That’s more like it. Tim Hudson was on, giving up just three singles, striking out ten (all in the first six innings) and not walking anyone, completing the game on 110 pitches. So, if we can get that sort of pitching performance, we’re in good shape! For most of the game, it was strikeouts and groundouts almost exclusively. Hudson got three fly ball outs in the ninth, probably meaning he was tiring, but he didn’t need anything else.
The offense, such as it was, came in the fourth. Chipper reached on a two-base error on a ball that nearly made it out, and after Teixeira struck out (he did that three times; maybe the Braves should juggle the batting order, as he’s really pressing with runners on, and Chipper was on all four times) McCann hit a bomb off the foul pole in right for all the runs.
Not much else to say. The Braves had just six hits, but that was twice what the Reds got. Escobar, Francoeur, and Kotsay had the other hits, all singles.
Hampton thinking of retirement. Maybe he will and we can move on

Has anyone heard anything about Soriano lately? It’s like he dropped off the face of the earth.
Just back from the Rome Braves game. One run losses must be something they’re working on through out the system b/c the RBraves fell 5-4 to Greenville. Heyward was 0-4 with all 4 being flyouts to LF or left-center; he also had a throwing error. Cody Johnson looked awful–2 strikeouts (now at 45 on the season!) and two groundouts. Diamond was the SP; he allowed 2 runs in 5+ innings.
The wind was really whipping out when the game started so I hoped there would be some longballs, but the wind died down as the game prgressed and the only homer was by Braves 3B Adam Coe.

Looks like Hawks might press a game 7… glad something can take down my smug NE buddy who’s fan of both the BoSox and the Celtics.

I sure wish they had some idea of how to play half-court offense. But, a Game 7? It’s been so long, I’ll take it.

I’ve come around. For the first time ever, I really want Hampton just retire. I’ve been rooting for him for almost three years, but I just wish he’d retire already. Even if he makes it back by July or whenever, he’s not going to help this team. This is the last year of his contract, he’s not going to be re-signed, and he would help the team so much by getting us an extra $6-8 (thinking conservatively) by just cashing in his chips and calling it a career. Come on man, give us a break here.
As for Smoltz, wow, this is happening so fast. At the beginning of the year, we had him penciled in for 200 innings and a sick-nasty ERA. Even in his first several starts, he was straight-up dealing. And all of a sudden, his season (career?) has fallen off a cliff. And yet, he’s still trying to get back to help the team. Man, I freakin’ love this guy.
Kotsay had another hit tonight. I think it is safe to say he has exceeded all of our expectations thus far (knock on wood).
I hope Reyes can give us 5 innings and more Ks than BBs tomorrow. His stamina has been an issue so far, probably due to poor command and lots of pitches.
braves14, JoJo has made great stride this season as you can see from his Richmond stats. We will see if he can take his success to the major league level.
kc, it’s deceptive. He’s not even averaging 5 IP per start.
Well, to be fair, he did get taken out after 2 innings to save him for his start tomorrow. That hurt the average.

Only one start lasting more than 5 innings. The peripherals are good, I hope they carry to the major league level. I hope he does well, we certainly could use another starter to stabilize one of the two holes in the rotation.
Also, Phil Stockman should be freed.
They are all on pitch count limit in the minor this early in the season. You are seeing the same thing happening to Tommy Hanson as well.
Yes, Stockman will be much more useful in the bullpen than Resop.
Im with kc, I think that is more of a pitch count thing. No minor league prospects go deep in games early in the season. I know at the beginning of the year in Low-A Ball, they sometimes only allow starters to pitch 2 innings.
People would think so much more of Hampton if he just retires. The time for cautious optimism is over.
I’ll be shocked if Hampton retires during this season. It might be the “honorable” thing to do, but there aren’t many people who would leave that much money on the table. He’ll keep up the pretense of trying to come back, will never pitch again, and “retire” after the season.
Smoltz IS, WAS and WILL be my favorite Brave. He is a flat out WARRIOR and I will never forget him as long as I’m a fan.

I was at the Hawks game last night – looks like I chose a good game for my first.
More importantly, the Commodores secured a commitment late last night from combo-guard Brad Tinsley, their fourth Top 100 player in what is now a Top 15 class.
On the same night in which Duke Crews and Ramar Smith were dismissed from UT’s team.
I love it.

DOesn’t matter Stu, Ramar wasn’t going to play next year, and we will still be state champs without them. Tyler Smith and Scottie Hopson will dominate.
Smitty, Ramar was going to play a lot next year. Now it’s JP Prince (who can’t play the position) and that West kid (a not-very-highly-regarded freshman) to man the point for UT.
You’ve still got talent, but those are huge losses.
