You’d like the article, Alex. It says that Andruw is the most overrated player in baseball or something like that. I don’t know, Stark is on my ignore list.
Well, defensively for many years, Andruw was one of the 2 best center fielders in the game, along with Hunter.
But Stark is absolutely right from an offensive perspective and from a defense perspective, many have caught up w/ Druw.

What a surprise! Macay allowed 2 inherited runners to score. He should never be brought in with runners on base.

Well, what it says is that Andruw isn’t as good defensively now as he used to be. That is, he gets to fewer balls, which if true is not surprising because he’s heftier than he was in ’99 or so. He makes the ones he does get to look pretty, so his defensive rep remains intact.
And yeah, we need to deal for another starter posthaste. Is that the point of the extended Salty audition?
Stark says that 100 balls drop in centerfield every year on Andruw Jones’ watch that a great defensive centerfielder would catch.

Well this game is done. Way to go Braves, no other team would let the Phillies get over .500. You did that, and more!
The Braves’ second place will probably be gone by next week. Only 2.0 games up on the Phillies now. Why is Chipper sitting STILL?

we are in trouble if we cant get a couple of pitchers. we have no left hander in the pen that can get anyone out, only 3 starters who can do an adequate job, an over swinging 1st baseman and center-fielder, and a 3rd baseman who gets hurt on a big wind gust. if these things do not improve quickly, we will be looking up at everyone. what a disappointment.
And… we see why Stark is on my ignore list. 100 balls? Sheesh.

Well, this game isn’t worth watching. I think I’ll go outside and toss the ball around myself, I’m pretty sure I could make the rotation soon.

I’m with BX. I’m going to go and enjoy the sunshine. This is the most inconsistent braves team I’ve seen in a long time.

on another note…stark may have to eat his words this year because andruw is right now on place to have about 470 putouts this year, the most since ’99.
This has been a miserable series. Here come the bum replacements.

Mac,
What if it really is 100 balls? Isn’t the whole point of the baseball blogosphere the idea that properly calibrated statistics tell stories traditional baseball executives/observers are bound to miss?
Was something wrong with the methodology, or is yours the sort of I-know-what-I-see argument that in other forms causes people to fawn over the David Ecksteins of the world? (I don’t mean for that to sound hostile – I’m just curious, and I may read too much Fire Joe Morgan for my own good.)
100 balls a year is a whole lot. I could see 20, 40, but 100? No way.
In general, the more sophisticated a defensive measurement is the better Andruw looks. Stark is probably using range factor or something similar, and Andruw’s range factors (before this season) have been down. There are several reasons for this, which I won’t go into right now. Andruw was a great, great centerfielder in the late nineties and is still very good.
Gopd try! Anything to avoid a sweep: I believe that the Braves will get back on track in the near future….
If the Braves can get Chipper back, Andruw starts hitting and the back end of the rotation becomes consistent and sound, then things should get fun….
Common, Braves. Don’t want to give up a sweep to the dare-I-say surging Phils.
thats ALOT of If’s Stephen……
I think the only one of those we can count on is Chipper coming back…..
I normally don’t post…but maybe a post today pre-game will get the boys going. How ’bout it…let’s start a streak.
Mhhhmmmm, just the kind of start we need!
Rough start yet again…
Davies looked real good getting two pops to Edgar, but man, you can’t make a mistake like that to a guy like Howard, even when he’s down.
Oh damn Kyle…
Game over
you gotta be shittin me!
Dobbs????…. wtf
Well, I guess there will be a video tomorrow.
Where’s the Vulture…
Yay… *sarcastic cheer*
hehe
Just joining the game….I guess I am glad that its a long season…
It’s going to be a veeeerrryyy long season if things don’t change soon.
A nearly solid inning for Davies; well done Kyle!
Salty!
Aw, I was hoping they give him the silent treatment in the dugout 😀
Andruw!! Nice way to bail out Davies….
Wow….. Andruw sucks!
Great catch by Andruw there. He’s still got some hops.
Jayson Stark just cringed somewhere…
LOL, and there goes Skip about Jayson Stark, right on time.
hmmmmm…Chip and Skip discussing the Stark article.
Chip would like it when Rollins said the Phillies were the team to beat. Can we get some Braves fans to announce our games please?
Do you think Woodward should be destroyed or Davies?
I’d like to apologize to everyone I tried to reassure early in the season by saying “the starting rotation will be fine” after Hampton went down.
So, um, how do we feel about a three-man rotation?
On late, so a few things:
1. what’s the Stark article everyone’s discussing?
2. why do the Braves suck so bad now and we are getting swept at home by the Phillies, nullifying the opening series of the year.
Also nullifying the 2 of 3 we just took from the Mets. This sucks.
I’m really fed up hearing Chip Caray talk about every other team but the Braves.
Is there a petition somewhere? Can someone start one?
Our rotation currently consists of Smoltz, Huddy, James, Pain and Anguish
Davies, Chuck James, Carlyle, Cormier.
Does everyone agree NOW we need to deal for another starter to have any chance whatsoever?
You’d like the article, Alex. It says that Andruw is the most overrated player in baseball or something like that. I don’t know, Stark is on my ignore list.
Alex R,
Jayson Stark is putting out a book in where he picks the most over- and underrated players in baseball history.
He picked Andruw as the most overrated CF of ALL-TIME.
The article is somewhere on Espn, Page 2 probably.
Chip Caray needs to be taken behind a woodshed and…
I won’t finish the statement because Mac doesn’t like me to make violent pronouncements.

should say pace not “place”.
Hey, Moylan was the Babe Ruth of Australia.
I would go outside and enjoy the sun, but as usual, it’s about 93 degrees now and I’m not in the mood for sunburn.
Yes, I get as much exercise as a lethargic panda.
Does this get Andruw going now?
Hopefully.

I just came inside and almost threw up my freshly ingested burgers. What in the world is going on? I certainly hope that we get back on track soon.

What would be some of the more sophisticated defensive stats?
