ESPN.com – MLB – Box Score – Braves at Brewers
Tick… tick… tick… BOOM. The Braves basically sat on their hands for the first seven innings, their only run coming on a homer by Kelly Johnson, then broke out big time with eight seven runs in the eighth to overcome a 2-1 deficit, then added one in the ninth. The Braves loaded the bases on one-out walks to KJ and Harris, then an infield single from Renteria. McCann then doubled to clear the bases and gave the Braves the lead. Andruw doubled him home, then Francoeur singled him in to make it 6-2. The Braves got two more runs at the end of the inning on singles from Diaz and KJ.
Tim Hudson was sharp, going seven innings and allowing but two runs, the second on a two-out wild pitch in the seventh. He gave up six hits, all singles, walked only one, and struck out three. The Brewers never had a chance at a big inning and scratched out both their runs. Soriano allowed a solo homer to Prince Fielder — I won’t miss him at all — in the eighth, and Wickman mowed them down in the ninth.
The Braves had fourteen hits. Renteria was 4-5, KJ 3-4 with a walk. Chipper is still out and still in Limbo.
Hudson only 76 pitches for 7IP, pretty economical
Turnbow was positively Reitstacular in this game. Thank God he showed up.
Retistacular…..priceless
You know, I’m actually happy that Prince Fielder killed us, because it means that he can take Chase Utley’s place in my nightmares, and we play the Brewers a lot less often. He’s an absolute monster.
You know I would like to have Paul Byrd back, he is a good #3
he also has the Roy Hobbs windup, if you remember what it looks like
Giants beat the Mets 3-0. We’re back to within four games.
Prince Fielder checks under his bed each night for Todd Helton.
Todd Helton scares me everytime he steps up to the plate. More than Utley, Howard, Beltran, Reyers, Fielder or Bonds. Don’t ask me why.
That should read: “Reyes”.
Mac — the Braves only scored 7 in the eighth then tacked on another in the ninth. Not a big deal.
If it was not a big deal Bell Curve why did you write it then ?
Justin, I guess he wanted to point it out
Anything new about Alex being a lunatic ?
are you being a prick tonight?
Do you have a problem asshole ?
Jeez, guys, lighten up. It’s a good thing we won today, or things might really be tense… I prefer that my mistakes be pointed out so I can correct them, as I have.
Sorry Mac.
no problem here, but there is no point in trying to cause problems and trying to piss people off for noe reason
Hudson=stopper. Funny I thought that would be Smoltzies role.
we just have to start winning series again
Justin, my apologies
Orr > Cancer
I suppose 30-22 is a good place to be. That puts the Braves in the 92-win slot. I’d like to reel off some wins, though, take a few series in a row.
Zito’s curve was a whopper tonight. How ’bout another Giant win tomorrow…
Anyone see the trick A-Rod pulled on Toronto’s 3B? A 2-out pop-up between 3B & SS, A-Rod is running the bases between the two of them and he yells, “I got it!” The 3B pulls up, thinking the SS called him off—plop. Ball drops, a run scores.
Had to chuckle at that one.
That’s straight out of Major League II. Nice.
Good win. Not sure how I feel about ARod calling off the third basement. That’s kind of dirty . . . but I guess that’s suiting for a New Yorker.
the yankees need all the help they can get
heart-to-heart talk on my board
My fellow Braves fans told me McCann almost gulped down tears at 2B beacuse joy welled up in his heart.
According to the mlb.com article
Having surrendered the go-ahead run in the seventh inning of a pitchers’ duel on Wednesday, an angry Tim Hudson showed his frustration with a visible tirade in the dugout, clearing out some water bottles and kicking some clutter.
“I felt like my 2-year-old little boy right after he throws a tantrum for a minute,” Hudson said. “I felt pretty good after that.”
“It was a breaking ball out of the zone, and I just choked it off and bounced it,” Hudson said. “‘Mac’ was kicking himself for not blocking it, but I told him it was a tough pitch. I thought that was the ballgame. I couldn’t believe I was going to lose 2-1 on a wild pitch.
from the Mac’s recap “McCann then doubled to clear the bases and gave the Braves the lead.”
