There are too many rumors now about Scott Linebrink and in the past involving Wilson Betemit for it to be just a rumor. Either the Braves really want Linebrink or the Padres really want the Braves to take Linebrink.

2nd Half of Pitcher A in 2006: 33 G, 1-2, 33 IP, 41 H, 18 R, 11 BB, 26 K, 4.64 ERA
You could look at it that way, or you could say:
ERA through 7/22: 2.70
ERA on 7/22 and 7/23: 32.40 (6 ER in 1.2 IP)
ERA from 7/24 on: 3.29
Either way is correct — I just wanted to point out that he was very bad for two days, but consistently good otherwise.
Linebrink has a 2.74 ERA since 2003, and has been durable. And he’s not a middle reliever — he’s the 8th inning guy for a team that employs Trevor Hoffman to pitch the 9th. He’s far better than any non-closing reliever has been for this team in several years. He’s 30, but that’s not significant, because we wouldn’t be signing him to a 5-year contract or anything.
I can understand an argument that Linebrink isn’t worth Giles. But to denigrate Linebrink’s performance is wrong-headed — he’s consistently been a top-shelf reliever for 4 years. I don’t know what more you’d need to see to know that.
Linebrink is pretty darn good…especially when compared to what we currently have. If it takes Marcus to get him, get it done.
(Of course, if we can get more, that’s great. But if news goes down that we swapped Gilly for Linebrink straight-up, I’ll be happy.)

Thats great if we get Roberts we’ll probably have the oldest left side defense in baseball. Renteria 31 (so they say), Chipper 34, and Roberts 35. That’ll also be $15 Million, between Chipper and Roberts, and we wont get more than 110 games from either one of them. Money well spent I guess…(sarcastic).

A guy that plays for 75 innings or so for an above average everyday player. Great trade. Your lineup of 2b wannabes is suspect at best.
Prado – what based on his stellar year at Rome?
Aybar – looked great in the PCL…….just like everyone else in the world.
Orr – yeah right.
Johnson – he’s a left fielder now for a reason. Glenn Hubbard is good but really …….
I know that Giles is gone. But if all we get is Scott Linebrink then John Schuerholz is on crystal meth.
Please ask the Cubs what they got for all that high priced middle relief they paid for….or the Reds what they got for 2 good position players. The best teams build their bullpens on the cheap. 2005 was a bad experience for the Braves but 2002, the year that we led the league in ERA with the likes of Hammond, Holmes, Grybowski, and Remlinger is still fresh in my memory.
sansho1
on November 15, 2006 at 8:46 pm
The Cubs are idiots — they spent over $20 million on their bullpen last year. They had 5 guys each making between $3 and $5 million last year. We’re not talking about anything like that. It’s not Giles for Linebrink, it’s Giles for Linebrink plus $4 million. Linebrink will make $1.75 million this year. Other than Wickman, nobody else under contract in the pen is even making a half-million. Can we at least spend a little money shoring up by far the weakest AND by far the least-paid aspect of the team?
Nobody should ever use the Braves 2002 season as a blueprint for anything — in fact, you could say that organizational arrogance that we could repeat that titanic fluke is one of the main reasons we’re in the state we’re in. In fact, I just said it.
Rob Cope

Aybar will be fine leading off for us. His defense should be at least as good as Giles’ as will his OBP. The only hit we might take is in the SLG department, and I’m willing to trade .050 SLG% from my leadoff hitter for a quality setup guy and $4 million.
Oh, and considering Aybar is likely to improve (being as he’s just 24) while Marcus’s numbers should be slipping below his career average (since he’s over 30), it might not be a bad gamble.

Obviously no one knows what will go down with the trades, but I like what I’m hearing so far. A good setup man is a big piece of the bullpen and it’s something we’ve lacked for a long time. Hopefully we can get more than Linebrink for Giles, but unloading salary isn’t a bad thing and the guys we have waiting in the wings at 2nd will be adequate I believe. I’m not sure about Roberts, but he would be a big improvement over Langerhans IF he has a year like last year. I like Langerhans, but I’m not sure if he’ll ever be much more than a 4th outfielder.
The most encouraging part to me is that it seems like JS is looking for starting pitching. Mac mentioned that when we got Maddux, it could be argued that we didn’t need him. I will continue to say that the proneness to injury for at least 3/5 of next year’s projected starting rotation makes getting a quality starter a must – right up there with bullpen help and way above getting a leadoff man.
Btw, incredible segment on the 44 top Atlanta Braves Mac. I started following the Braves seriously just after Aaron broke Babe’s record. After reading your write-up, I am more convinced than ever that Aaron was/is a very underrated player. I’m sure that Aaron had to endure a lot of racial prejudice, but I can’t imagine anyone going through what he did with much more class and dignity.

