Atlanta Braves vs. St. Louis Cardinals – Box Score – September 11, 2011 – ESPN.
So, another stinkbomb. This is not making me optimistic.
Tim Hudson held the Cards for two innings, but with two out in the third completely imploded. He gave up an RBI single to Pujols, which happens, but then loaded the bases with a walk (having already put two on by HBP) then walked in a run before allowing a three-run double. He pitched pretty well otherwise, allowing one run in the fifth, but the damage was done.
The Braves blew a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the fourth. In the sixth, they actually scored two runs on a Freddie Freeman single and a Matt Diaz sac fly, but that was all they got. Chipper hit a homer in the eighth. They never did get the tying run to the plate. All in all, another disaster. The Braves are 2-6 on this road trip and their only wins are against the Mets.
Wow, talk about a completely lost sports weekend…
Gotta be better next week—starting tomorrow.
At least the rest of our schedule with the exception of the Phillies is against sub .500 teams.
So is the Cards. They get the Mets, Cubs and Astros to finish up.
Key to success: Win tomorrow. Repeat pattern.
Cards also get the Phillies 4 times.

Rays’ Shields came within two outs of his 12th(!) complete game. What a season this guy is having. He is certainly a strong Cy Young contender. 1.03 WHIP, .216 BAA, 226 IP, at least pitching into the 8th inning in nine of his last ten starts incl. three CGs.

So, how about that weekend for Atlanta sports?
The Braves were talking about how they aren’t doing “the little things” like getting runners in from third. But they haven’t been doing that all year. A lot of the problems are being exacerbated by the fact that the starting pitching isn’t as good and the bullpen is starting to struggle. The Braves have won a lot of games this year where the offense left a ton of runners on base and they were saved by the pitching, especially the bullpen. That’s not happening now. And Hudson, who is really the only guy approaching an ace on the team, is really struggling.
Until now, the ups and downs haven’t been particularly problematic–that’s baseball. But the problems on the team are starting to accumulate just like last year. Right now, Chipper Jones is the best hitter on the team and the only guy really playing well down the stretch.

The problem with that theory is that the Braves got shut out by the Mets before the break. Of course, you could argue that the Braves were anticipating the break and let down.
I’m not sure the team is playing all that differently than they have all year, but they are losing some close games that they had been winning. If they had won the game Friday night, things would look a lot different even if they had lost Saturday and Sunday.

Right. And he sat in the middle game of the Cardinals series. Not only did that remove the team’s best hitter currently, but it also allowed Prado to inexplicably have a ball go right past him at third, leading to a run that ended up being the difference.

I think Fredi called the dogs off too early. If we blow this, he should be the one to hang. But we all know he won’t. we will just be forced to tip our caps.
The Cardinals may just have the braves number. It was a bad series. If the braves do lose out, the Friday game will be the one pointed to ‘where it all went terribly wrong’.
The next 12 are against the Marlins, Mets, @Marlins, @Nats. The Cards have 3 in Pitt, and 4 in Philly, but then the Cubs and Stros the close out.
The braves also have the next two Thursday’s off, which could be a HUGE help. I won’t worry until it gets inside of 3 games, than all bets are off.

In fairness to Fredi, Chipper has been so injury prone in the past few years that, especially given his age, I can understand the desire to rest him. It’s easy to say he is calling off the dogs too soon, but if Chipper got hurt and was out for the year, we would be saying that he needed to rest him with the big lead. It’s sort of a no-win situation.
