. I don’t envy any attempts you make to get any sleep tonight, however.
We got 13 inches of rain in 48 hours from the storm in Philly. If they get the game in, it will be over around 7:00 am
Strasburg is up to his old ways against the Dodgers: 2 hits and 0 runs over 5 so far.
8:55 first pitch
I caught the end of what sounded like a pretty good interview with Frank Wren at the end of the Braves Radio rain delay show.
And we have a ballgame! Popup from Bourn, walk to Prado. Crowd sounds pretty thin.
The Cardinals are winning again… I swear, this isn’t looking good at all right now
That last pitch to Chipper was not a strike.
Agreed.
They’re playing? This will test my loyalty to samcrow in about an hour.
Clearly, the home plate ump has decided to call everything a strike in a bid to get this game in tonight. Go get ’em, Tim.
The Weather Channel claims they’ve got maybe a two-hour window before more heavy rain moves in. So I guess they figured they might as well try.
Of course, that makes Chutley’s HR even worse; this game probably ain’t going nine innings.
Hudson knows it’s a must-win game: Immediately gives up 2 runs… SMH
Is this the strategy, Tim? Keep them hitting until the rain comes back?
Edit: The way the rain’s picked up in the last couple minutes, maybe it was.
Potentially short game, so Huddy had to get his Episode out of the way early.
Of course, that makes Ibanez’s RBI single even worse; this game probably ain’t going nine innings.
Well, this has been fun. I’m done.
The sound of raindrops hitting the Braves radio mics is almost as loud as the announcers.
@80 – Until someone hits one near the warning track.
This game should be played under protest.
82- The Braves’ hitters are playing under protest. It’s a passive-aggressive sort of thing.
This just looks like a team that has given up
I swear… there CAN’T be another team in baseball that can make three outs faster than these guys. With a rookie on the mound for the Fillies – no matter what his record is – I guess we shouldn’t have expected a ballgame.
What we should be doing is throwing at the Phillies and trying to injure them. That’s the only way we have a chance at beating them.
Hey… Victorino would be a great place to start that strategy!
87- I don’t normally endorse this strategy, but I’m willing to make exceptions for Hawaiian dumbasses.
I would like to bring in Rusty Linestink to do the honors, though. Don’t want Huddy getting suspended.
And Constanza isn’t the hot hand anymore. I’m really worried that we’re going to be playing Xbox in October
AAG is extremely good at defense.
So… since our 5 – 1 victory on July 30, the Braves have won a grand total of 3 games by more than 3 runs, and have a run differential of -1 (including today). I’m not going to say that we’re running on fumes here, but we’re not exactly firing on all cylinders. I think you’ve got to tip your hat to the Braves’ bullpen, really, and simultaneously give them a lot of credit. Without O’Ventbrel et al., the DOOOOOMED talk would be far louder.
No, AAG is overrated. He always makes Freeman have to stretch. And with a sore quad that is a bad omen
@88-89: See… Hudson could have done in one pitch what he took ten to do. Way to go around the elbow.
Seriously though… I don’t want to see anyone get hurt, ever. But if it had to happen to someone, Victorino would be a great choice. 🙂 I still hold a grudge against that ass-eyed bastard for his hit on McCann at the plate some years ago.
Without O’Ventbrel, the Braves would quite literally have 10 fewer wins. That’s how many collective WAR they have. We would be exactly as bad as Chief Nocahoma would think that we are, if he still posted here.
Prado sucks. McCann sucks. They need to be moved out of the 2 and 3 spots ASAP
I think you’ve got to tip your hat to the Braves’ bullpen, really, and simultaneously give them a lot of credit.
I am prepared to both, while chewing gum if Fredi tells me to.
@95 true – but also, we’ve won substantially more games since 7/30 than our run differential would indicate, Pythag-wise. While our good bullpen has reduced the Braves’ runs allowed, it has also allowed us to win a lot more than we’ve deserved over the last month or so, given the number of runs the Braves ultimately did give up.