They’re brothers, IIRC.
Frank Thomas — 2/23 with the Blue Jays. That’s just insane.
I don’t think so. Thomas can clearly still hit, and for a player with his offensive production the per year isn’t bad. The important thing was to not get tied into him past age 40, which is where he’s liable to hit the wall.
Toronto understands that they’ve gotta spend some smart money in that division if they hope to make the post-season, and I agree that Thomas could be a short-term offensive solution for them. If he can DH without falling apart, he may be “worth it.”
BTW, did anybody notice that Toronto finished ahead of Boston last year?

Words regarding Peavy:
“Team and industry sources say that the Padres are concerned about Peavy’s constant shoulder flare-ups and might trade him before he becomes expensive. Officially, general manager Kevin Towers says, “I don’t see Jake Peavy going anywhere this winter.” Peavy posted a career-high 4.09 ERA in 2006 and won just 11 of his 25 decisions. The 25-year-old should be entering his prime, but his ongoing shoulder problems leave room for concern.”

“I heard about Salty’s weight in the AZL. Talk among scouts that his reactions were very slow.”
“I worry about what I call Young Catcher Stagnation Syndrome in cases like this. A lot of promising young catchers see their development stall in their early 20s…nagging injuries, sometimes weight gain, etc., drag their bats down. I’m concerned that this may be happening to him.”
Sell high? Or is Salty another Adam Wainwright?

That was be an AWSOME trade for the Braves. Peavy’s got game. The rotation is instantly the best in the NL East and arguably the best in the NL. The bullpen is instantly better, too, with a solid closer and 8th inning guy and a ton of strong, young arms fighting for the remaining spots.
I really don’t think it’ll happen, though. The Pads would have to be terrified of Peavy’s elbow or just think he’s about to collapse for this to happen, and I’ve heard nothing to that effect.
And let’s not forget that we don’t need Salty. His value has slipped since last year and I’ve heard rumblings that he might be on the decline. So yeah. Awsome deal for the Braves.
Oh, and Marcus was 28 last year, so he’ll be 29 for the 2007 year. My bad.

I call bs on this rumor…there’s just no way we can get arguably the best pitcher in the NL for three guys who are almost assuredly on the decline. If the Pads are willing to deal Peavy, I think about 28 teams other than the Braves could beat that offer.
If the Padres do get Barry, it’ll help suck his numbers down a little: according to Rosenthal, “His numbers at pitcher-friendly Petco Park, however, aren’t as impressive – a .185 batting average and .769 OPS, with only three homers in 65 at-bats.”

I am hardly surprised that the Braves would go after Peavy. They have long tried to get and sign players from the South. This makes good sense as it is cost effective, but it could mean that they acquire players (such as Hudson and Hampton) who can be difficult to unload.
I hate to give up Salty, but the Braves must strengthen their starting pitching. Parting with Giles and HoRam is not very difficult…

#71 – Jay it was mentioned in the forum at MLB rumors.
The Red Sox aren’t through yet. Multiple sources say they are set to sign free-agent outfielder J.D. Drew, the Phillies’ old amigo, for a 4-year, $48 million deal. (I guess he wasnt really happy w/ the Dodgers.)
Mets officials internally discussed the idea of offering Lastings Milledge and reliever Aaron Heilman to the Blue Jays for Vernon Wells,. (Sorry dont think the Blue Jays will fall for that one!)
The Braves are among several bidders for the services of free-agent left fielder/leadoff man Dave Roberts, who hit .293 with 13 triples, 49 stolen bases and a .360 on-base percentage for San Diego. A person familiar with negotiations said contract terms — three years and close to $5 million per season — were past a point where the Braves felt comfortable in dollars or contract length for a 34-year-old who’s never played 130 games in a season and totaled 115 or fewer in three of the past four. (GOOD!)

I think that’s a huge mistake for the Red Sox, unless Boras simply wouldn’t have it any other way (in which case I’d be shocked that the deal got done this quickly). In today’s Hardball Times, David Gassko claims that Matsuzaka would be worth $22M over 3 years or $49 over 4 years, once the posting fee and possible Japanese revenue streams are taken into account.

