Talk about this football game, or whatever you want.
You know you have odd reading tastes when it strikes you that the Tatupu family has names that sound like transliterations from a syllabary. (MO-SI-TA-TU-PU, LO-FA-TA-TU-PU.)

Funny, I just got back from a 10-day vacation on the north shore of Oahu, just off the Kamehameha Hwy & I got pretty good at pronouncing names like Kamakawiwo’ole. So Tatupu & Polamalu aren’t that big a deal.
Nice catch by Hines there…
They’re actually really easy to pronounce, little syllables, no multiple consonants or vowels.
This is gonna make me mad if I dont find out, who was the first person to say Im going to Disneyworld!
Re: The Stones
Not bad for a buncha 60-year-old guys, but I did catch Keith wheezing once.
Run Willie Run!
Sweet!
Mike, that was just an ad of different guys rehearsing for their big moment…The real this doesn’t happen until the end of the game.
This is what I mean about the game spiralling out of control. The two teams are evenly matched, but there’s a good chance that the Steelers are about to turn this into a blowout. Holmgren made a couple of iffy play calls there, calls he likely wouldn’t have made during the season.
Yeah, I’ve seen this movie before.
And let’s not forget a couple iffy ref calls. I’d argue that the Seattle called-back TD was ticky-tack & the Pitt TD was bogus.
The answer on the Disneyworld question is Phil Simms.
The Seahawks might want to watch Hines Ward very carefully here.
Or not. Theismann’s just been beaten out for Worst Super Bowl Pass (Non-Yepremian Division).
Now we got a game.
You ain’t kiddin’. I think even Garo’s embarrassed for Roethlisberger on that one.
Fact is, Big Ben has been a big stiff in this game so far.
And now Cowher is showing very little confidence in Roethlisberger now. That 3rd & 4 call was lame.
Okay, Al Michaels just redeemed this game with the Five-Second-Delay joke.
What is that, the third big Seattle play taken back by a phantom call?
Y’know, I kinda don’t care who wins and, yes, that Hasselback pass was bad, but the refs are just rooking the Seahawks. That post-INT penalty was ridiculous.
And how do you like that? TD
These ref’s are really blowing alot of calls in the ‘biggest game of the year’. Still, you knew that the Steelers would run that ‘toss back to RandleEl, pass to Ward for a TD’, eventually.
If they don’t reverse this call, I’m flipping to the History Channel.
I was talking about who was the first person to say that after actually winning.
Mike,
It was Phil Simms.
Not a great Super Bowl, but congrats to the Steeler fans.
Well, I think the MVP of the game should have been Bill Levy and his crew. What a bad job of refereeing. They made themselves far too visible. Or, what the heck, no Steeler really stood out (Ward included), so let’s just give it to Tom Brady again.
The commercials were great this year, though. Especially the FedEx one with the dinosaurs and the cavemen.
I liked either the Budweiser Magic Fridge one or the mastercard macgyver one
I liked one of them the most, is what i meant to say
As a Steelers fan, I’ll say thank you! I’ll take them how we can get them. It wasn’t a great game, but it was close for a fair amount of the second half, which is saying something by Super Bowl standards.
The Seahawks should have won, anyway, and they would have done so if they hadn’t kept dropping passes and getting big plays called back on holding or pass interference. I swear, they must have had about 5 30-yard passes and two TDs called back on penalties. The Steelers weren’t that good, but they had luck, and them’s the breaks.
I hate it when they mix dinosaurs and cavemen. I am a paleontological fundamentalist.
Hines Ward was the only choice for MVP, actually.
Nobody was that good in the game (the QBs were pretty bad), but Ward caught 5 passes for 124 yards, one TD, & had 1 rush for 18 yards. Nobody else had any kind of numbers close to that.
Plus, I’m a UGA grad, so for me Hines’ MVP is the only saving grace of this game.
That makes 3 Dawg MVPs: Ward, Terrell Davis & Jake Scott.
I think we should give Big Ben credit for putting his shoulder into it and making some tough first downs. Wharever it takes.
I liked the commercial with the Bud Clydesdale with big dreams, who got a lttle help from his friends.
Ben had an awful game. The only other real candidate for MVP was Ike Taylor with seven tackles and an interception. It should also be noted that Parker’s one big play gave him a good line for the night.
The commercials were awful this year, too.
Big Ben had a QB rating of 22.5. He was 9 of 21 for 123 yards, 2 INTs, and 0 TDs. The worst winning QB performance in Super Bowl history. Congrats, Ben.
I was rooting for the Steelers, but they had this game handed to them by the horrible refereeing, Holmgren’s lousy play-calling, and the fact that Jerramy Stevens sucks and should soon have his butt handed to him by Joey Porter, whose comments I don’t condone but who turned out to be sort of right. Bogus PI calls, phantom holding calls, that total BS personal foul on Hasselbeck, the missed horse-collar tackle on Alexander…the list just goes on and on. Yikes. Someone needs to do something about this. It almost seemed like the game was fixed.