EDIT: AAaaargh, seriously McCann? MORE LIKE MCCAN’T, RIGHT?
Wait a second, I have to buy a cap on credit? Who am I supposed to tip?
Brian, if you’re looking for someone to tip, allow me to humbly suggest that convenient “Donate” button in the upper left…
Also, I hope that one of our guys will realize that the low strike is being called and start swinging at it once they’re down two strikes. Every single Worley strikeout has come on a pitch at (or below) the knees.
This is a morning recap situation. See you tomorrow.
Wait a second, I have to buy a cap on credit? Who am I supposed to tip?
Hell if I know, man! I’m just passing along what Fredi’s saying to do.
Our shit is so doomed, yo.
A blast.
DAN! One more random home run and we’ve tied it!
DAN UGGLA!
@104
Huh.. Why are you talking to me? Aren’t you late for a date rape or something?
Hey! Uggla!
@104 Emma, girl/dude, chillax. Yes, the Braves are performing rather poorly of late, and yes, if we keep doing this, we’ll be toast in the playoffs. That said, there’s no reason to think that the Braves of the 2011 playoffs are destined to be the crap team you see before you tonight – it could be Hot Hands all around and we dominate the playoffs, who knows. Fact of the matter is, baseball is a fickle sport and fortunes can change rather quickly, like right now when Uggla went oppo on Vance “in my pants” Worley. Suck it, Phillies.
Hope!
My girlfriend called me and I missed the Uggla homer and the two base hits that followed. Just caught A-Gon strike out. Should I get her to call me back?
If she knows someone who can injure AAG badly enough to miss the playoffs, yes!
Edit: And Constanza too. See if you can get a package deal.
Don’t worry, AAG is here to snuff out any ill-advised hope you may be harboring!
Gonzalez-Constanza-pitcher = rally squashed, inning over.
@113
I had more confidence in Hudson than the other two combined.
Damn.
Nice rally there, Braves. Stupid home runs always ruin rallies!!!!
112 – you forgot to mention Constanza too, who is apparently not cold enough yet for Fredi to notice.
“I had more confidence in Hudson than the other two combined.”
Hudson hit the ball pretty hard after the strikeouts from Gonzalez and Constanza.
So, I banned Adam Lawson (Emma), after he resorted to the personal attack thing immediately after Mac signed off for the evening. I notified Mac of my action, and (of course) it will be totally up to him whether everyone’s favorite troll gets reinstated (and whether my moderating privileges are revoked…).
10 game hitting streak for Dan Uggla. Guys, only 24 more games and he’s got the all-time Braves record!
I can’t imagine Mac would revoke your moderating privilege, Stu. If he didn’t trust you to make judgment calls, then would he have granted you that responsibility?
120- The single season record is safe until next year.
The Seinfeld episode where George wears that big Russian hat was on earlier…
If someone could Photoshop that hat onto Constanza I would love that person forever.
Well, the privileges are typically only used when Mac’s away from the internet for an extended period of time. This is me breaking new ground, though I do think it’s warranted.
Thanks Stu. This place is better without Emma.
Doesn’t seem Mac wanted Emma banned, or he would have done it himself a long time ago. It’s not like Emma’s trolling is some new thing.
Chippah!
Nice snag, Chipper.
I’ve been away (& it’s not exactly keeping me up nights), but why was this person banned? Are there objectionable posts that have been deleted?
Mac gave Adam Lawson his last warning for personal attacks a day or two ago. He isn’t the first person to be banned for personal attacks. Stu’s action was wholly warranted.
Dan,
Well, Mac also doesn’t typically tolerate personal attacks — or the use of “gay” as an insult — and he specifically warned the troll a day or two ago.
Anyway, I didn’t decide to do it lightly, and Mac can easily undo it tomorrow, if he wishes.
ububba,
Yeah, when I blacklisted him, his posts were removed. I’m not the web-savviest quasi-moderator.
The single season record is safe until next year.