Jerry Crasnick is evidently reporting on ESPN Radio that Peavy for Giles, Salty, and Horribleratios is “close”.
Jake Peavy to the Braves?
Also from Jerry Crasnick on ESPN radio, also no link yet: the Padres are close to sending Jake Peavy to Atlanta for Marcus Giles, Horacio Ramirez and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. This would make some sense: Schuerholz has never been afraid to deal top-drawer prospects (of which Saltalamacchia used to unquestionably be, if he isn’t after a weak 2006 at the plate) for impact players. And this does a lot of things for the Padres: fill their 2B hole, replace Peavy (kind of), and put another potentially solid catcher in the system now that George Kottaras is property of Boston. It also allows the Padres to keep Scott Linebrink or use him in a trade with the Red Sox.
For the Braves, it tells you that Schuerholz is going for it: one season out of the money isn’t going to put him on some rebuilding regimen. I don’t Peavy is enough to put them back up with the Mets, but he could certainly make things more interesting.
I would prefer another reliever or a decent prospect to get thrown in the deal, but I can’t complain if we get Peavy, he’s an ACE, no doubt about that.

I don’t understand the idea of just letting Andruw walk without getting anything from a future perspective. I do understand how valueable he will be to have around next year. His bat and defense would be next to impossible to replace short term. Maybe if we get a WS next year, that will be payment enough for losing him after the season.
Peavy led the league in strikeouts in 2005 and was second in last year. His IP doesn’t look out of line. I’d love to get him. No more finesse guys! Unless it’s bringing Maddux or Glavine back!
Not trying to rain on the Peavy parade, but there seems to be some concerns about his pitching shoulder …………. Peavy has said his shoulder was “killing” him in May, leading him to get a second medical opinion, from Angels doctor Lewis Yocum in June. In July, Peavy consented to the first shoulder MRI and cortisone shot of his career.
The right-hander entered the year with a career ERA of 3.33, then posted an ERA of 4.09, the highest of any Padres starter who made the playoff rotation. Scouts have speculated that Peavy’s high-torque delivery is taking its toll on his arm. Peavy said pitching in the World Baseball Classic also contributed to late-season fatigue.
Giles, Horam, and Salty… all three hav no place on the team this year.. Ill take my chances with his shoulder I guess!

Obviously, if this is the Peavey of 2005, it would be a great deal for the Braves. But the Padres must have some significant concerns about his health; trading a 25-year old ace for a solid but not great second baseman, a mediocre starter, and a prospect doesn’t make much sense. And, if you recall, the Braves knocked the crap out of Peavey in San Diego last year, so clearly something was wrong. I’m a pessimist by nature, but I hear echos of Tim Hudson, circa 2005. ON the other hand, it’s probably not a trade that would really hurt the Braves, unless Salty becomes a star. Giles is probably gone anyway and HoRam is pretty much a 4 or 5. So, all things considered, if this rumor is true, go for it.

Down West End a bit, yeah. Just look for the Jiffy Lube and Logan’s and try to park behind there. Campus (and the stadium) aren’t too far from there, and it’s a pretty easy exit from there, too.

I don’t get ESPN radio so I don’t know. It does seem to good to be true. But mlbtraderumors.com put up something about ESPN radio saying some rumor and a few hours later it happened.
Anyone know what time these meetings end with the GMs today?

Good thing to think about is that, if we have $5 million to throw at Dave Roberts than we should have enough to make Glavine a serious offer. Plus he’ll get a $3 mill buyout from the Mets. Everything is looking somewhat positive right now

Today is the last day of the GM meetings. Schuerholz said he’d probably “make a trade or two” and today said he was “determined to get something done.”
I know it’s November, but it sure sucks that every other team is seemingly doing something and the Braves are just kinda sitting there.
“I just checked into that Peavy rumor and was told it was not happening and was not even discussed by the two teams, at least not in that form _ Giles, Horacio and Salty for Peavy. I trust the source who told me, and he would definitely know.”
With Peavey off the market, the Braves have to wait until another southerner is available–preferably someone who has passed his peak and is on the downside so he can sign him to a big deal that hamstrings the team for years to come. Isn’t that the current modus operandi?

