The way I read that article is that LaRoche will have to earn the job in the spring, and rightfully so, but I don’t know who he is going to compete against if the job isn’t his already.

This should read: “We don’t feel there is any chance he’ll be a great player. If everything breaks his way he might be decent. Think Randall Simon.”
I think they mean that he won’t be a power hitter but a hitter for average instead. You can interpret that in the same way, if you want, but LaRoche should give the team a lot more production than Simon would.