And then? Tim Hudson hugs catcher Brian McCann during the eighth inning on Wednesday afternoon.
Between what Rodriguez did today and what he did to Bronson Arroyo during the 2004 ALCS, maybe he really is A-Fraud.
I’m not sure either of these A-Rod incidences are “dirty”, per se. They are both jackass maneuvers, however.
In essence, he needs to watch it a little bit. He won’t be reprimanded, but he does run the risk of being widely thought of as a douche bag if he tries to pull too much more of that crap. While some people have that opinion of him already, I don’t think that’s necessarily the widely-held opinion in the baseball world. But it will be if he keep it up.
The best part was the Blue Jays reaction, though. If they hadn’t acted like a bunch of babies, I might have more sympathy for them. Staying in the dugout to stare at the Yankees as they went through their handshakes? Give me a break.
I got it A-Rod’Video
Weird week. Take 2 of 3 from Mets. Get swept by the Phillies. Take 2 of 3 from Brewers on the road.
What’s with us rocking the hell out of good teams like the Mets and Brewers (well they have a good record) and getting destroyed by the Phillies and Notionals? Stupid playing up/down to the competition.
have to say the a-rod bit is hilarious…just don’t bring that down here.
I agree Beedee…although I can see how the Blue Jays would be pissed off.
If I pitched for the Blue Jays; the next time I saw A-Rod I would put one in his ear.
Sun Tzu, the ancient Chinese military strategist, observed that all warfare involves deception; I am with A-Rod on this one. This is not a Kent Hrbek play–I like his will to win and end the Yanks’ slump.
Except that baseball is a game, not warfare. I wonder why the third out was not called on A-Rod’s intentional interference with a fielder making a play? Although runner interference is usually physical (e.g., A-Rod’s slap at Arroyo), I don’t think the rule is limited to physical contact.
Why do I find the Arod thing so funny? Sure, if I’m the Blue Jays I’m pissed. If I’m the Yankees I’m probably laughing it up.
Two Things:
I’d like to advocate complete shame-faced ballot stuffing for Edgar, for sure, and Diaz. I don’t hold any illusions that Diaz will start, but I think it would be a great tribute to see his name pop-up in the top 5 or 6 vote-getters.
Also, I’m going to enjoy noting NL East standings, but I’m not interested in hearing the words “wild card” until September.
The key stat, of course, is wins! I’d love to see the Braves double their 7 games above .500 by the end of the season.
Bobby once said he looked at it this way: You hope to take 2 of 3 games with your first three starters, then split the other two turns. That will keep you in competetion for the playoffs.
We really need that #3 guy to work this formula.
Stapler,
I think comparing Orr to cancer is pretty distasteful and really over the top. He is just a guy trying to make a living doing something he loves.
Marc, I think your point is valid, but let’s not get too sentimental. Criticism of Orr’s play on the field is completely justified: he’s been a bum for us this year, and I’m sure if you asked him he’d agree. By all accounts he’s a lovely guy, a great clubhouse person, and if we had room for him as a pinch runner, he’d probably be worth it; as it is, we’re carrying Prado, Woodward, and Harris, all of whom can play the positions he can play, and all of whom can match or exceed his production. He’s not a good major league baseball player, and we don’t have room for him.
But he’s a really nice guy.
I do believe the Orr>Cancer comment is said in jest. Relax 🙂
How about Orr
* How about Orr
O.K. I’m trying to type Orr “Less Than” Used Jock Strap”
As far as the Arod moment of the week is concerned, its not that dirty, and the third basemen shouldn’t have let that affect him. Also, as A-rod said in his defense, he receives that sort of treatment everytime he chases down a foul pop-up near the opposing teams dugout. Thats baseball. The BlueJays should stop whining and just bean him already.
Heh heh heh. I love it. I like A-Rod, and while I think the arm-slap whenever that was was dirty, this is just plain funny. I watched the video that b-rule posted, and I don’t think he said “I got it.” I think he just said “HAH!” like he said he did. Now, if the Blue Jays’ underwear’s in a wad that bad, they should just plunk him to be done with it. And as A-Rod said, he should expect the same treatment on every pop-up to third. But at the end of the day, that’s just funny stuff and A-Rod’s just trying to help his team when a baseball game. Good for him.