well I guess, if the meetings ended today, it would be safe to assume that we got nothing accomplished. I wish sometimes we could get some insight into whats going on.
Hallelujah.
This is almost better than YouTube.
This is why the internet was invented. Well, this an porn.
2nd Half of Pitcher B in 2004: 28 G, 0-3, 24 IP, 24 H, 16 R, 10 BB, 10 K, 4,88 ERA
Pitcher A is Scott Linebrink, guess who pitcher B is.
Not fair. Pitcher A is OLDER than Pitcher B was in those two years.
No idea. Dan Kolb?
Yeah, I guess it is Dan Kolb…at first I thought it was Reitsma
The soon-to-come subscription P.I. looks P.I.M.P. Looks like it would be able to return the answer for who has the most errors by a lefty-hitting righty-fielding shortstop on a Tuesday.
I’ve been yearning for splits and logs on B-Ref. Now all we need are minor league stats. I have a feeling that those will come, in time. The era of having to check B-Ref, RetroSheet, and the Cube for various separate pieces of information will soon come to an end.
Why would you want to check Minor Leagues stats?
Scott still has good K rates and is giving up less hits than innings pitched.
The internet was also invented to destroy celebrities lifes and to make others come out of the closet(Do you hear me Mr. Cruise?)
Who is Sean Forman?
Why would you want to check Minor Leagues stats?
Because I am interested in knowing who the up and coming stars are.
Because I am interested in knowing what the Braves future will look like.
Because I enjoy going to minor league games and what to know about who I watch.
Because I am a baseball fan.
Pitcher B is crappy, whoever he is.
Hey badaman I’m sorry if I offended you and I will apologize in advance for what I’m about to say. That sounded like a politician campaign. You should run for governor or maybe President.
Pitcher B is Dan Kolb. 😉 Sure, it probably wasn’t fair to do that, but it was the first thing I thought of.
ESPN is reporting that Trent Green will start Sunday vs Raiders.

The Braves are bidding for Dave Roberts…that’s one FA which I hope the Braves will lose the bidding…
http://www.ajc.com/braves/content/sports/braves/stories/2006/11/15/1116gmmeetings.html
I’m on the sansho1/ububba/csg bandwagon.
Thanks but no thanks, I would rather have Orr, Aybar, or Johnson leading off for us
Thank god….Shaun Alexander is expected to start this Sunday….maybe that’ll spark some excitment in my dull fantasy teams….most likely not.