Aww, Jenny. The ref’s didn’t cost them the game. Seatle’s wideouts couldn’t make the big play when they had to. Jackson had those two passes (one for a touchdown) that he didn’t even make an effort to get his other foot in either time. Then there was the guy who caugh the TD but dropped like 4 passes. To top it all off htye had the worst clock managment at the end of the half and the game I ever saw.
Jenny, it’s kind of hard to imagine the game is being fixed against Paul Allen’s team…
Well, Mike Holmgren has made it to the Super Bowl with two teams, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t suck.
True, true, and true again. Holmgren’s coaching was pretty darned bad, and nobody on the Seahawks seems to know how to catch. They definitely shot themselves in the foot multiple times and dug themselves a big hole.
But it didn’t help that the refs dug the hole even deeper and then threw a grenade in after them. The officiating was just awful.
I was so damn emotional about Hines when they said his name as the MVP winner. I LOVED him in college but i cant say i ever thought he’d be winning a Super Bowl MVP someday if you asked me, God its almost a decade now, then
The officiating was quite one-sided, but, nonetheless, I think the Seahawks done most of the things they did. There were a few bogus calls, but a lot of the holding penalties looked legit. And the offensive pass interference call was a little blatant because he did it RIGHT IN FRONT of the referee.
Did what right in front of the referee? A tiny little pushoff? Steelers players were mugging Seattle receivers all night and nothing ever got called. If the call on Jackson was PI, a bunch of other ones should have been called as well. Same with the holding penalties. Technically, you could probably justify all of them, although the one that negated the catch at the 2-yard line looked phantom to me. But the Steelers did the same thing and worse and none of that got called. Also, the “low block” by Hasselbeck? Since when do you get penalized for tackling? He hit the ball-carrier, not a blocker! If that was a penalty, then it should have been a penalty when Roethlisberger did the same thing like 2 minutes later on the Randle El “gadget play.”
Anyway, my point is, call all of them or call none of them. None of this “call it only on the Seahawks” stuff. You can legitimize the penalties on them all you want, but then you have to look at where the Steelers weren’t called for the same things.
Not to be forgotten is the fact that Seattle’s punter had four chances to pin the Steelers deep, and kicked it into the end zone every time.
It wasn’t even clear that the receiver actually made contact. If that’s pass interference, then there are fifty pass interferences a game. On the key holding penalty (the one that called back the gain to the one and the inevitable go-ahead touchdown) the defender fell down on his own and wasn’t even touched, much less held. And the god-awful personal foul on Hasselbeck that set up the clinching touchdown was the first time anyone has ever been called for an illegal block for making a tackle.
Considering neither team played very well, you have to figure that there’s only so much you can do when the officiating appears to be so one-sided. Not saying that’s what cost Seattle the game, because they missed a great chance before that pick, but it wasn’t called both ways.
The Steelers got screwed far worse than the Seahawks did in the Colts game and still managed to win. I don’t have much sympathy for the Seahawks.
Although I could care less about football, I did find myself rooting for Seattle by the end. Neither team played great, but the Seahawks were the better team for most of the game. You can’t, however, beat the officials. By the third quarter, whenever Seattle did anything good, I would say, “I’m sure there’s a flag on the play,” and usually, there was. It sure seemed like the refs wanted to have a say-so in who won.
Actually, Mac, Hasselbeck wasn’t flagged for tackling Taylor, but rather for spearing whoever it was that was Taylor’s lead blocker on the return, in the process of trying to tackle Taylor. I know it looks bogus, and I’d never heard of the rule before this year, but Roethlisberger was flagged for the exact same thing in the Steelers/Colts regular season game, when the rule was first explained to me. So it is legit and, no, that wasn’t the first time it’s ever been called.
Folks, y’all can blame the officials if you want, but the Seahawks crapped the bed and didn’t deserve to win the game. The Steelers played less terribly and righfully won, in my opinion.
Holmgren and the Wideouts killed the Seahawks. If I were them I would go after TO. Seatle is not a major media market so he can’t get in trouble with his mouth and they are going to have cap space when Alexander leaves. IF they had a big time reciever last night they would have won by 14 points.
To steer the conversation toward baseball, might I suggest a low-cost, potential high-benefit solution for our LF spot? Richard Hidalgo is, as they say, available and probably not terribly expensive. Sure, he sucked last year, but his career line against lefties is .276/.357/.480 and he has a cannon of an arm. While both Langerhans and KJ didn’t have bad platoon splits last year, history suggests that this is unlikely to continue (most lefties hit around 20% better against RHP than they do against LHP according to Mickey Lichtman).
Sure, he could be Mondi 2.0, but we have plenty of options to fall back on if he sucks and it could pay off big.
