ESPN.com – MLB – Recap – Braves at Diamondbacks – 05/04/2003

The extra-inning boys were at it again, the Braves scoring the winning run in the eleventh on, of all things, a foul pop-up behind first base by Rafael Furcal. With the bases loaded and one out, Darren Bragg scored on the sac-popout, and Vinny scored from second when the throw was wild. Weird stuff.

Greg Maddux had an attack of the gopher ballitis which had affected him earlier this year, allowing a pair of solo homers in the third, and allowed a pair of unearned runs in the first. Other than that, he pitched okay, except for an uncharacteristic four walks. The bullpen, however, was terrific, five pitchers going an inning apiece. Trey Hodges got the win with a scoreless tenth, and John Smoltz rebounded with the save in the eleventh.

Andruw scored two runs and drove in two with a homer in the sixth. And the Personal Catcher, of all people, had a pair of RBIs, including tying the game in that sixth inning. Every starting position player reached base as the Braves had nine hits and eight walks.

The Braves now lead the division by 1 1/2 over the Phillies and 2 over the Expos; they now have a day off, then host the Rockies for three.