Braves top 20 prospects for 07
damn, there is a nasty game on ESPN2….very wet and muddy
if braves get roberts, will they be able to keep giles? the lineup would be pretty solid with needed speed at the top (with giles at #2, it would mean some extra base hits to his favorite hole):
roberts
giles
chip
druw
laroche
renteria
francoeur
mccann
I agree with sansho1. For every Braves 2002 season bullpen that succeed while building on the cheap, there’s 10 bullpens that failed miserably trying to do so.
Giles is only 27.
Anybody know if Cory Rasmus (prospect #18 in the list) is related to Colby Rasmus? Colby is supposed to be legit for St. Louis, so the bloodline could be a positive.
I would definitely do the Giles, Salty, and Horam for Peavy and Linebrink! I dont see that one happening by any means
Anybody know if Cory Rasmus (prospect #18 in the list) is related to Colby Rasmus?
I would be happy to see Linebrink join the Braves–he would be an asset to our bullpen. I assume that Giles would leave after next season, so I think that it is a pretty good trade. Of course the fact that so many people have talked about it for so long makes me believe that it will never happy.
I am not all that excited about Roberts either…
I can say what is the worst signing in this offseason already:
“The Chicago Cubs and backup catcher Henry Blanco agreed to a $5.25 million, two-year contract Wednesday with an option for 2009.”
THAT’S CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No wonder DeRosa just got rich as well!
The Blue Jays just called me and offered me a two year $25 million deal to pitch out of the bullpen. I think I am going to wait and see what the Cubs offer.
I guess that I am in the minority here, maybe except for bamadan on the Giles for Linebrink thing. I truly do understand that Giles is a goner but I guess that our point of disagreement is on how much we should get for him. A guy that will give you a whopping 75 innings ain’t a fair swap, however I respect everyone else’s opinion and will make a fearless prediction: some of you will be typing L****b***k in your posts next season. Another fearless prediction: we won’t even get Linebrink for Giles…..God help us it will be something worse.
If we sign Dave Roberts, I’ll throw up.
Just read the Thomas story. I can’t even fathom what some dumbass team, oh that desribes the Cubs, are going to pay Soriano. No wonder JD Drew walked away from 33 million dollars. Boras no matter what you think of him has an uncanny knack for smelling GM stupidity in the air. What is crazy is that the Blue Jays may be getting a good deal for Thomas.
http://www.minorleagueball.com/story/2006/11/16/1416/8517
I hope this rumour has legs!! It would be an awesome trade for us.
I proposed something very similar in a thread earlier 🙂
Words regarding Peavy:
“Team and industry sources say that the Padres are concerned about Peavy’s constant shoulder flare-ups and might trade him before he becomes expensive. Officially, general manager Kevin Towers says, “I don’t see Jake Peavy going anywhere this winter.” Peavy posted a career-high 4.09 ERA in 2006 and won just 11 of his 25 decisions. The 25-year-old should be entering his prime, but his ongoing shoulder problems leave room for concern.”
Another Hudson?! Well, at least Peavy is younger…Are the Braves collecting Alabama talants now?
Words from John Sickels on Salty:
My bad.
@46 No Way! too good to be anything close to the truth.
I don’t care what anyone says, if we can get Jake Peavy……do it!!!!!!!!!!
I call bs on this rumor…there’s just no way we can get arguably the best pitcher in the NL for three guys who are almost assuredly on the decline. If the Pads are willing to deal Peavy, I think about 28 teams other than the Braves could beat that offer.
Another Padres rumor, this time with Barroid Bonds:
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6176772?FSO1&ATT=HMA
I would not trade Salty at this point. He has too much upside potential to be a throw-in prospect in any deal.
But we have this guy named Brian McCann, and Salty’s numbers weren’t that good last year.
Yeah,
Salty would be a backup for B-Mac….Pena can do that for us. Trade Salty now, before anything else knocks down his value.
If the Padres do get Barry, it’ll help suck his numbers down a little: according to Rosenthal, “His numbers at pitcher-friendly Petco Park, however, aren’t as impressive – a .185 batting average and .769 OPS, with only three homers in 65 at-bats.”
agree
The Phillies want Wes Helms as their third baseman for the next two years?
If we could get Peavy and Linebrink (and rid of HoRam) then I’m all for it. I mean, Peavy is a risk, but we’re not gonna win the division next year without taking some risks.
God, Pat Gillick is turning into Ed Wade.
This ain’t gonna happen.
The Padres need young cathers and a good secondbaseman. I could see this going down. Plus HoRam is from the west coast and might do well in that canyon ball park. I think it would be a good deal for both sides.
Add me to the group that doesn’t want Dave Roberts. Last year was a career year for him. He’s a leadoff man that’s never scored more than 80 runs in his career. Put Kelly Johnson or Aybar in that spot. We’ll be fine.
“This ain’t gonna happen.”
Exactly.
Yeah, the Braves may get Linebrink, but they’re not getting Peavy, period.
Rotoworld says the Braves tried to sign Dave Roberts, but he wants at least five million a year and three years on his contract, and the Braves aren’t going to do it.
Good. The Braves are better off spending money on pitching.
Dan, Amen. I’m glad we wouldnt offer a 34 year old a 3 year contract. He wont play more than 120 games in any of his final seasons. I’m glad we passed.
Although, if we had him our left side of Chipper, rent, and Roberts could probably make up a decent left side for an over 30 softball team
Has anyone found anything else on “peavy to the braves”????
Only thing I can find is a message board.
Aybar will be fine leading off for us. His defense should be at least as good as Giles’ as will his OBP.
I had thought Abar playd some 2B for us, but baseball-reference doesn’t seem to support that. So if the Braves never gave Aybar any time at 2B, not even an audition, are we to conclude that they’re not sold on his defense over there?

