FOXSports.com – MLB- These off-season issues have lingered
The Braves. Still without a closer, they likely will trade for another reliever, probably a hard-throwing youngster, by Opening Day.
Um… Ken… I’m not saying that the Braves won’t do that. It’s just that they already have lots of hard-throwing youngsters. Boyer, McBride, Villareal, Devine — these are all hard-throwing youngsters. How many are they supposed to collect? I can’t believe I’m saying this, but they need some veterans.
(Via Primer.)
They ought to make Brian Jordan the closer. That guy is all heart.
Rumor has it in Atlanta that Rafael Belliard has reported to Camp Roger.
Basil, I think you’re on to something. Or maybe we could lure Jack Morris out of retirement to be a hard-throwing oldster?
The Braves should hold open tryouts instead of doing the fantasy camp thing this offseason. We need a 45 year old guy, like the Devil Ray they made a movie about, to close games in October.
My friend then said we need to bring back our closer from every year in the 90s Wohlers, McMicahel, hell even get Readon who’s crazy and Rocker who’s just retarded and do a reality series about washed up former Braves pitchers. The winner should get a spot on the team in March since they’ll be cut by July.
You forgot to add to your write-up on Boyer that he was in Stu’s kindergarten class. And that’s important.
Sorry I’m a day late.
I stand by my belief that the Braves should hire a mercenary force to bust Ugueth Urbina out of Venezuelan prison… or just wait until he’s acquitted, either way.
We could make a movie out of option A though.
🙂
Hah. I think allowing whomever break Urbina out of Prison to have him on their roster is a GREAT plan for MLB.
Would anybody want to take a chance on Pedro Astacio? He turned down the Padres offer of arbitration. If he’s signed with someone and I missed it, I’m sorry.
It seemed like he gave them some quality innings as they struggled to stay afloat last summer.
I would. I’m a big Pedro Astacio fan. Does anyone realize what this guy did in Coors?!! It’s a shame that he spent his best years there and that he was injured promptly upon escape (only to “Coors-lite” in Houston at that).
I’d love to see the Braves add Astacio. He’s not the pitcher he was, but he was good for the Padres down the stretch last year (3.17 ERA over 12 starts, though with weak peripherals). With all the good pitchers parks in the NL East, he can definitely help us… cheaply.
Oh, and by the way, I volunteer for the Ugueth Freedom Squad. I’m got some vacation to burn, and it was my idea, so…

An Ugi prison break…hmm…it’s got some merrit!
Ok, I am in if JS or Bobby will buy me a Rambo knife and a bow and arrows with explosive tips.
Ok three in a row,
Go check out who they have listed as our closer for next season. I was shocked…

There’s been a lot of speculation that this would be the case. And he’ll certainly get a shot in ST.
I hope it is right. Reitsma doesn’t have the mental strength to be closer. Although Devine got roasted on his first couple of outings he played pretty well in the NLDS (ok so he gave up the HR – but he pitched well and it doesn’t count in MM park).
The best of a bad bunch …