Just because something is said in jest doesn’t mean it’s ok to say it. Just keep things in perspective is all I’m saying. I realize this is the internet but, c’mon, it’s just a baseball game.
In re Arod: WWTCD?
What Would Ty Cobb Do? (well besides wonder what the hell he was doing on the field with a bunch of minorities who were neither taking tickets nor watering the grass). I mean what the hell kind of sissy game is it where the baserunning equivalent of “hey batter batter” is so morally repugnant? Isn’t a hard slide into second “interfering” with the fielder’s attempt to make a DP? How about faking a break down the third base line to draw a throw? If it weren’t A-rod (ooh I hate that “nickname”), we wouldn’t even be talking about this.
What spike said.
Ty Cobb would have punched him in the gut, screwed his wife and drank all his liquor as he rounded third…..
I think A-Rod’s perfectly entitled to try to deke the other guy out as much as possible, although physical interference is obviously a no-no. I think it’s hilarious that it worked.
But I think A-Rod’s definitely asking the Jays to stick a fastball in his ear, and I fully expect Doc Halladay to oblige him upon their next meeting.
Of course, I can’t think of a single good reason NOT to plunk A-Rod. He’s a dangerous hitter, he’s an annoying twerp, and (in the immortal words of Don Drysdale) it saves you three pitches.
I bet this sort of thing happens every day, but rarely does a defensive player let it affect him.
I bet your right Josh
On a completely different note, the Kansas City Star (online newspaper) has a great column on Bo Jackson and some of things he was able to do on a ball field. For those of us old enough to remember some of the things he did, it’s a good read.
As Doc would say, “I’m your Huckleberry.”
Bo Jackson = probably the best athlete ever
Got to see Bo Jackson play in Spring Training for the Royals at the old Baseball and Boardwalk in Haines City….I have NEVER seen someone hit a ball so far in my life
Well, I’m still wondering why it wasn’t runner interference? A-Rod’s statement about guys in the dugout yelling isn’t apropos: Runner interference requires that it be the “runner” interfering with the defensive player making a play on a batted ball.
All that said, I don’t think what A-Rod did was morally repugnant or anything — maybe just good hard play that (I think) broke the rules. Now his choice of evening entertainment seems to be another matter.
I don’t think A-Rod’s “play” could be classified as good hard play, it tends more to the realm of chicken shit. The best way to deal with it is precisely how I imagine Bob Gibson or Don Drysdale would have dealt with it, that it, knock him on his ass the next time he comes to the plate.
#53 “I’m your Huckleberry”
Good stuff
He’ll probably pay for it, but that doesn’t take the missed out and run scored off the record, and it gets him a free base. The whole “I’m pissed off at you so I’m going to throw a ball at you that will sting only for a little bit, but it’ll put another runner on base, increase my WHIP, and lower my team’s chances of winning” just never made sense to me. You want to get someone back for showing you up? Beat his team by 10 runs.
Why is everyone saying that A-Rod was out of line? How is that any different than acting like you are going to catch a ball and letting it drop to get a double play? Or acting like the ball isn’t coming to you and catching it at the last second only to tag the runner out? He tricked them, and they fell for it – that’s their problem. There was no physical interference there, so no problem. I think people just have this perception of him from that one stupid play in the 2004 ALCS.
There is a rule against what A-Rod did and the rule isn’t (on its face) limited to physical interference. No rule against “tricking” a baserunner in the ways you mention, so long as it isn’t a balk. There is also a rule leveling the field on the fake catching the ball to get the double-play scenario — called the infield fly rule.
Topic for the off day.
Everyone agrees we need to add a legit 3rd starter. I saw were csg earlier said something about trying to get Paul Bryd back. I’d be great since he’s currently 6-1 and they are in first place in the Central I doubt they put him on the market. Which made me wonder who could we get.
The type that usually comes available is one a team that has little chance for the Wild Card, is a vetern pitcher having a solid season even if wins don’t reflect it, has a decent sized contract, and will be a free agent in a year or two.
