Atlanta Braves vs. Philadelphia Phillies – Box Score – September 05, 2011 – ESPN.
Well, I guess that the Braves might as well have forfeited, it would have been the same result. And we might as well forget about late-2010 Derek Lowe.
Lowe gave up two runs in the first, and this time wasn’t able to contain the damage for more than a couple of innings. He gave up two in the fourth, and with Cliff Lee on the mound for the Phillies, the three Lowe allowed in the fifth were just icing on the bitter cake that was this game.
The Braves got fewer hits (5) than the Phillies scored runs off of Lowe (7) and Lee scored more runs (1) than the entire Braves team (0). It was ugly. The only time when they got two hits in an inning a double play came between.
The good news is that Peter Moylan came back and pitched to three batters, all of whom he retired. Scott Linebrink gave up a homer to Ryan Howard, no surprise, leading off the seventh, right in front of Moylan. Arodys Vizcaino gave up a run in the eighth.
Well, the “red-hot” Cardinals, who weren’t going to lose another game this year, have now dropped three-of-four, two-of-three at home to the crappy Reds; dropped our magic number by 4 during a period in which we have also lost three-of-four; and been caught for second place in the wild card by the wheezing Giants.
To Ryan from the last thread: I don’t think I’m giving the director too much credit, really. Zack Snyder has now made five movies — the Dawn of the Dead remake, 300, The Watchmen, The Legend of Ga’hoole (the animated owl movie), and Sucker Punch, and all of them were greeted by the exact same critical reaction: cool visuals, but incoherent story. He’s not a nobody, and he’s not a complete hack. He’s a brilliant visual stylist who sucks at telling a coherent story. Sucker Punch is no exception.
I think with Sucker Punch (the only one of the five on which he has a story credit), Snyder was trying to make a serious point — the covers on the soundtrack are too glaringly obvious to be just a coincidence, and no piece of literature has EVER left its main character nameless without a very good reason for doing so. The point I believe he was trying to make was, understandably given his pedigree, essentially visual in nature, apparently having something to do with images of nubile female sexuality — but just because he obviously failed at making his point doesn’t mean he didn’t have one.
One mystery that can only be revealed by listening to the post-game show is whether we have to tip our cap to our opponent, or give them a little credit.
Jay just said we have to give the Phils a little credit for this win. Just FYI.

As to your latter point, well… I’m a big believer in “once you’re in it you can win it.” Still, I will be embarrassed if we back into it. I will be embarrassed if we win the wild card and are 10 games behind the Phillies in the East. Normally wild cards barge into the postseason with a big head of steam. The narrative is written that the wild card was the hottest team in the league and not one to take lightly when they pushed on to the World Series. But if we are a 90-win team, I just don’t see a lot of glory attached to our wild card berth. Anyways…
I basically agree with Bethany. I recognize that he had a point in mind when making the movie, but since he failed to get that point across at all it basically doesn’t matter. I have actually liked the rest of Snyder’s movies to varying degrees (with the exception of The Owls of Ga’hoole, which I have not seen), but if you have a point to make you have to do so with a watchable movie, especially in the case of mainstream movies, otherwise it is entirely for naught. I mean in the end, a Twitter post from Zach Snyder lamenting the sexualization of women in pop culture would’ve been more effective than that movie.
So, by dressing up girls as sex slaves and placing them in a fantasy world killing all male-based characters, Snyder was trying to poke fun at the World of Warcraft gamers and their misconceptions of females of the world? That’s basically what he said in an interview, and if so…MISSION FAILED!

Bethany, I disagree — not because I’m trying to defend the movie per se, but just because I’d rather watch a movie in which an idea is badly expressed, than a movie in which there is no idea whatsoever, like Transformers 3 or Cowboys & Aliens, probably my two least favorite movies of the summer. I’d rather watch a writer-director strive and fail than watch a hack aim for mediocrity and achieve it.

The Help is a great movie
If your idea is something incoherent about the exploitation of female sexuality, and you bungle the idea so much that even your best defenders can offer only a half-hearted “maybe he was trying to say something like this,” then in fact what you’ve done is create a work that is mired in the same crass exploitation of female sexuality you were, perhaps, in theory, possibly trying to critique.
This seems to me a bad idea. If you can’t pull it off, all you’ve done is created yet another piece of soft-core exploitation to add to the heap. Which is, I suspect, all Sucker Punch is.
If you’re going to go for the quadruple-axel, by god you better land the thing. Else you’re just on your ass on the ice.

Pretty clear that the Phillies are, at this point, much better than the Braves. Earlier in the year, sans Pence and with Jurrjens and Hanson in the Braves rotation, the teams were close, but I can’t say that now. Even if the Braves were to somehow win the next two against the end of the Phillies rotation, it’s hard to see beating Halladay, Lee, and Hamels. Doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen but the Braves have clearly regressed vis a vis the Phillies. But the Phillies may be irrelevant anyway because that would require getting past Milwaukee.