Well, if Uggla plays each of our next 21 games, and if he were to get a hit in each, and if we were to play so poorly that we wound up in some bizarre, prolonged tiebreaker playoffs for the wild card that lasted 3 games, and he got a hit in each of those, then he would break the record this year!
But that’s just a hypothetical based on extremely poor play down the stretch.
Ugh. Prado, we’ve already got a middle infielder who specializes in GIDP.
Frediot and Pradon’t combining on another killed rally
Is Simpson really saying that Prado should stop trying to go the other way on everything‽ Do my ears deceive me?
I expect the rain to start at any moment.
Memo to Frediot: When your cleanup hitter has 13 home runs in less than 40 days, and 11 of them are solo shots, you might, just might, want to consider shuffling the lineup.
@John Gaines (122) – Because apparently I don’t have more important projects to be working on… http://i53.tinypic.com/w83n7c.jpg
From this mostly-lurker’s point of view, this blog is a MUCH better place without Emma. Good job Stu. As has already been stated, Mac gave a final warning several days ago. I didn’t see the post that was the nail in the coffin, but I’m assuming it was the equivalent of the class clown right after the teacher steps out for a minute.
This site really needs to have a Braves photoshop contest sometime. Preferably a negative one against one of the Gonzalezs.
Gotta get the lead here.
Nice hitting, Chip! Now, let’s hope that we do better than usual bringing these guys home. That is to say, let’s get at least one. Please?
So… for the love of PeteOrr, please score here Braves. PLEASE.
I just remembered that Constanza is playing RF instead of Heyward.
How about the umpire stop calling strikes on pitches below the knees?
ALEX DON’T DO IT. You know what I’m talking about.
Big inning? Now’s the time.
Oh joy. Just in time for AAG, George, and a PH.
Triple play now?
His at-bats are always a delight. I wonder what he has in store this time..?
Edit: OK, consider me impressed. I thought infield fly was the best-case scenario.
Why oh why is AAG at the plate?
Edit: Yay! AAG failed to completely fail!
That works.
I’ll take it!!!
Well that was unlikely.
Okay, my power went out during this whole rally. I had to turn the radio back on when the power came back up and heard Don talking about “a productive out by Alex Gonzalez.”
I’m thinking I need to just quit listening. I owe it to all you people.
Constanza is so hot right now.
We have got to be the only MLB fanbase that considers getting one run from a bases-loaded, no-out situation a success. (OK, maybe the Giants, too.)
Bases loaded with no outs. One run scores. Of course.
John R., you didn’t stop listening soon enough, apparently.
The second extremely questionable “Let Huddy hit for himself” decision in recent weeks.
Your radio is rebelling against you because you insist on exposing it to Don Sutton. It’s self-defense.
And BTW, the average major league team scores 2.27 runs after loading the bases with no one out. Just saying.
Bases loaded with no outs. One run scores. Of course.
Would this be a situation where you tip your hat to Worley or give him a lot of credit?
Are there a list of criteria for this? If not, there should be.
“Would this be a situation where you tip your hat to Worley or give him a lot of credit?”
Considering he gave up a sac fly to Agony, which is nearly impossible, I’d consider it a failure. Gameday says Constanza “lined out” too, and then the pitcher’s spot never had a chance (with a pitcher in it).
Two rallies started with no outs, but both in front of the Gonzalez-Constanza-pitcher trio.
And Hudson rewards the manager for leaving him in with a lead-off walk.
You have got to be kidding me.
Good thing Huddy was left in to hit!
A mouse learns better from his mistakes than Fredi. At least the mouse learns not to touch the electrified cheese.
And then a double. Yep, Fredi’s a quality manager.
Really glad we kept Hudson in there. Who knows what would have happened if we’d gone to the bullpen here. It might have given the Phillies back the lead!
Damn this team. Just damn them.
Way to go, McCann.
Rarely does the universe kick Fredi back so squarely. Hope he broke a couple of teeth.
Good night, folks. Being a Braves fan kind of suck a big bag of dicks right now.