What we have to deal is plenty of middle infield depth. Having watched Excobar and Prado in Mississippi the last couple of years I don’t think they’re the future but because of solid Arizona seasons they have decent value. We’d still have Lillibridge and Elvis Andrus in the system. (I personally think that’s the whole reason Prado’s on the team right now. But then no other reason makes since.)
So the teams that are essentially out of it allready are: Tampa Bay, Texas, Kansas City, Houston, The Nationals (unless they get to play us 60 more times), and Cincinnatti. (The Yankees number wise could be but they would never admit it and act like a seller.)
The Nationals, Tampa Bay, and Kansas City don’t have the veterns they’d be interested in dumping. Houston has Woody Williams but he wouldn’t be an up grade and Roy Oswalt and he’s not available.
So potential available guys I see are Eric Milton from the Reds (who’s an injury risk) and Kevin Millwood (whose 12 mill K could kill any deal). The Athletics are on the fringe but will probably become dealers and Joe Blanton could become available. (And the A’s desperatly need infielders who can stay healthy.) Lastly the Dodgers will have an abundance of starting pitchers if Schmidt comes back and no power in the outfield or at first. I don’t see the Braves matching up with them because they don’t have the pieces in the outfield or at first to give up. (unless you consider Salty.)
So my question is who do you see becoming available, do you want him, and is he worth the price?
I agree with the defending ARod camp. Notice that on almost every pick off play the first basemen will deke once or twice to try to fake the runner. On throws over the head of the cutoff man he’ll fake the catch and throw every time. That’s one thing I’ve noticed Edgar does a ton.
Hell, think back to when you played Little League or High School ball. In HS I played 2B, and the SS and I prided ourselves on screwing with the runner on 2nd’s head. Of course it usually didn’t work, but whenever we confused him and psyched him out enough for a pickoff or so he got a crap jump on a single, we’d high five. Sometimes it was a jumping high five… those are awesome.

Because you can’t be guaranteed that you’ll beat them by 10 runs.
Call me crazy, but I always kind of liked the fact that if you do something wrong, you’re gonna get hit by a pitch. Nobody likes getting hit by a pitch, even if it puts them on base. It always struck me as a good self-policing thing to make sure people don’t step out of line.
And while it’s probably best that it’s not acceptable to throw at somebody just because the guy before him hit a home run (Carlos Zambrano notwithstanding), I also think that it’s a bit of a shame that umpires have started issuing warnings without allowing the self-policing system to work.
Stupid double post.
Any word yet on what we’re going to get for the Langerhans deal? Or did I miss it? I’m still holding out for Brad Halsey.
Just reread my post. I appologize for the poor grammer in advance. You can change “one” into “on” and “since” into “sense” a couple of places and it might make more sense.
I will now take my Mississippi education back and hide under a rock somewhere.
I havent heard anything from the Langy deal. I wonder if we could send them another player or two and get Blanton or Gaudin
I’m just rooting for a big effort out of Matt Cain tonight.
Jeff K – thanks for the insight on the infield fly rule thingy (is that what its called – wink, wink). But that rule doesn’t apply on bunt attempts, so the possibility still stands.
When it comes down to it, what Rodriguez did wasn’t illegal, it was unbecoming, especially coming from one of the best players in the game (arguably) and a member of the richest team in Baseball. Had it come from a guy like Pete Orr who has to scrap (and possess pictures) just to stay in the league and from a member of a team that struggles to stay competitive, it probably wouldn’t get this kind of coverage. And the appropriate response is a good drilling to the back despite the fact that the drilling is a poor baseball move.
I’m with you there, Ububba. Confusion and damnation to the Mets. I hope every member of the Giants hits for the cycle except for Barry, who is stuck with a single, a double, and a triple.
Shit, I hope Bonds breaks the record against the Mets tonight!