(GOOD!)
rumor from Fox Sports…The Giants have three-year offers of $30 million on the table to outfielders Juan Pierre and Gary Matthews Jr. They won’t sign both.
ummm.. Pierre or Matthews. I think I might get rid of one of those offers very quickly!!!
“Mets officials internally discussed the idea of offering Lastings Milledge and reliever Aaron Heilman to the Blue Jays for Vernon Wells”
The Blue Jays cannot be that dumb.
I’m not sure that’s such a bad deal for the Blue Jays. Maybe not quite good enough, but probaby just another pitching prospect short.
Wells is gone after next year anyways, whereas they’d have Milledge for quite a while and Heilman is pretty good (and versatile). I don’t know why the Mets would make that deal though, unless they just really thought next year is their year.
They have discussed it and I dont know why they havent offered it, that would be the steal of the century. No way that happens. There’s a better chance that our starting rotation would be Smoltz, Clemons, Glavine, Peavy, and Willis, before that would happen. Is it me or are the blowing Milledge’s potential up way to high. Its quite humorous!
update…from MLB rumors…
Matsuzaka signed…3 yrs $45 million… Here’s the posting
Matsuzaka signed?
No link yet, but apparently ESPN radio in Boston is reporting that Daisuke Matsuzaka has been signed for $45 million over 3 years. I think that’s a huge mistake for the Red Sox, unless Boras simply wouldn’t have it any other way (in which case I’d be shocked that the deal got done this quickly). In today’s Hardball Times, David Gassko claims that Matsuzaka would be worth $22M over 3 years or $49 over 4 years, once the posting fee and possible Japanese revenue streams are taken into account.
just looking at it….
51.11 million + 45 million for 3 years = $96.11 million / 3 =
$32.03 million per year. A-Rod might even think that’s too much. I think he could be a bust. They could have signed Zito and Schmidt for that $$$
Man, these numbers getting thrown around are insane. Scott Boras is going to buy a medium-sized country when this is all over with.
Jerry Crasnick is evidently reporting on ESPN Radio that Peavy for Giles, Salty, and Horribleratios is “close”.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2006/11/jake_peavy_to_t.html
Hudson Part 2, or Maddux Part 2?
I don’t Peavy is enough to put them back up with the Mets, but he could certainly make things more interesting.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com
does anyone think that is alot for Peavy. I like it for Peavy and a good reliever (linebrink if possible)….
Smoltz
Peavy
Hampton
Hudson
James/Daviess
Pretty freakin good if you ask me…
Has anyone heard anything about how we are handling the Andruw Jones situation?
Yeah CSG,
I would prefer another reliever or a decent prospect to get thrown in the deal, but I can’t complain if we get Peavy, he’s an ACE, no doubt about that.
Josh all reports are that Andruw will be a Brave throughout 07 and we’ll lose him to FA. Dont really seeing JS trying to move him at this point.
I would like a reliever with that as weel, but Peavy is awesome
Jay, yeah I still like it, but it could be extra sweet
Okay Stu, I am going to the Tennessee-Vandy gaem. Any sugestions on where to park?
I think it’s a whole lot, but I think I’d do it if Peavy passes his physical. He’s a rare talent.
Just wait until Leo gets his hands on Peavy… Oh wait
Yeah that rotation is going to be great!!!
I think James has definitely proven himself to be a solid starter, Davies is either a spot starter or trade bait(Crawford???…TB wants solid pitching prospects, and Davies is one…just saying)
Plus if we do get Peavy, hopefully that will take off the pressure for Smoltz(not that he showed like he was under pressure) to carry the load and Hudson to be the #1 guy. Hopefully.
I think Peavy would be a solid 2-or great 3 guy. We would look good in a short serise
I think Andruw’s here at least until the trading deadline. If we’re not really in contention then, I can see us moving him for prospects. Otherwise, yeah, I think he’s gonna leave the Braves not via trade but via free agency.
jeeebus..this will be awesome…
right in keeping with what JS said about improving pitching.
Even if the trade goes all wrong in teh future, I won’t bitch about JS for 6 months if this trade goes through
Why the heck would we trade giles for a starter that gives 200 innings and 200 strikeouts for? Especially when we could have 75 innings of setup instead?
I’d be shocked if this were even close to the truth.
I’m only cynical because mlbtraderumors.com, although it seems to be the most popular, rarely gets anything right. They never post links until something’s up on espn.com for the entire universe to see, and it’s always “someone heard on the radio,” or “my source,” which usually ends up being just that team’s forum. I’ll believe it when I see it, and I hope Linebrink is still involved.
I don’t understand the idea of just letting Andruw walk without getting anything from a future perspective. I do understand how valueable he will be to have around next year. His bat and defense would be next to impossible to replace short term. Maybe if we get a WS next year, that will be payment enough for losing him after the season.
@89
The potential starting staff…the best-case scenario with that bunch…yowsa.
Alright, these rumors are obviously getting to me. I gotta wipe the drool.
BTW,
I think we can all rule out the LaRoche to the tigers thing(if everyone hasn’t already)…they signed Sean Casey for a 1-year deal.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2664598
#89..keep in mind Glavine hasnt signed w/ the Mets yet..
#104 – We might as well keep rolling w/ this while we can. Wipe a little more….
Smoltz, Peavy, Glavine, Hudson, Hampton…. or we can trade Hudson and let James climb on in
This has been a “potentially” great day to be a Braves fan!!! I’d be open for trading Hudson for LF/prospects….
I hate using the “P” word.
If we added Glavine…Holy Crap!!!
I think I would trade Hudson if we signed Glavine. He may be able to net us bullpen help and a left fielder.
Ububba, just keep drooling buddy.
Pro Sports Daily is also showing the rumor, maybe this is going somewhere.
http://www.prosportsdaily.com/forums/showthread.php?t=64732
The O’s and Jamie Walker agree in principle to a Three-year deal worth $11.5M.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2664466
Peavy led the league in strikeouts in 2005 and was second in last year. His IP doesn’t look out of line. I’d love to get him. No more finesse guys! Unless it’s bringing Maddux or Glavine back!
Alright, I’ve broken out the lobster bib.
I’m ready to break out the Champagne bottles
How soon before the deal is done?