EDIT: Tip your credit hat to them, Fredi!
Get the hook, you idiot.
I’m beginning to think we should have pinch hit for Hudson last inning.
I’m so grossed out by this team right now, I think I need to take a week off. Maybe then they’ll be out of this funk.
Wow. Gee whiz. In a game that could very easily be rained out early, you leave your pitcher in to hit with two outs and runners at second and third? I mean, I love Huddy and all, but damn…
I use the epithet “Frediot” without any fear of a Sam comeback on this one.
Honestly, I think leaving Hudson in to hit was less inexcusable than leaving Constanza in there — or starting him in the first place.
I really can’t stand this team’s manager. And he’ll be here forever…
How in God’s name is McDowell coming out, not Fredi? How is Hudson staying in the game?
John Mayberry pinch hits for Worley with a 2-run lead. Fuck me.
Fredi, you suck.
CORRECTION: Runners weren’t on second and third for the Braves, but first and second. Still, there was only 1 out and runners in scoring position. It’s likely to be an abridged game what with the bad weather. Bring out your guys that can drive the ball: Hinske, Folk Hero… Score some damned runs!
We’re going to lose for sure now; might as well just leave him in at this point.
And elsewhere, the Cards just beat the Brewers in St. Louis, 4-2.
Fredi: “Venters needs to get some work in.”
Prado is so worthless.
181- Don’t even joke. He’ll do it.
182—Psh, not as worthless as Heyward, who’s not even good enough to get on the field!
That was NOT A STRIKE.
Stupid umpire. “Strike one” was ball four.
Productive out! Productive out!
O’Flaherty is up in the pen.
Okay, now ball two to Polanco WAS a strike. It’s always nice when an umpire calls the strike zone tight to us but wide and low to the other team.
It’s been a while since I noted Chipper’s ascent up the leader boards in various career numbers categories. Let’s see what we’ve got with tonight’s hits so far:
• 1 double gives him 520 for his career, which puts Chipper 2 behind Ed Delahanty for 40th place.
• 2 base hits gives him 2595 for his career, which puts Chipper 2 behind Ed Delahanty for 78th place.
That Ed Delahanty is something else.
Fredi always pushing the right buttons….dumb ass
And imagine how much better Ed would have been if he hadn’t gone over Niagara Falls.
Come to think of it, Ed’s an appropriate player to have in mind tonight, as I can think of a few Braves who should meet the same end.
Where is o’flaherty?
I hate Chase Utley.
First, his name is Utley. What a blue blood, prissy wussy surname. And then his parents go and compound it by naming him “Chase”. Chase??? Come on. I can understand being stuck with Utley, but Chase is entirely a choice. Name the kid Bill or Fred or something, but not Chase.
But mostly because enters the game to “Kashmir” by Led Zeppelin. That is not a song for wussys. And yet he doesn’t care. He just does it anyway.
I hate Chase Utley.
“Prado is so worthless.”
Prado is not “worthless”. He is simply a middle infielder being forced by a cheap team to pretend he is an everyday corner outfielder.
What the hell is fredi doing?
Fredi being Fredi
Is the entire front end of our bullpen unavailable tonight? I like Lisp as much as the next guy, but….where are the lefties here?
Oh, I forgot. Venters is only to pitch the 8th.
Just the mere fact the Fredi left Martinez in to face Howard, who crushes righties and is pathetic against lefties, with a one-run lead, should tell you something’s seriously wrong with the guy. WTF…..
Just how much did Fredlot have on this game?
Well, O’Flaherty was up and throwing. Then Fredi brought in C-Mart. So who knows?
Regardless, Don just said there’s a big cell moving towards the stadium about 15 minutes. Sending Tim Hudson to bat with runners on and two outs when the game has a high likelihood of not going 9 innings is just pure ignorance.
But since we’re just coasting into the playoffs, I guess it’s okay?
I hate our manager. Seriously, anybody but the Phillies…I mean, we had a chance to get back in this game and Fredi just sat and watched it slip away. The dude abides. Man, hate just isn’t a strong enough word to describe this!
