ESPN – Braves vs. Diamondbacks Box Score, July 28 2007 – MLB
I tire of this. Please, more offense, more relief, more something. This is the fourth extra-inning loss in the last two weeks. The Braves are 5 games back. You do the math.
Once again, they fell behind early and rallied. Smoltz gave up a solo homer in the first and two runs in the third, but Matt Diaz doubled home two in the fourth, then John singled him home. But after that, the Braves couldn’t push a runner across even given several chances, and in one of the homer-friendliest ballparks in the majors have played 21 innings of baseball with no homers.
In the tenth, Bobby used Yates, which was an obvious mistake, and soon enough there were two men on with one out and he had little choice but to make the switch to Paronto, trying to get the double play. First pitch, game over. Really, this is boring. Same thing every day, with minor variations. I want Teixeira. Rumor has it the deal is waiting for Bud’s approval, but I believe he’s currently following Barry Bonds around the country like Bonds is the Dead and who knows when he’ll get around to it.

Maybe the Mets and Phillies will both lose and it won’t be so bad.
Oh wait, they’re playing the Nationals and Pirates.
held to 3 runs by the immortal doug davis.
The Astros just traded Dan Wheeler to the Devil Rays for Ty Wigginton.
and it’s all my fault… i just now realized that i completely forgot to wear my smoltz jersey today. sorry i dropped the ball.
i’ll definitely wear my hudson one tomorrow. well, after church.
if they can’t score any runs off of livan hernandez, then i don’t think adding tex is going to do the trick.
interesting… i wouldn’t have expected that houston to pick up someone as useful as wigginton. not exactly prospects for a rebuilding team, but a useful player that can play a number of positions. i’m surprised that a “win now” team didn’t get him.
It’s okay I still blame the Reds for everything, right?
Kyle B,
Sure, blame whatever you want, it doesn’t matter now. This team isn’t going anywhere but the basement of the NL East.
This is really unbelievable…
What’s really sad…is we knew the Braves would lose on Thursday, last night kind of figured it, but today with Smoltz against Davis…you thought they would win.
By the way, what a gutty performance by Smoltz.
Edgar, Chipper, Francouer and JULIO FRANCO is all we have???
If we can’t even win a John Smoltz-Doug F. Davis matchup, is anyone here excited about this team’s prospects in the postseason, if we should by some miracle get there, even with the addition of Tex?
Lost in all this is the recent slump of Andruw Jones, the multiplying strikeouts of Kelly Johnson and the frustrating aspects of Willie Harris leading off.
Kali, you gave it a hell of a try, but its time for an option out to Richmond. Would love to see Stockman or Startup get a call.
Ledezma — cut him, please. Soon as I saw him appear last night I vocalized that we would lose in less than 5 minutes. It only took 1.
This has been a dreary couple of years.
Teams get hot and cold. The Braves might want to get hot and again quickly.
Hudson-Hernandez feels like a must win.
Is this the furthest back we have been this year?
Also, holding out Salty again today tells me a deal is real close.
I saw Buster Olney on ESPNEWS this afternoon and he mentioned that the Braves have their final offer in to the Rangers, and that Texas is now waiting to see if they can get anything better.
The interesting parts, Olney says, is that in his talks with other executives around the league, they all say Schuerholz is one GM that won’t be used as a pawn and wait around forever for an answer. He’ll call the GM back, rescind the offer and go in another direction.
What other offer? I mean, I don’t see a starting pitcher on the market who’s a clear upgrade on Carlyle. Okay, better than Reyes, but Reyes won’t pitch that much. The market for relievers is ever more insane, and I wouldn’t trade one of the key prospects for anyone without frontline experience. Teixeira is the only offensive star on the market, unless JS can talk the ChiSox out of Konerko.
Honestly, it’s almost at the stage where if the Braves can’t get Teixeira, or some equivalent player to play first or left, they’d be better off as sellers and reloading by dealing Renteria, Wickman, Paronto, and maybe Villarreal. (Andruw still won’t waive his no-trade is my guess.)
Mac,
You’re right. If Huddy doesn’t win tomorrow, the Braves would be better off selling. Who was it that was worried about us getting swept a few days ago?
Phils are up 10-5 in the 8th, Mets are losing 6-5 in the with a runner on 3rd. We might not be able to catch up to the Phils
Mets lost, back to “only” 4.5.
It’s amazin’ the Mets have not run off & left us.
It’s high time Bobby get Johnson back to the top of the lineup where he belongs.
braves14 — i agree. willie should be hitting 8th
Willie’s an out machine at the top of the lineup lately, the 6 hit game notwithstanding.
And here we are talking about needing more offense.
Come on Bobby, make the move. This isn’t working.
Why does the deal need Bud’s approval? The only transactions which require his approval are when the deal involves cash over $1M, right?!
Yes kc. The New York Post rumor is Teixeira and cash to the Braves.
The Texas Rangers’ official page says the Diamondbacks are in on Teixeira now, so who the hell (aside from John Schuerholz and Jon Daniels) really knows what is going on?
Or if there’s a financial adjustment in the contract, though I can’t figure out what that may be. The Braves may have said that they’ll make the trade if the Rangers send significant cash with Teixeira, cash they can use to take a pitcher off someone’s hands without too much in the way of prospects — prospects they won’t have anymore if they send a bunch to Arlington.
That’s a very complex sentence. I should figure out a better way to say it. Oh, well.
Kyle Davies watch: 5 innings, 4 runs, 6 hits, a homer, 2 walks, 3 strikeouts, 99 pitches.
Cormier is sadly the next one waiting in line when JoJo has another bad outing.
Yeah, he pitches tomorrow.
Didn’t a Tigers pitcher–Nate Robertson?–get a DL stint for a tired arm earlier this year? Sounds like Yates–he’s gassed. Recall Stockman, Devine, or Ascanio–anyone with a fresh arm. Cox should not have brought Yates in; he should have gone with Paronto or Wickman instead.
I accidentally posted tomorrow’s game thread early. Sorry about that.
wow new thread…
Looks like KJ is in one of his streaks ….no hits and strikeouts…
re: bud’s approval
it seems like they’re trying to get texas to eat some of tex’s salary.
which means i’m guessing the braves won’t be getting a reliever from them.
which means (as i often repeat) i hope they go after damaso marte.
Sell. Sell. Sell.
See if Devine and the chafe in Richmond/team formerly in Greenville can outpitch our current scrubs.
No point in trading Salty for Texy. Not like we can afford to keep him or he’s good enough to make us better than the other NL teams competing for playoff spots.
Sell. Sell. Sell.
So we’ve lost four games and now we’re doomed? You people slay me.