I’m with you, ububba. I’ve already called friends and family to discuss the possibilities. I’m already so invested in this idea that, if it doesn’t happen, I’ll be devastated.
Smitty’s barber told me about this potential trade:
BAL gets: Hudson, Thorman
ATL gets: Ray, Patterson
Hmm about Peavy. His ERA was a function of babip this year..all his peripherals are in line with his previous two years.
And those peripherals are second only to Santana’s in terms of awesomeness.
Yeah, I agree that it’s a risk well worth taking. We wouldn’t be giving up much that’s of use to us for a potentially, very, very, very high reward.
Can I borrow your bib, ububba?
Stu
I am going to the Vandy game on Saturday. Where is a good place to park?
Why do the Padres want to trade Peavy? Is it injury concerns? I’d love for the Braves to get him.
I’m putting up tarps around my cubicle, so when it happens and the cork get s popped nothing will get ruined. Hopefully my boss wont notice the wet floor and me wearing goggles!
You guys are getting way, way ahead of yourselves…this is nothing but an unfounded rumor. ESPN Radio said no such thing. We may as well be speculating on how Johan Santana is coming over for Wily Aybar and Ryan Langerhans. PEAVY IS NOT BEING DEALT TO THE BRAVES (But I’d love to be wrong…).
Depends on how early you get there. If you’re not there super early and can’t get something on campus (which is really hard to do), I’d try parking around the Centennial Sportsplex, behind the Logan’s Roadhouse/Tower Records area. You know what I’m talking about?
True but even last year, he showed glimpses of what he is capable of…
May 11th: 7.0 IP 0 ER 13 Ks 2 BB
May 22nd: (against us) 7.0 IP 2ER 16 Ks 1 BB
June 23rd: 8.0 IP 1ER 9 Ks 0 BB
Aug. 22nd: 7.0 IP 0ER 7 Ks 1 BB
Sept. 2nd: 9.0 IP 1ER 14 Ks 2 BB
Obviously just a few of his good games.
Yeah, I thinks os. Is that close to Centinial Park?
Ronnie, dont be the person to bring us all down. We’ll just live with it when it doesnt happen. Lets just have fun with it in the mean time
Obviously, if this is the Peavey of 2005, it would be a great deal for the Braves.
Score prediction?
I don’t get ESPN radio so I don’t know. It does seem to good to be true. But mlbtraderumors.com put up something about ESPN radio saying some rumor and a few hours later it happened.
Anyone know what time these meetings end with the GMs today?
I say Tennesee 28 Vandy 17 (Vols pull away late)
Well ESPN Radio wouldn’t air that rumor nationally, but a local show on an ESPN Station might.
There is a football outside of Ohio on saturday?
Crasnick is a national guy, though. If he reported it, I’d think it would be national.
I think it might be a touch closer than that, although I expect UT to win. Crompton’s starting, right?
yeah its the biggest rivalry – Al vs Aub
It looks like Ainge is starting
Oh.
I’m so ready for next football season. I have high hopes.
And after last night, I’m ready for a new basketball season, too…
I’m also still very ready for Jake Peavy.
DOB says the Peavy deal isn’t happening … unfortunately.
I dont know if this will help…but there are some local ESPN stations on here..
http://streamingradioguide.com/streaming-radio.php?format=3&radio-format=Sports
“DOB says the Peavy deal isn’t happening…”
Oh well. That rumor was fun while it lasted.
Can you provide a link also?
Yes, please provide a link.
He’s right. Thanks for the info, mhr. This stings.
It’s at the bottom of his blog on acj.com.
DOB isn’t always right.
Good thing to think about is that, if we have $5 million to throw at Dave Roberts than we should have enough to make Glavine a serious offer. Plus he’ll get a $3 mill buyout from the Mets. Everything is looking somewhat positive right now
He says he talked to someone “in the know”; I believe him. This was, as many have said, too good to be true, anyway.