As far as acquiring another pitcher, we don’t just have to match up with teams that have lost hope. After all, a team like Texas (and I know since I live in the DFW area) hasn’t given up publicly (and a move like trading Millwood would be giving up publicly). Instead, we need to find a team that has a need for what we can provide with a surplus of what we don’t have. We might for instance, package a couple of middle infielders and one of our AA stud pitchers for a 3 or 4 pitcher who is either arbitration eligible or who will be a free agent shortly. Or if we just need to upgrade, we might consider packaging our 3, Chuck James (or our 4 Kyle Davies), along with a prospect like Yunel or Matt Harrison, for a pitcher that is more consistent at this point than Chuck is, a truer #3. Such a trade would give a team that could sacrifice some consistency with two potential starters in a couple of years, while giving us the steady #3 that we need now. For my part, I’m too lazy to look around and find a more consistent three, but I imagine that he’s the type that on a good team wins 13-17 games, pitches 200 innings, and has a high 3 or low 4 ERA (on a weaker team, the wins go down, but everything else stays about the same). And I can be this lazy because I’m not the GM. Not all deals ought to be win-lose trades. The best ones are win-win because they not only help you get better, but also because they allow you to keep possibilities for future trades open.
Speaking of the A’s, they acquired another somewhat worthless outfielder yesterday…
The A’s obtained outfielder Dee Brown from Arizona for cash considerations and assigned him to Triple-A Sacramento. … Right-handed minor-league reliever David Schafer, who was designated for assignment last week, cleared waivers and was sent back to Sacramento.

I don’t see ARod’s stunt as being worse than a middle infielder decoying a runner. The Jays should probably give him a pitch in the ribs to discourage him from doing it again.
Re trades–the Rangers are a great target for trades. This isn’t because they match up particularly well with the Braves needs, but b/c they must be one of the ripest targets for scoring a lopsided deal. Just think of the trade of Chris Young and Adrian Gonzalez to the Padres. The Rangers must be one of the worst run teams in baseball.
Jay,
You are right about the Rangers. But a team that just signed Redman, while desperate, is still pretending that they are in it. They aren’t, clearly. And that of course just reinforces your conclusion about them as a poorly run organization.
Unfortunately this and their previous bad trades make them a poor trading partner since they get gunshy (remember that they traded Cordero to Milwaukee last year, along with a bit outfielder (Shrek is his nickname), for Nelson Cruz and Carlos Lee–who they had no chance of signing). Cordero, he of how many saves this year and what, a league hitting about .100 against him.). Moreover, they are a team that is less likely to trade away a guy like Millwood (or any other of their few quality players) for prospects that they could use to rebuild with–not because it wouldn’t ultimately make them better, but because they don’t “rebuild,” period. They just continue sucking. Sometimes on the strength of their hitting coach, who is excellent, they rise to mediocre.
Moreover, as bad as corporate owners are, and they are, the Rangers have worse. Tom Hicks isn’t uninterested in the Rangers. He’s just more interested in other things. He wants them on a tight budget to make money for him, but then every so often, he comes down from the clouds and makes an awful deal over the head of the GM which wrecks the budget entirely for years to come.
But then, Jay, you knew all of this already, and these and other reasons allow me to maintain my allegiance to the Braves despite living in the DFW area.
I’m sorry, I should have addressed my last post to Frank, not Jay. Mea culpa.
Actually, speaking of #3 pitchers, I wouldn’t mind at all getting a guy like Dave Bush. He’s not having a great year right now, but he’s quietly been an average or above-average pitcher for a few years. The Brewers are going to have a glut of pitching when Gallardo comes up, and I think we could probably get him cheap. The question is whether the Second Spitter could get him to pitch as well as Mike Maddux can.
Damn, I wish we had Maddux as our pitching coach.
For those who may be interested, the Orlando Magic are expected to announce Billy Donovan as thier new head coach sometime in the next 24 hrs….as both a Gators fan and Magic fan, I am both bummed and psyched….
OrrMyGodISuck!,
Yeah I just saw that on the Fanhouse…that’s huge news. I’m actually a little surprised by this, I thought he was staying for sure, seeing as how Florida was supposed to announce his contract extension soon.
I’m pretty certain Chuck James is unavilable for a trade.
Florida offered him his new Contract on May 17th, almost 2 weeks ago, and he didnt sign. The news here is 8 Years at 6mil per year, which is double what the Gators had offered money wise….
Bye-bye Billy. I won’t miss you at all.
Silly Gators!
Fox Sports say 6/36 but still that’s a lot
I remain skeptical. Donovan agreed in principal to a deal with UF; the only hangup was board of whatever approval, which was just a formality. The money is certainly right, but Donovan could have had all that and a bag of chips at UK.