Interesting. PrOPS predicts Hidalgo and Sosa to have almost identical numbers for next year (PredOPS= .760)
I’m still pissed that the Braves are paying HoRam and Sosa nearly $4.5 mil (together) with James, Davies, and Lerew available. I don’t mind keeping one (and I think you know which one I would want). Yet, we couldn’t even keep Farnsworth. If you’re going to overpay for something, overpay for something you need, like a bullpen arm.
I think we offered Farnsworth almost as much as the Yankees and told him he could close, but he chose a few dollars more and to be a set up guy. He just isn’t a big time pitcher and fears presure.
My understanding is that taking the tax situation into account between Georgia and New York, the offer was pretty much identical. Fransworth also proberly thought that the Yanks had a better chance of delivering him a ring …..
Jeez – what is going on today …. spelling is atrocious …. probably not proberly …… come on!
Maybe, but you could say the same about HR. I disagree with your assessment of Farnsworth. But even if I didn’t, I would still rather have given 100% of HR’s 2.2 mil to Farnsworth. Our bullpen needs help, we have plenty of 5th starters.
They are both chokers, but didn’t everyone in America know that Berkman was going to take Farns yard in that game? He always wilts under presure, the only diffrence between him and Kolb is that Farns throws harder and they go a lot farther.
Schuerholz said that with taxes, the offer to Farnsworth was in fact identical to the Yankees’. He walked anyway — and apparently didn’t even inform the Braves that he was.
Didn’t Furcal do that too? Leave w/o telling the Braves, or at least w/o giving the Braves a chance to counter-offer? Not that I would’ve wanted to pay him in excess of 13 a year (good gosh!), but shouldn’t JS be notified when somebody’s about to leave?
mac, you could accredit that type of behavior to lack of class, but I would go with lack of intelligence, especially from farns
I just can’t believe that you wouldn’t tell the GM of the team you are on that you are leaving! It is just plain rude. I’d want to hear both sides of the story but I’m more inclined to believe JS and KF
To bad Farns didn’t sign with the Mets.
Not to be picky, but neither Fransworth or Furcal were members of the Braves when they signed with their new teams. A little common courtesy would be nice, but it’s not like they left town without giving two weeks notice or something. I would think that if they had any desire to re-sign with the Braves, common sense would dictate that they give the braves one final chance to counter, so maybe they just wanted to move on.
I don’t believe for a second that Farnsworth turned down an identical deal to close for his hometown team in order to set-up for the Yankees. JS’s statements after the fact are not credible. The fact that Furcal, Todd Jones, and Farnsworth all were not signed due to “mis-understandings” makes me think this is just PR. It just doesn’t pass my smell test. But, I admit that I’ll throw out milk at the slightest whiff of trouble.
It could possibly be that they both knew that the Braves wouldn’t be interested in upping their offers. Plus as unrestricted FA’s they didn’t even have to speak to the Braves, so if they didn’t let them know what was going on, its pretty obvious they didn’t want to play in Atlanata anymore. So better off without them, is what I say.
For the record, Kyle Farnsworth in post-season:
10 G, 0-0, 11 IP, 9 H, 4 BB, 13 K, 9 ER, 7.36 ERA
The only success he had was 2.7 IP of O.00 ERA vs. ATL in ’03, (so like Reggie Sanders he kills the Braves whether or not he’s wearing their uniform.) His series vs. Fla & Hou were full-on disasters.
If I was going to get one at bat in a big league game, here are the pitchers I would want to face. I might get a walk or beable to close my eyes, siwng hard and hit one out.
Kolb
Benitez
Tavares
HoRam
Farnsowrth
Stanton
Felix Heradia
Alphonseca
Wakefield
Well I quite fancy getting slam off Devine …
There is no way i’d want to face benitez or farns no matter how crazy they are… they throw so freakin’ hard.
there was an article about an espn page two writer trying to hit an A’s prospect several years ago that was funny. the guy wasn’t even a great prospect, threw like 90-91, and the writer couldn’t even put bat on ball (as i’m sure i couldn’t). you really forget how amazing it is what these guys can do…
I’m good with google.
Here’s the link:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/print?id=1786784&type=page2Story
Apparently not that good – the link doesn’t work
Does for me.
Right so. Odd that cutting and pasting got me to a 404 page, but the link you posted did not. Interesting article though.
The pitcher in the article had a good K/9 rate for the M’s last year but gave up a ton of bombs. Still, I bet I couldn’t put wood to ball against Kolb (!!)
You do not need to swing Kyle, Kolb will walk you on four pitches!
Lively Ice hockey or Rugby make me turn into a scene of wild excitement. So, I’m not interested enough in football, but this time was different. I would like to add my own appreciation. Congratulations the Steelers!!!!!!!!!
As usual, b-rule says exactly what I was thinking.
