Everyone keeps talking about finding a platoon partner for LaRoche, I personally think its time to give him the job everyday or to get rid of him.
But if he does need a platoon is Scott Thorman ready to have some playing time. He’s put up decent numbers in the past

Fox Sports reporting Nomar to the Astros.
Additionally, a note says Braves believed both Villareal and Cormier were overworked by the D-Backs, and both will noticably improve.. I have a hunch that his bullpen could be as good as the one in 2002? with Hammond, Holmes.. that bunch.

All I can do is laugh, Dayn Perry could be the worst. Has he ever had anything good to say about the Braves.
This is his report card for their trades so far. Of course he thinks we let Furcal go for below market value and we also signed Renteria for above market value. All I can do is scratch my head!
Well, there’s no doubt Cormier was overused. The fact that he had postive innings pitched proves that.

What about Blauser as a platoon partner for LaRoche? Yeah…that sounds better the more I think about it.

Does it annoy anyone else how fast sportscasters make the jump from poor performance to steroids? It goes both ways, but I was watching Cold Pizza this morning and the guy who wasn’t Skip Bayless was saying, “What else happened during these recent bad years by Nomar? Drug testing.” Where do you make a logical connection between poor performance and drug withdrawal? That’s a pretty big leap and a pretty big accusation.

The thing I can’t figure out is when the last time we had a bunch of guys, Nomar being one, who completely tore muscles off their bones. I find the timing of this sudden “new” injury very curious indeed. You put that with a significant performance drop-off, also curiously timed, and even considering the prior wrist you have to wonder what’s been going on.

Oh, and to answer your actual question: Yes, I do. In fact, I even find it annoying when I do it 🙂

Nationals just signed Robert Fick to a 1-year deal. Did he used to play for us? My memory is extremely bad in that regard, since we seem to have had a lot of random mediocre infielders parading through here over the years.
Off-topic: WHAT is going on between Da Ali G Show and Kazakhstan? It’s hilarious to follow.

I live out in AZ and as such I follow the D-Backs a little bit. I have a (very subjective) tendency to think that Bob Melvin absolutely SUCKS at managing his bullpen, and that he especially tends to overuse his decent relievers. So I went to ESPN and checked on Cormier this past year, thinking that maybe Melvin overpitched him with predictably bad results.
On the 10th of July Cormier’s ERA was 2.70 (that’s the last time it would be below 3 all season; to that point it had always been under 3, except for a brief two-game stint). At that point he had thrown 50 innings (my math could be off slightly but that’s pretty close) and had appeared in 37 of his team’s 85 games. From that point on his ERA climbed basically every time he took the hill.
What does this prove? Nothing. I have no idea if 50 innings over 37 appearances in 85 total games constitutes overuse, though if you extrapolate that out to a full season it seems fairly heavy. But I think that it is a bad idea to write Cormier off immediately or to say that any use of him out of the pen is destined to go badly; for half a year last year, he was better than most of the relievers the Braves ran out to the mound…

Jenny, Fick did play for us I believe for only one year though. Do you rememebr when he had that dirty play at 1st. I dont remember who we were playing but he hit the 1st baseman w/ his forearm while running past the bag. I dont think Bobby cared too much for him after that. I dont think he ever played again after that game

It was 2003 that Fick played for us. He hit Eric Karros of the Cubs in the playoffs, and the Braves washed their hands of him. To his credit, he still speaks highly of the organization.
The only good thing about Fick was he was our third catcher in the playoffs, and gave us something other than the series loss to remember about that series (talking about the forearm). I do remember him either having a decent first or second half, but the other half was absolutely atrocious so it evened out.

Rosenthal saying the Braves “believe” Villarreal was overused by the D’Backs is pretty hilarious — does it really require a leap of faith to call this usage pattern overuse:
Year Age GP
1999 17 14
2000 18 25
2001 19 0
2002 20 26
2003 21 86
Sure, he was a usually a starter in the minors, and actually pitched more innings in 2002, but with all the warming up and consecutive games in 2003 — well, it doesn’t take a genius.

Well, if you say that a guy was overused, and then you find yourself using him the same amount for some reason, you might get in trouble.
