Happy Jaret Wright’s birthday, I guess. Oh, heck, I have nothing, but the other thread was getting full.
According to Wikipedia, both Becket and Rasputin were killed on December 29, always with the understanding that it’s hard to say when Rasputin was actually dead. This means something, I’m just not sure what.
It means that either The Mad Monk was the baddest bad-ass of all times, or he was not of this earth.
Can Kentucky win a bowl game? Um, go Cats.
I wonder what JS thinks about trying to add Armas or Thomson as a #5 guy
How bout Kentucky?
Wow is that a perpetual SEC cellar-dweller destroying an ACC power (ok, almost an ACC power)? Way to go Cats!
csg-
If we couldn’t afford Glavine for 1yr/6M, I really don’t think we’ll spend money on one Thomson. Armas we just can’t afford.
Speaking of the Mad Monk, I wonder what Al Hrabosky’s doing these days?
Ububba,
Do you think you could do all Braves fans a favor, and look up Omar Minaya, and take him out and get him really drunk, and talk him into signing Weaver to a 7 year 120 million dollar deal. We’re counting on you.
Alright, win #1 for the SEC.
So…let’s go Cocks.
Justin,
Zito notwithstanding, I don’t think Omar needs any help when it comes to overspending. He’s like the rich girl going to the mall with daddy’s credit card.
I feel good about South Carolina’s chances now that I find that Houston’s QB is named Kevin Kolb.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!11!!! CUZZIN KEVEN WILL DISTROY THE GAEMCOKS! HAHAHA, GAMECOKS, THETS FUNNEY!!!!!!!!!!!!11111
I know about the no politics rule, but this is pretty big news. From Fox News…
Breaking News >> AP: Saddam to be Executed Before 10 p.m. ET, Top Iraqi Official Says
Eh, despising Saddam isn’t a partisan issue. Long may he rot.
Fox “News”? The very idea makes me snicker.
Go-o-o-o Cocks
good ole SEC defenses shining this year!!!
Spurrier tried to blow it, but that’s win #2.
Let’s see if the Dawgs can make it #3 tomorrow.
Let’s see if the Dawgs can make it #3 tomorrow.
Should be a good game. Looks like the Pac 10 will finish up 3-3, so I guess 5-4 from the SEC gets bragging rights.
I haven’t got this whole rooting for your conference mates down yet. No one was happier to see Dorrell get embarrassed than me.
I always root for the SEC, with 2 possible exceptions: Kentucky basketball & Florida at anything (I try not to consort with evil). For those instances, rooting interest is determined on a case-by-case basis.
“Saddam to be Executed Before 10 p.m. ET, Top Iraqi Official Says”
Fox News: Troy King to pull the lever.
(I couldn’t help it.)
In all seriousness, I’m glad he’s going to be hung. Good riddance. I like the Iraqi system of one appeal and then quick execution. It’s better then the “twenty years on death row paid for by John Taxpayer” system most states have now.
#18. You got it, Ububba. My two favorite teams are the Dawgs and whoever’s playing Florida.
I think only Dan and I got that joke, and it’s skirting the no-politics line, but it’s worth it.
Bill-
Rough year. Your favorite teams are only 9-19. 😀
See above for the effects of jet lag on my math (4+12=19?)
Saddam’s dead as a doornail, and no one in the world’s weeping. Here’s hoping tomorrow will be better than today.
how do you blow a 31 point lead in football?
I am a hokies fan, and I can honestly say that I think the VT defense can shut down UGA’s offense. The question is can we score any points? It could end up being like a 19-14 game or something
beedee,
Either you’re the Houston Oilers or the Minnesota Golden Gophers, that’s how. 😀
or maybe the braves with our old relief staff
give credit where credit is due – my Northwestern Wildcats blew the biggest lead in the history of college football earlier this year against Michigan State.
LETS GO! HOKIES! LETS GO! HOKIES!
Since the bowl is in Atlanta, Brandon Orr will channel Pete Orr’s scrappiness and have 200+ rushing yards. Hokies win, 31-6.
What is it with the lack of top 10 teams playing each other. These matchups have been terrible. Bowl tie-ins suck.
I wonder if the Braves are one of the six teams.
After initiating contact with his representatives after the Braves non-tendered Reitsma earlier this month, the Marlins indicated an offer would be forthcoming.
Six teams have submitted bids for the right-hander, but the Marlins are not one of them.