God, I need to stop watching this game. This game is like being strapped to the chair in a Clockwork Orange except the straps are entirely in my mind. I just want to stop watching.
Nobody better play me any classical music.
Seriously, is there anyone in the organization that questions our manager’s stupidity?
All of these things will seem mild in comparison to the moves he will make in the playoffs. Buckle up folks, it’s going to get still crazier.
I’ve generally been a supporter of Fredi’s, in the same way I was a supporter of Bobby’s– mainly through the fact that the team is really good around him and he keeps the drama to a minimum.
But, boy…there are nights when it’s really hard to defend him. He’s taken a winnable game and just barfed it away with some really bad decisions. Unless there’s something going on that’s not clear to us in the public (ie, Venters and O’Flaherty are unavailable), the way he managed this inning makes absolutely no freakin’ sense.
202- It’s been a horror show all right. I want to tolchock that gloopy, starry veck right in the yarbles.
Single off the wall. It’s that kind of a night.
An off the wall single by AAG…now those are the moments I always remember as a Braves fan…
it’s midnight for Georgie Boy now
Hey, guys! A pinch hitter! With 2 out in the 8th! Suh-weet!!!
210- Yep, Fredlot knows how to close the barn door after the horse has not only fled but been processed into Elmer’s.
WTF will it take to get Constanza out of the lineup?
“It’s Midnight For Georgie Boy”, I think that won the Tony for Best Drama in the early ’70s. I did a monologue from it when I was in high school.
There is a break
I hope Bourn walks so that Martin can foul out to first to end this inning.
215- Bourn decided to kill the suspense.
We’re going to end the game with David Ross, Brooks Conrad, and Matt Freakin’ “The Guy We Traded For To Be The Ultimate Bench Guy” Diaz sitting on the bench.
The Phillies are allowing fans to exchange their tickets for tonight’s game for one of six games next year.
Sadly, the Braves can’t offer us these five hours (counting rain delays) of our lives back. And they won’t offer us something that might make the pain worthwhile- Fredlot’s head on a pointed stick.
I’m pretty sure we don’t have a quorum at this late hour, and it wouldn’t seem right to start it up without Mac around, but perhaps tomorrow we could take up the matter of firing Fredi. I think a show of hands ought to suffice.
Can I leave my proxy AYE with you?
2-0 pitch, down 3 runs in the 9th and you swing? WTF?
DOB’s tweet at the infamous Hudson at bat went like this:
“Constanza lines out to LF, brings up Hudson with 2 on and 2 out, score’s 2-2 in the #Braves 6th”
To which I would have added “(WTF?!?!?)”. But then I’m not the Braves beat writer.
Well, McCann saw that the rest of team didn’t care tonight, so why knock himself out?
I’m starting to hope the Giants and Cards go on winning streaks just long enough to remind these guys that they can’t sleepwalk into the playoffs.
One AYE for you, one AYE for me. How many does it take for Fredi to get fired?
Good night all.
I’m starting to hope the Giants and Cards go on winning streaks…
And if they do, you’ll really have to tip your cap to them!
This was not a good showing for the Braves last night. We were coming off a big walk off win vs the Dodgers on sunday and to came out and lay a egg vs the Phillies was not what we needed. The Braves have not been playing as good as i would like losing four of our last six games but we are getting healthy again just in time for the postseason. Moylan is back from the DL which only makes our bullpen deeper. Hanson shoulder seems to be getting better just in time for a late season run. No worries Braves Country we will make a statement in October! Go Braves!

Am I imagining this or have the Braves played sloppily, carelessly, lackadaisically, and indifferently while the Phillies are busting their behinds to win these games? I understand that they probably couldn’t catch the Phils even with a sweep, but don’t like what I’m seeing.
Where are those “we are going to catch the Phillies” posters now?
At least Heyward hit the ball hard lately. /bitterness
Go Braves!
Recapped.
