ESPN.com – MLB – Recap – Mets at Braves – 05/24/2003

The Braves showed Tom Glavine exactly what he’s missing, knocking him out of the game in the fourth after giving up six runs. The Braves added four more in the inning to make it 10-0, at a time when the Mets only had one hit — they wouldn’t get another until the seventh.

Gary Sheffield had fallen out of the league lead in batting average, but climbed back into it with three hits, including a homer and a triple, and is now at .367. (But Bobby pulled him before he got a shot at hitting a triple for the cycle.) Sheffield, Andruw and Javy all hit their twelfth homers, and Robert Fick his fifth. Barring injury or some sort of power outage by Furcal, the Braves’ eight regulars should all hit double figures in homers.

Horacio Ramirez ran into a spot of trouble in the first with a double and a walk, but after that threw five perfect innings in a row. He tired a bit in the seventh and allowed two runs, but it might have been his best outing to date anyway. Jung Bong gave up a couple of runs in the ninth, his second consecutive bad outing.

Maddux goes tomorrow, and he needs a good outing… In the ex-Braves department, Mike Stanton is hurting and was unavailable to pitch today. Rey-Rey Sanchez is on the DL, which is good for the Mets because his hitting has gotten even worse.