“The situation is not closed yet, but we’re down the road with at least two or three teams,” said Mike Paolercio, Reitsma’s Cincinnati-based agent. “We’ve had several different kinds of offers. We’re considering two or three one-year deals and two or three multi-year situations. Each one of them offers different advantages and disadvantages.”
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-spmarlins30dec30,0,5540728.story?coll=sfla-sports-front
I wonder what some of the wonderful, smart Braves scouts are telling JS about Reitsma, if that is the case. >.>
beedee,
I’ll just whale on Reitsma, thank you.
Sam,
Whale away but let’s not for forget the many tag team efforts we were forced to endure the past two years while JS sat on his hands. Oh well there’s always Yates!
I realize we issue a lot criticism here, but i really feel for a lot of the baby braves that got called up in 05 and did some remarkable stuff only to have unrealistic expectations placed on them the next season. Frenchy, Devine and Davies all made amazing contributions in 05 but really should have been sent back down to grow.
I’m not going to stand for this JS “sat on his hands” bullshit anymore.
I don’t think he’s stupid and/or lazy. I think he’s old-fashioned like Bobby Cox and believes that anyone at all can be a good player given the right enviroment. But “sitting on his hands” implies that he makes no effort to better the Braves whatsoever. Sitting on his hands means he DOES NOTHING.
i’ll agree that JS hasn’t had a lot to work with as far as free cash goes and that it’s been truly miraculous that the braves have stayed as competitive as they have the past few years.
That said, he’s need to trade for new ownership!
But what will become of all the photographs of Reitsma in a Braves’ uniform on his charity website if he leaves?
http://www.chrisreitsma.org
Moreover, what will become of The Pictures, which he almost certainly has?
Simple. They’ll be inherited by Pete Orr or Martin Prado, the brand-new Keith Lockharts.
I don’t think that’s fair to Prado, at least. If he were the new Lockhart, they would have given him the second base job instead of making him try to earn in against a superior hitter.
Good point. Shows what I know about the pictures system. 😉
… how about Tyler Yates?
i think frenchy has at least one, but yates has to have the negatives
“Glory glory to ol’ Georgia
Glory glory to ol’ Georgia
Glory glory to ol’ Georgia
And to hell with Va. Tech.”
Tyler Yates would seem to be the likely candidate. Or maybe some cruddy old veteran back-up catcher that Schuerholz signed instead of giving the job to the obviously deserving Brayan Pena. I’ll give Schuerholz more credit than that, I don’t see him shelling out a million for another year of Todd Pratt or a Pratt-like catcher, so I’d check Yates’ locker.
But Yates did lose that primary set-up job before he ever even had it…..
“Happy New Year,
Happy New Year,
Happy New Year,
Go Gators, Yea!”
See, I also can write poetry!
Around noon today, I was at work at a Best Buy near Jacksonville. I had never seen so many Georgia Bulldog fans in my life. I’m serious. Of course, I’ve never been to a UF-UGA game or anything, so that might be why. But still, there was a TON of Dawg fans.
Go Dawgs.
I can write a haiku:
Buckeyes gonna eat
Tasty gator sandwiches
It’s inevitable.
if only both teams could lose
Of course, inevitable is five syllables, but I would prefer “highly likely,” which is five syllables, but I think that’s more correct. How about that?
Wow, nice throw Stafford.
turn out the lights the party’s over…come on DAWGS!
GOOOOOO DAWGS!!!!!
@44
beedee, I know Frenchy had a -1.0 VORP and is only the third guy since 1972 to have one of those and 100+ RBIs, but really, do you want Gregor Blanco out there instead of him?
How the HECK did Georgia just score 28 straight points?! Can someone give me a synopsis or something? What the heck happened?
If you’re listening to ESPN, the answer is MOMENTUM.
Really, it’s been great defense by Georgia and Stafford living up to his billing. Georgia recievers have had like 9 drops, but aside from the INT, Stafford has been incredible.
I saw Stafford struggling in the first half badly, but yeah, I guess he stepped it up. How did they score so quickly? INTs and long passes or something?
I can’t believe I just rooted for Georgia. I have a lot of pride in the SEC, I guess. SEC is now 3-1, by the way.
How ’bout them Dawgs?
Okay, drop “It’s” from the last line.
I’m obviously a big Bama fan, but I really like Georgia. I don’t think there is a classier coach in the nation than Richt – did you see the interview after the game? From what I saw of Ga during the season(I didn’t see the Auburn game), I thought they would get blown away. Bobo did a good job of playcalling (he’ll make a great HC one day) and their 2nd half was awesome.