Once I hear someone besides the Orlando Sentinal report it, we’ll talk.
Okay, just read the Fox Sports thing. The guy there is saying that the Magic have made him an offer and “sources close to the situation” expect him to accept it.
The thing that gets me is that this guy (Jeff Goodman?) is already speculating on who Florida will bring in to replace Donovan, and there’s just no way he has any idea; Anthony Grant sounds like a good idea and is plausible, but there’s no way UF had talked about him (let alone TO him) in any sort of serious way.
Donovan leaving would take just about everyone in the know in UF sports completely off-guard at this point.
Hey, Jim Harrick’s available.
So is Ron Jirsa
Didn’t Jai Lucas hold off his commitment to ensure the program he chose was stable? I hope Florida loses Donovan.
1) I don’t get why a pro team would want Donovan. Great recruiter, solid enough coach (given the talent he brings to UF)—but there is absolutely no way he’ll succeed in the NBA.
2) 3 cheers for A-Rod. Like Rob, I’m a fan. Like spike and sansho, I’m ready to weep over the fact that so many people are so up in arms over this. Sheesh. And the “It’s okay for Pete Orr to do it but not for A-Rod to do it” argument makes no sense. What could be better than an all-world talent doing even the little things to give his team an advantage.
3) Throwing at a batter who does what A-Rod did is equally acceptable. The message you give is: “It’s worth the risk of putting you on base—and I’m good enough that it won’t matter—to put just a split-second of fear and a couple days of soreness into you.”
4) I’ve decided that I want Blanton. That’s who I think we should target.
“McCann…went to a bathroom adjacent to the dugout and took out his frustrations.”
http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/braves/stories/2007/05/30/0531braves.html
Too easy.
Jirsa is back with Tubby Smith, as an assistant at Minnesota.
He was NIT bound in his two seasons at UGA, but he was a super nice guy. Met him a couple times here in NYC. He recruited some of Harrick’s best players & I thought he got shafted. But then again, he didn’t exactly set the world on fire at Marshall.
Too bad none of the Nats’ starters can stay healthy.
A) They’d be cheap.
B) We wouldn’t have to face them.
Blanton’s durability makes trade unlikely:
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2007/05/blantons_durabi.html
Hey, I hadn’t heard this:
Apparently Willie Harris “was offered a guaranteed major-league deal by another club, but chose to sign a minor-league contract with the Braves, who play about 2 1/2 hours from his home in Cairo, Ga. He is living in Atlanta with his older brother, Shedrick.”
So Willie turned down a guaranteed major league spot just so he could play with the hometown team? Thank goodness he did, because we can sure use the guy. Way to go, Willie!
Having rooted for the Magic since ’93… I’m intrigued at what Billy can bring.
I know that he might fail big time (see Pitino, Rick)…but it can’t be any worse than Brian Hill. I refuse to believe that…
I was hoping that they get the Phoenix assistant..but hey, Donovan would bring some buzz and excitement as well.
If we dangle Salty or Escobar/Reyes, I suspect a deal could get done, Dan.
after the a-rod incident (during the world baseball classic) where francoeur called a-rod out on yelling at a kid for getting him the wrong pair of shoes and this incident, i do have to say that a-rod has earned his douchebag degree.
ububba, I think Jirsa’s main problem back in the day was that he was the players’ choice, and then his players didn’t perform. Chadwick and Harrison, IIRC the two most vocal Jirsa proponents, both regressed after he came aboard, and Jumaine Jones would alternate flashes of brilliance with extended periods of hoisting long jumpers. Harrison’s PPG went up slightly, but he wasn’t nearly the player he was under Tubby.
The perception at the time, as I’m sure you recall, was that the players chafed under Tubby and got the guy they knew wouldn’t be as tough on them. I don’t know if that’s true, but visual evidence seemed to support it.
Although I don’t care about A-Rod’s bush-league play one way or another, it should be noted that nobody exactly stood up for him in the Yankee clubhouse. (We know what the Jays thought.) Whatever MLB code there is concerning those kinds of tricks, he apparently crossed the line.
The Yankee reporter on WFAN put it this way: “Have you ever seen anyone ever do that? There’s a reason for that. It’s simply not done.”