You know it’s a bogus rumor when it’s prefaced by “So and so said it on the radio”.
Today is the last day of the GM meetings. Schuerholz said he’d probably “make a trade or two” and today said he was “determined to get something done.”
I know it’s November, but it sure sucks that every other team is seemingly doing something and the Braves are just kinda sitting there.
From DOB,
“I just checked into that Peavy rumor and was told it was not happening and was not even discussed by the two teams, at least not in that form _ Giles, Horacio and Salty for Peavy. I trust the source who told me, and he would definitely know.”
And my heart sinks a little more… 🙁
The bib now goes into the dryer.
I thought tomorrow was the last day of the meetings, I guess well have another long offseason hoping something gets done!
Good news, I called my barber and head said:
“The Peavy deal is for real, JS told everyone to tell DOB it wasn’t for real.”
I nominate Smitty’s barber to be MLB Commissioner.
I didn’t talk to Smitty’s barber, but I’m pretty sure he also said something about the following deal:
LAAOA: K. Wood, J. Saltalamacchia
CHI: T. Jones, T. Hudson, S. Casey
ATL: H. Kendrick, E. Santana, J. Bonderman
DET: D. Lee, M. Prado
“I thought tomorrow was the last day of the meetings.”
David O’Brien, yes him again, said the meetings end on Thursday.
“I guess well have another long offseason hoping something gets done!”
Another offseason where the Braves’ biggest signing is someone like Todd Pratt and their biggest trade is for a Matt Diaz type player!
I love the thought of the Halos giving up Santana and Kendrick for Kerry Wood and Salty.
umm….did mlbtraderumors remove the Jake Peavy to Atlanta post????
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/
Smitty’s barber told me Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Will Startup for Chris Ray is going down tomorrow.
hahahahahahaha..yeah, it looks like they did…ain’t that a bitch.
Jay10, yeah I can’t get to it anyomore…
I guess they hate to be wrong…
With Peavey off the market, the Braves have to wait until another southerner is available–preferably someone who has passed his peak and is on the downside so he can sign him to a big deal that hamstrings the team for years to come. Isn’t that the current modus operandi?
mlbtraderumors.com is terrible.
#155 – I was on it just about 15 minutes ago and the last post on there was someone bashing their sight. The said something like “this sight at one time was useful, but now its nothing but hyped up rumors. Just like the fact that the Red Sox arent close to signing Matsuzaka and the Braves and Pads arent close in any talks much less for Peavy.”
If you notice, also the Matsuzaka post has also been removed now!
sight = website
sorry about that one
I guess our big moves this year will be to call up Brian Pena and not sign Brian Jordan or Chris Reitsma. We’ll have one FA signing and that will be D Ward
“I guess our big moves this year will be to call up Brian Pena and not sign Brian Jordan or Chris Reitsma. We’ll have one FA signing and that will be D Ward”
That’s probably what John Schuerholz is thinking when he talks about having “an active offseason.”
well I guess, if the meetings ended today, it would be safe to assume that we got nothing accomplished. I wish sometimes we could get some insight into whats going on.
this place died pretty quickly!
JS should come on here for a little open floor questions or something.
Jake Peavy rumor=dead
Website currently dies with it.
Mlbtraderumors are trying to defend themselves now….
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/
Some Braves and Padres fans should sue mlbtraderumors for emotional distress.
I wonder what these GM’s have been doing for the last 3 days. If you think about it, not too many exciting things have happened.
Golf?!?
JoshQ, try bowling.