Georgia has a very young team and seems to be gaining a lot of momentum for next year. Congrats UGA. Keep it up SEC!
Yeah dude, how ’bout them Dawgs? I made a Georgia fan cringe today because I told him I was a Gator fan, but I like Georgia too. Of course, they must die when they play Florida.
I just read about Mark Richt just now too. The guy seems to be a really great guy. And yeah, I saw the interview too. That’s why I went and searched him on the internet.
Oh, and that was a SWEET play-action fake by Stafford. I gotta admit, it was nice.
Rob,
The Dawgs made some really big plays on defense. Va. Tech turned the ball over 4 times. Moses & Johnson put a big rush on the VT QB, they tipped passes, swarmed to the ball. Even though the Dawgs’ recievers dropped balls all over the field, they made enough big plays to win.
And, as someone mentioned above, Stafford grew up a lot in the second half. Just a sweet, sweet win.
sam,
i would just like to see him stop looking like he’s swinging at a pinata when he isn’t thrown a meat ball. i like frenchy, he just needs to mature.
Stafford is going to be ridiculous when he gets some people that can catch the ball. He has such a great touch and field vision. No wonder he was so highly recruited. The next three years are going to be great for the Dawgs. Plus, Ol’ Bobo has turned out to be a much better play caller than I ever would have expected. And Rob, you are so right, that play-action fake was just beautiful.
A great win for the program and the SEC.
Dear UAB,
Please keep Callaway.
Sincerely,
Mark Richt
Here’s another haiku to make up for that one:
After Spurrier:
You can’t spell “Outback” without
UT either, Phil
fUGa
Who will be the coach
Of the ‘Bama football team?
James Lawrence Mora.
Oh, let’s not.
His alma mater calls–and the Pac-10 is the one place Mora could go and actually improve the quality of play….
Nice typo–actually in Istanbul, but maybe I am just bull…To go back to the post, I don’t know if Rasputin were ever here, but he would have done alright–in life or in death.
Happy New Year! Best Wishes for 2007!
The Pirates remain intensely interested in trading for Atlanta first baseman Adam LaRoche, but they continue to have no answer for the Braves’ wish for a leadoff-hitting type in addition to closer Mike Gonzalez. The Pirates’ only player in that mold is center fielder Chris Duffy, but they believe they have no replacement if he is dealt.
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06365/750307-63.stm
Also, he sucks.
Though, if he ever got thrown out of a game I could call him “Duffy, the Umpire Baiter”.
I blame Glennon for my hangover right about now.
I hadn’t watched VaTech all season until last night. But if that was any indication, the Hokies were a cinch top 10 team this season with a decent QB.
Glennon killed the Hokies, as did their O-line, which didn’t seem to be able to block anybody.
Looks like the Pac 10 will finish up 3-3, so I guess 5-4 from the SEC gets bragging rights.
I wasn’t aware bragging rights between these conferences were up for grabs. One is clearly and in every way superior to the other.
I love bowl games, but for Indiana University grads, it’s not much of a holiday.
They last time we had a nationally recognized team, we got run over by the USC Trojans. Led by star tailback O.J. Simpson.
I guess we can still be proud that our professors perfected the first Breathalyzers!
David O’Brien: Chris Reitsma will not be a Brave in 2007 and Kelly Johnson likely second baseman.
http://www.ajc.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/ajc/braves/entries/2006/12/31/reitsma_leaving.html#comments
Dan,
That’s very encouraging news. I’d like to see what Johnson can do at second base.
Happy new year everyone… have a fun and safe evening.
Happy New Year.
And here’s to a big SEC day tomorrow. All 3 teams will start between 11 am & 1 pm tomorrow. Go Vols, Go Hogs & War Eagle.
The latest Saban/Bama drama:
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2715745
Roll Tide.
I think the chances of Saban leaving the Phins are still pretty slim. Funny thing is the odds are probably a little better than they were two weeks ago.
Huizenga said he would be “shocked” if Saban wasn’t his coach next year. And Nick is very loyal to him, so we’ll see.
I’d say there’s about an 11.9% chance he’s the HC at Bama next year.
The only team I follow closer than the Braves is the Dolphins. I think the odds are much better than 10% – right now I would say that it is 50/50. If he was named the coach before Elvis’ birthday, it would not surprise me one bit.
happy new year everybody
Happy New Year!