And if I’m A-Rod, I’m just happy they’re talking about this & not the other thing.
As a Tennessee fan, I’m with ububba (well, not WITH him exactly, since he’s a Georgia fan, but you know…agree with him on this particular topic). Please dear God, let him leave. When he was leaving for Kentucky (supposedly), I didn’t really care since I had to deal with him either way, but that’s not the case now, obviously.
As for how he’ll do, I don’t think it really makes sense for him to go to the NBA. I foresee a Rick Pitino situation forthcoming here. Well, maybe not quite as disastrous since it’s not a team with a batshit crazy fanbase, but I do think he won’t be very successful and will come back to college within five years.
“after the a-rod incident (during the world baseball classic) where francoeur called a-rod out on yelling at a kid for getting him the wrong pair of shoes”
I remember it being about getting the wrong kind of food or drink. Either way, it shows what a jacka** Alex Rodriguez is.
sansho1,
I’m not saying Jirsa was a great coach. I just think he should’ve been allowed to coach his guys. And you’re right, he inherited some talent, but his teams never really gelled. And no, he never seemed really in charge out there.
What followed, of course, wrecked the program & had people making UGA curriculum jokes all across the country—thanks for that, Coach Harrick & President Adams.
Schmucks.
Donovan comes into a good situation, with Dwight Howard, Darko Milicic, and the loss of Grant Hills huge contract….and like Davey said, he cant be worse than Brian Hill…
Orr-Mygod-I-Suck,
I’ll add Jameer Nelson to that list, and maybe even J.J. Redick, Trevor Ariza and Carlos Arroyo. Some nice young talent…
I really hope that they hold on to Milicic though. I have high hopes for that young man after what I’ve seen from him since he came over to Orlando.
What other thing with A-Rod? I’m clearly out of the loop.
And if the thing about the WBC is true, I’ll stop calling myself a fan of his.
Stu,
I believe he was referring to A-Rod going out with other woman while in different cities. Mostly strippers. And not only does he go out with them, he takes them on expensive shopping sprees to places like Versache. And according to one person, A-Rod likes “the she-male, muscular type”.
I posted it on one of my blogs earlier. And it was all over sites like the Fanhouse today.
After doing some research, it’s safe to say I’m off the A-Rod bandwagon (is there such a thing?).
Down with A-Rod! Boooooooooooooooo!
Yeah Stu, I posted something for you, but I had two links in it, so I guess it didn’t go through.
Stu,
You’ve joined the masses.
A-Rod’s wife wasn’t manly enough for him.
And how ’bout those Giants? Already 2-0 on El Duque in the first.
My favorite line in the story I read about the A-Rod thing was some not-well-tipped-by-Rodriguez stripper’s bitter remark about A-Rod prefering “she-males”.
Matt Cain isn’t fooling anybody.
Mets up 3-2 in the second.
make that 4-2
Chad Johnson is going to race a horse!

so now that Donovan accepted, does that make UK fans feel even worse?
Great stuff CSG, on the Chad story..thanks.
Here’s a random Youtube video for everyone’s enjoyment…
Fantasy question (keeper league):
If you had Grady Sizemore and needed a starter, would you accept Chris B. Young and Rich Hill for him?
I’m trying to land Sizemore and have proposed that trade, thinking Young is a solid enough replacement and has great keeper value, and Hill is just very good.
Thoughts?
Sorry, my internet was down or I would have approved the comment already.
Giants trade Benitez to Fla for Messenger
oh yeah, and the Giants are paying all of his salary
IOW, “We have to get him as far away as we can before he balks in any more runs.”
I sure am glad that ESPN.com’s recap of the Giants-Mets game told me that the Giants’ clubhouse was a bit muggy before the game, so Barry Bonds told someone to turn the A/C on. THANK YOU FOR THAT. Goodness.
Did the two balks even really matter? Delgado’s homerun still would have gone out.
well he might not have gotten the same pitch, you never know
this is a big stretch for the Braves and they have to face some good starters. Next 4 games
Zambrano, Hill, Marshall, and Mitre…other than Zambrano their stats are very strong. Hope our offense shows up
Whoever said the Braves should try to get Dave Bush is right on except the Brewers would never trade him. If he was on Pittsburgh he’d be the perfect guy to trade for, since he’s probably been the unluckiest pitcher in baseball this year and has a decent track record.
