I don’t blame Cubs fans for acting this way. I was a lot worse this time last season. Still:
* The last time the Cubs scored fewer than 1 run in a three-game span: April of 1992, when they were actually shut out four times in a row by the Braves and Reds. The third game in that stretch was a complete game thrown by John Smoltz.
Hey, let’s make it four!
Actually, you were arguably worse just a few weeks ago.
I wasn’t that bad.
Anyone notice that the Braves now trail only the Natspos and White Sox for best home record in baseball? With today’s effort, they’re now half-a-game better than the Astros in that department. Does it seem to folks like the Braves have played particularly well at home this year?
“I wasn’t that bad.”
Perhaps not (though maybe you are supressing painful memories – such as the “There are many bridges near my house” post or the post that began “Just when you thought we’d hit bottom, the bottom opens up and shows a whole new level. I may vomit.“.
You were definitely more optimistic than many of the other commenters around here.
Classics of the genre, I say. Hard to write a more destitute sounding post than the last one quoted. I was a pretty low time, but the times the are a changin’
Okay, that was pretty bad. And I had a pretty bad one in late May. But nothing compared to May and June of last season, where I was ready to blow up the team and talking about next year already, just before the Oriole Game.
I have a post all ready for if the Braves end up shutting out the Cubs in the nightcap, by the way, but if that happens I doubt I’ll even have the energy to hit the Post button.
I’ve been known to go to bed early rather than deal with those.
So, is this game tonight now a “reverse-lock” game?
You’re right. We have no chance at all. This game is totally jinxed.
BTW, no offense intended Mac. The Braves had a pretty depressing stretch where they lost 12 of 17 (with some of the losses particularly heartbreaking).
It’s good to try and remember that teams (and players) are never as bad as they seem during a losing streak, and they are never as good as they seem while they are hot. It’s a long season, and one of Bobby’s best traits is that he keeps an even keel through good streaks and bad streaks.
There’s already been one today, why not two?
There is absolutely no way we’re winning this game. Everybody in the world (not just this site!) is very confident and therefore the team hasn’t got a chance. I predict we get blown out :-).
Fair points all the way around. I suppose Smoltzie is due for a bad start but this is a reeling Cubs team against one of the hottest & best pitchers in Baseball…I still LIKE our chances.
By the way…I agree with an earlier point. Bobby’s best trait is his even keeled personality.
I find it VERY interesting that while there is now some infighting going on with both the first place Red Sox & the first place Nationals (apparently, there is now an issue between Loaiza & shocker of shockers, Jose Guillen), the Braves clubhouse is as quiet as a mouse.
Let’s keep it that way. It worked wonders for my Spurs all they way to our third championship…would be nice if a serene clubhouse led to some post season success with all the younguns’ we have.
As far as we know, the clubhouse is quiet. The team is too classy to air the dirty laundry in the media, we may just not know about anything. And I think Jose Guillen is an overrated hotshot; he had a similar complaint last year even when his pitcher got booted for an intentional HBP in retaliation (Lackey or something?). FR doesn’t mince words, a strength and a weakness. This comes after Tomo Ohka’s diva performance and subsequent trade. I’d say there could be something brewing here…hopefully for us. All that said, our team has no hotshots. They get stomped down pretty quick. If it ain’t broke…
We will know the out come of this game by the third inning. We will kill them again, or we will get slammed.
It’s good to try and remember that teams (and players) are never as bad as they seem during a losing streak, and they are never as good as they seem while they are hot. It’s a long season, and one of Bobby’s best traits is that he keeps an even keel through good streaks and bad streaks.
Joel, that was so well stated that it deserves to be repeated. Fans (and I certainly include myself) tend to get way too high in wins and too low in losses. Bobby Cox, thank god, isn’t one of us — or even Larry Bowa.