The playoffs are a crapshoot that any team in it can win. Look at the 83-win 2006 Cardinals.
The playoffs are a crapshoot and any team CAN win but still, some outcomes are more likely than others. I think the Phillies will have an enormous amount of pressure on them that none of the other teams will have so they aren’t a sure thing. But, I would still rather have their team than ours at this point.

They might not have a choice. Philly doesn’t have an off day for the rest of the season.
Given both teams are likely going to make the playoffs with room to spare, and the two teams play in the last series of the season, couldn’t they tentatively punt the game and then add it as part of a doubleheader in Atlanta at the end of the year in the unlikely event that it’s necessary? Forcing both teams into back-to-back doubleheaders is silly.

According to mlb.com, the NL playoffs start on Oct. 1, so that would be a possibility barring a crazy three-team tie for the wild card, you’re right. Again, assume you’re not gonna play the game, but if it’s necessary, fly up there and play it on the 29th.
I can’t remember where I read that the Phillies also have a doubleheader scheduled for Thursday, but that is apparently inaccurate. The Phillies do not have a doubleheader scheduled for Thursday. It’s next Thursday they have a doubleheader. I’m afraid that makes it more likely we’ll get back-to-back doubleheaders, as the Phillies will probably want to play two on Wednesday.
EDIT: I believe that was the Mets back in April, and it was two doubleheaders in three days, not two in a row. They complained to the commissioner about us making them play a doubleheader the day after a rainout, forcing them into that five games in three days gauntlet.
Seriously, though, what the hell is the point of even having a commissioner if he’s not gonna save teams from situations such as back-to-back doubleheaders and five games in three different cities in 72 hours?

I don’t understand the basis of any doom and gloom. We’ve started September 2-3. Big whoop. Guess what. We started August that way too, and we went 17-9 last month. (Interesting fact: the braves longest losing streak this season is 3 games).
The season series against the Phillies is basically a toss-up: 6-7. The Braves are the only team to have defeated Lee, Halladay and Hamels at least once each. Granted, that would be difficult for a non-division team to pull off, but the point is they are beatable, and this team can beat them.
Losing Jurjjens is a blow, but Hudson and Beach are pitching well, and Hanson will be back in time to have a chance at entering the playoffs strong. And then you have the rookies, any one of whom might show us something between now and then.
And our odds of not making the playoffs are about 1%.
Just giving a little perspective for some folks who struggle with the concept…

While our good bullpen has reduced the Braves’ runs allowed, it has also allowed us to win a lot more than we’ve deserved over the last month or so, given the number of runs the Braves ultimately did give up.

Considering he gave up a sac fly to Agony, which is nearly impossible, I’d consider it a failure. Gameday says Constanza “lined out” too, and then the pitcher’s spot never had a chance (with a pitcher in it).

Regardless, Don just said there’s a big cell moving towards the stadium about 15 minutes. Sending Tim Hudson to bat with runners on and two outs when the game has a high likelihood of not going 9 innings is just pure ignorance.

I’ve generally been a supporter of Fredi’s, in the same way I was a supporter of Bobby’s– mainly through the fact that the team is really good around him and he keeps the drama to a minimum.
But, boy…there are nights when it’s really hard to defend him. He’s taken a winnable game and just barfed it away with some really bad decisions. Unless there’s something going on that’s not clear to us in the public (ie, Venters and O’Flaherty are unavailable), the way he managed this inning makes absolutely no freakin’ sense.

Sadly, the Braves can’t offer us these five hours (counting rain delays) of our lives back. And they won’t offer us something that might make the pain worthwhile- Fredlot’s head on a pointed stick.
I’m pretty sure we don’t have a quorum at this late hour, and it wouldn’t seem right to start it up without Mac around, but perhaps tomorrow we could take up the matter of firing Fredi. I think a show of hands ought to suffice.

This was not a good showing for the Braves last night. We were coming off a big walk off win vs the Dodgers on sunday and to came out and lay a egg vs the Phillies was not what we needed. The Braves have not been playing as good as i would like losing four of our last six games but we are getting healthy again just in time for the postseason. Moylan is back from the DL which only makes our bullpen deeper. Hanson shoulder seems to be getting better just in time for a late season run. No worries Braves Country we will make a statement in October! Go Braves!

Am I imagining this or have the Braves played sloppily, carelessly, lackadaisically, and indifferently while the Phillies are busting their behinds to win these games? I understand that they probably couldn’t catch the Phils even with a sweep, but don’t like what I’m seeing.