I dunno. A-Rod and she-males? I dunno, that sounds like something bogus to me. Those link look like something I’d read on The Onion instead of something reputable.
ARod= Big Bag Of Douche. I hate him with the rest of the Yankees. Between the calling off the third basemen and slapping Arroyo, he is just chicken #*$^. But that may just be my opinion (and everyone elses below the Mason-Dixon Line). I’m sorry, but that kind of play is just bad sportsmanship, and dare I say un-American. Win because you are the better team, not because you cheat. Great role model there.
Oh, and it really SUCKS that we lost Donovan. That’s all I have to say about that.
The happiest basketball fans are not in Orlando, but in Kentucky. In fact, things could not have worked out better: Florida wins its second title thereby further raising the SEC’s basketball profile and also underscoring the need for the Cats to get a great coach; Kentucky hires Gillespie and he promptly obtains some first-rate recruits Alex Legion and Patrick Patterson (whom Donovan tried to sign) giving him a strong incoming class; Billy announces his departure from the shocked Gators, leaving Kentucky poised to re-establish its basketball supermacy in the SEC. A pretty good spring for the Wildcats…
Look out for Ole Miss next year in basketball. You saw it here first.
Jay10–Enjoyed your postings on Stray-Rod–maybe we should just call him ‘the King’….How long before he will be doing commercials for Viagra?
Yeah well, Tubby got recruits (despite what most people seem to think), so I wouldn’t count my chickens before they hatch. Still gotta play it on the court, which has generally been the problem.
Next year should theoretically be our best since Pearl took the job…on paper anyway. And given that we went to the Sweet Sixteen in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year, I think I would pick us as the team to beat in the East next year. Although I would…so it probably doesn’t mean much coming from me.
Oh, and I don’t know how many people have seen this…

I’m not really interested in Mark Bradley’s opinion, but what I am interested in in that column is McGuirk’s bullshit.
Perhaps someone should remind him that we had a team entirely filled with young players that sucked uncontrollably until we signed some free agents and traded for some veterans in ’91.
Perhaps someone should also point out to him that no team ever wins a championship without dabbling in the free agent and/or trade market at least a little.
I seriously hope that’s the bullshit excuse he’s required to spin for our payroll restraints, because if that’s his actual philosophy, I’m starting to wish Liberty Media had axed him and thrown in a lackey of their own.
“Free agency is so inefficient’? What the hell does that even mean? Perhaps you’ve noticed that we haven’t been anywhere near as good since we stopped signing free agents? Because I have.
If there is a correlation between attendance and all the local kids, it’s because sports fans in Atlanta are idiots (speaking as someone who was born here and who’s lived here almost all my life) and think that a professional sports team should be comprised entirely of players from their college or from the immediate area. (Georgia fans who think the Falcons should sign all Georgia players are the most annoying and overzealous in this regard.) So if he’s trying to build a championship team on what the fans think they want, we are utterly, utterly screwed.
At least McGuirk’s apparent fixation on “young talent” hasn’t kept us from trading for veterans here and there over the last several years, and I’m sure that eventually Schuerholz will hold a gun to his head and tell him that we are trading for a third starter, because Scheurholz isn’t a kiss-ass and will do what he thinks needs to be done. But God help us if McGuirk’s still around when Schuerholz and Cox leave.
I don’t see the big deal with what ARod did “calling off” the 3rd baseman. Its a baseball game not a golf tournament. Silence isn’t required. Other players don’t do that because they think a “little league trick” like that would never work on a major league player. Heck, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it work in little league or church league softball. If I were the Jay’s 3rd baseman I would have kept my mouth shut about the whole incident because I would have been embarassed to admit the a little league trick fooled me.
Nick–I will not dispute the fact that Tennessee should be good (though after their collapse in the NCAA tourney I wonder about Pearl’s ability), but UK is a dynasty school with a good coach. Tubby could not recruit worth a damn: he would have had trouble finding volunteers after Pearl Harbor….
Should be a fun season ahead….
